The thirty-meter-high city wall loomed like a massive stone pressing against Lin Yi's chest, leaving him breathless. He had always considered himself an ordinary person, but at this moment, being called a hero felt like a burden he could not bear. Perhaps deep down, he was just a timid and lazy individual, lacking the spirit of a savior.
With the inexplicable disappearance of the Abomination, the once orderly ranks of A-Type Ordinary Zombies began to scatter. The Zombies, who had been attacking fiercely, suddenly charged toward the convoy like a herd of wild horses, heedless of anything in their path. Members of the Lone Wolf Mercenary Group, trained elite mercenaries, quickly organized themselves to return fire. Without the unpredictable coordination of the Abomination, those seemingly indestructible Zombies became as fragile as porcelain under the onslaught of laser beams, swiftly falling in droves.
"Let's go!" Lone Wolf pointed at the towering thirty-meter wall, his single eye filled with challenge.
Lin Yi merely smiled. After all, he was still young and easily caught up in fervor. He sensed that Lone Wolf's intentions were far from simple; he could even feel that Lone Wolf wanted to eliminate him but had yet to act due to certain reasons.
To conquer without fighting, Lin Yi aimed to demonstrate his strength, making it clear that in light of their vast power disparity, Lone Wolf would have no choice but to bow down.
In an instant, Lin Yi transformed into a shadow and dashed toward the wall. At that moment, he felt even stronger than before after taking the Potential Gene Drug. The thirty-meter wall seemed imposing to others, but for him, it posed no challenge.
The wall was marked with large protrusions and indentations. Lin Yi skillfully utilized these features, moving like the most agile gecko as he scaled the massive structure. He knew that Lone Wolf was only a breath behind him and was closing in with even greater speed.
Unwilling to fall behind, Lin Yi concentrated his strength and kicked a hole into the cement wall with his right foot. With this newfound leverage, he launched himself upward like an over-compressed spring. Just as he was propelled into the air, the section of wall where he had kicked crumbled away, revealing rebar as thick as an infant's arm.
In mid-air, Lin Yi soared above the height of the wall. Just as he was about to fall vertically back down, he twisted his body in an uncanny maneuver and landed directly on top of the wall. The bricks shattered beneath his feet, sending debris cascading down.
His sudden descent startled everyone below; many were readying their weapons to shoot. Fortunately, they quickly realized that the newcomer was human and not another Zombie, averting a misunderstanding.
"Quickly pack up! We need to leave immediately!" Lin Yi steadied himself and shouted to everyone. In the distance, Zombies were gathering incessantly and could completely surround them at any moment. They were now mixed in with the Zombies; calling for artillery support would lead to certain death, and such distant support was limited anyway.
The atmosphere on the wall grew tense. After several battles, they had resigned themselves to death's embrace and vowed to defend their homeland at all costs. However, suddenly having someone drop down wanting to leave meant surrendering their home to those demons. No one was willing to easily abandon their homeland from any perspective.
"Are you not here to help us eliminate those demons?" An elderly man hobbled forward to Lin Yi, visibly agitated.
"Staying means death!" Lone Wolf's cold voice cut through from nearby; he had fallen behind due to Lin Yi's sudden burst of speed.
The crowd's emotions were already complex; Lone Wolf's threat only served to further incite them. It was still that same elderly man who glared at Lone Wolf with wide eyes and shouted angrily, "Although you are here to support us, you have no right to insult us like this!"
The crowd of defenders quickly gathered together, their faces filled with grief and anger. Their homes were trapped, countless friends and family had been injured or killed, and the long-awaited saviors had such a terrible attitude. Vernon's anger towards the Zombie shifted to Lone Wolf, and even Lin Yi faced considerable hostility.
"Hmph, insult? It seems you haven't been surrounded by Zombies enough!" Lone Wolf, confident in his agile movements, was not afraid of the crowd's threats; he believed he could escape from their attacks.
Lin Yi frowned. He really didn't want to get involved, but he had no choice in this matter.
"Everyone, the situation is extremely urgent. Our strength is still insufficient, and we can only take you out for now. There are already fifty thousand Zombies forming a surrounding circle. If we don't hurry up, we will all end up buried in the Zombie Sea."
"What do they call you?" The limping old man asked Lin Yi, his expression shifting several times.
"Hello, sir. My name is Lin Yi, and this is Lone Wolf; he’s the one who brought people here to rescue everyone." Seeing a glimmer of hope in the situation, Lin Yi immediately pushed Lone Wolf into a favorable position. "We are all Mercenaries entrusted by the military and hope everyone can cooperate with our actions."
"Alright, I am the temporary leader here; everyone calls me Old John. You can call me that too!" The old man waved over a middle-aged man and whispered a few words in his ear.
"We will prepare immediately. Is there anything else you need us to do?" Old John adopted a very respectful demeanor, leaving Lone Wolf with no room to refuse.
"Our only request is speed; everyone must gather as quickly as possible!" Lin Yi glanced at the distant commotion in the darkness, his worries growing stronger.
Old John nodded and immediately waved for everyone to descend from the city wall.
At that moment, a blood-soaked boy suddenly emerged from the crowd. He approached Lin Yi with a machete in hand and red eyes, saying, "I want to join you!"
Lin Yi looked at the Big-Headed Boy before him and smiled wryly. "Friend, wait until you grow up to join us!"
"I’m already an adult! I just... just killed a Zombie," the boy's voice grew softer until it was barely audible.
Although Lin Yi didn’t know what had happened, he could tell from the boy's demeanor that he didn’t want to be left out.
"What is your name?" Lin Yi noticed that everyone was starting to retreat and didn't want to delay too long, but he also didn't want to dampen the enthusiasm of the young man in front of him.
"Brice, from the Reck Family!" The Big-Headed Boy puffed out his chest and declared with determination.
Lin Yi had no idea what the Reck Family was about; he was just troubled by how to send this boy away.
"We want to join too!" Before Lin Yi could respond, several young people, not much older than Brice, shouted in unison.
"Hero, you were so cool just now! You killed those demons with a wave of your hand. We want to learn that skill too and avenge the fallen!" A chubby young man in the crowd waved his fists and shouted loudly.
One boy was hard enough to deal with, and now a whole group had come forward. Lin Yi could only feel a headache coming on. At this moment, Lone Wolf had already gone down with the crowd; he was responsible for this operation and couldn't afford any mistakes. If this mission failed because of him, not only would he miss out on shared points, but his Lone Wolf Mercenary Group might not even be necessary anymore.
Lin Yi rubbed his nose, feeling a bit embarrassed. While it felt good to be admired, the responsibility that came with it was daunting.
"Time is running out; the Zombie's encirclement is forming quickly!" Suddenly, a voice called out beside Lin Yi. He turned to see a middle-aged man with a beard, but what stood out most were his ears, which were nearly twice the size of an average person's.
"Big-Eared Uncle, let's join his team!" Brice rushed over to the Big-Eared Man.
Lin Yi looked at the man with the unusually large ears and felt an odd sense of familiarity. However, he quickly dismissed that feeling; ephemeral thoughts were often deceptive.
"I wonder how we will be arranged once we go out with you," the Big-Eared Man pondered, clearly thinking on a different level than those enthusiastic youths.
"That's up to the government, but they should arrange something for us—perhaps production or something like that," Lin Yi replied without overthinking it; his responsibility was simply to save people.
"That won't hinder us from killing these demons, right?" Vernon seemed to prefer calling Zombies demons, which indeed suited their characteristics.
"Of course not! This is a time for everyone to resist!" Lin Yi answered without hesitation.
"Then it's fine if we join you, right?" the Big-Eared Man continued to ask.
"Of course... not!" Lin Yi quickly corrected himself. He didn't want to drag a bunch of friends into his team; they weren't going out for fun, but for a life-and-death struggle.
"I know Mr. Lin Yi thinks we are lacking in skills, but Mr. Bai, Mr. Watson II, and Mr. Firecracker urgently need assistance right now. We can still provide some help," the Big-Eared Man said with a strange smile directed at Lin Yi.
"You! How do you know our Mercenary team's members?" Lin Yi was taken aback for a moment, but the next second, his face was filled with astonishment. His intuition told him that this person was definitely not simple.
"That's just my ability. Of course, this humble skill of mine is still not enough to catch Captain Lin's eye, but I can introduce a few people with greater abilities to Mr. Lin," the Big-Eared Man said, appearing to have Lin Yi completely figured out, speaking slowly and deliberately.
Lin Yi thought for three seconds. After those three seconds, he made up his mind. He didn't know how this decision would affect him in the future, but he knew that expanding his team at this moment would certainly make it stronger.
"I agree to your joining!"
"What about them?" the Big-Eared Man pointed at Brice.
"No problem!" Lin Yi gritted his teeth and replied. Although this meant he would have to take on more responsibility, since fate had chosen him, he no longer wanted to hesitate.
Lin Yi's words acted like a stimulant; the passionate youths cheered collectively at that moment. They wouldn't consider how dangerous the future might be because danger and glory go hand in hand!
