With a sharp sound, the last standing Zombie was swiftly dispatched by Lin Yi's Silver Soul, its head flying off in an instant. In just five short minutes, nearly a thousand Zombies had been slaughtered by the two of them, all accomplished with just a few blades. Both Lin Yi and Lone Wolf were panting heavily; even for them, facing such intense hunting had nearly exhausted all their strength. If the pace of the onslaught increased any further, they would only be left with the grim fate of being devoured.
"Six hundred twelve!" Lin Yi managed to catch his breath and spoke, his voice slightly hoarse.
"You only took advantage of your strong mental power. Your killing speed is comparable to that of two people. But if it comes down to a one-on-one fight, you would definitely lose!" Lone Wolf spat out a mouthful of breath and quickly returned to the vehicle. They were in a desolate area now, where unexpected dangers could easily arise.
Lin Yi spat on the ground and sheathed Silver Soul before heading back to the vehicle as well.
The group naturally did not continue their fierce battle; after all, it was an extremely exhausting endeavor. Their ultimate mission was to rescue the trapped personnel from Vernon. On the way ahead, when they encountered small groups of Zombies, they used their vehicle-mounted weapons to eliminate them. For larger hordes, they relied on overwhelming firepower to break through and escape using the speed advantage of their bulletproof vehicle. However, this was still a path thick with the scent of death, and ultimately they would be surrounded by more and more Zombies.
Vernon was not far from the Greater Paris Defense Zone. Although Bullet Head faced many Zombie obstacles along the way, they still managed to reach the Vernon area within an hour. As they approached Vernon, they saw a dilapidated garden where ragged Zombies roamed, covered in sores and maggots. This place had once been a sanctuary for many, but at this moment, darkness and beauty intertwined there, with shadows of death looming over the once beautiful garden.
"Artillery team, establish outer defenses!" As soon as the convoy arrived in Vernon, Lone Wolf immediately issued orders for the first wave of defense. With their arrival, the scattered Zombies nearby began to converge on them; their rescue would take time, so they needed to eliminate the approaching Zombies first. They ultimately decided to rescue Vernon from encirclement before launching an offensive together. As for whether Lin Yi intended to eliminate the intelligent Zombies first or not, that would depend on the actual situation. After all, dividing forces against an enemy with absolute numerical superiority was a grave tactical mistake.
"The Invincible Mercenary Corps and Round Table Knight Mercenary Corps will handle the scattered Zombies!" For those Zombies that were spread out and approaching, using artillery for interception would be too wasteful.
"The Lone Wolf Mercenary Group and Blood Envoy Squad will follow me to deal with the Zombies surrounding the city walls!"
The commands were instantly relayed as soon as the convoy arrived; everyone began to act according to their assigned roles. Although Lin Yi was displeased that Lone Wolf referred to his mercenary group simply as a squad, he decided not to voice his frustration since this was not the time for such matters.
The Zombies surrounding the city walls quickly noticed the arrival of the convoy. Their first wave of attack had just been repelled by Vernon; now filled with rage upon seeing humans approach, they roared in unison and charged forward.
"Four thousand Zombies! I don't want any accidents!" Lone Wolf grunted coldly and shouted at his mercenaries who had already disembarked.
"Yes, Captain!" The Lone Wolf Mercenary Group shouted back; having experienced missions involving tens of thousands before, they were not intimidated by four thousand Zombies.
"Fire!" All members had disembarked; their task was simply to eliminate these mindless Zombies.
Brilliant laser beams shone brightly in the night sky as hundreds of them fired simultaneously with great force. Those Zombies at the front were instantly incinerated by the searing beams. In just one volley, hundreds of Zombies were reduced to charred remains.
The disparity in strength was overwhelming; these Zombies had almost no chance to retaliate! However, this was just the beginning; these Zombies would not be easy prey. After the initial slaughter ended, a swarm of Zombies retaliated by hurling large iron rods toward the Invincible Mercenary Corps' ranks in anger.
"This is bad! There are Abominations among them!" Lone Wolf never expected that within this horde of less than five thousand Zombies there would be Abominations hiding! According to intelligence analysis, Abominations were like commanders in human society and typically did not appear casually; after all, commanders did not engage in hand-to-hand combat like ordinary soldiers.
"Watch out for ambush!" Silver Soul, behind Lin Yi, swiftly struck out, instantly snapping the flying iron rods in half.
"Thud thud!" A cacophony of metal clashing with flesh erupted within the Lone Wolf Mercenary Group, as several members were impaled by the descending iron rods, pinned to the ground.
"Get back to the vehicle!" Lone Wolf's eyes flashed a blood-red hue. It had been a long time since the Lone Wolf Mercenary Group had suffered such heavy casualties right at the start of a confrontation.
Although many had been killed outright by the iron rods, the Lone Wolf Mercenary Group remained remarkably composed, quickly retreating in an orderly fashion to their vehicles. However, due to the limited space inside, their shooting angles and power were significantly reduced. After deflecting an iron rod attack with his blade, Lin Yi also urged his team members to retreat into the vehicle.
The alloy body of the vehicle was bombarded by the relentless strikes of iron rods, creating a series of loud bangs. Everyone felt as if they were caught in a relentless drumroll, the jarring noise making their heads throb painfully.
Fortunately, this barrage of noise did not last long, and everyone finally had a moment to catch their breath.
"Without unified command from the Abominations, they couldn't possibly exhibit such intelligence. We still need to eliminate them!" The current situation was a race against time for both sides; if they took too long to rescue, they could easily find themselves surrounded by hordes of Zombies. At that point, breaking free would be nearly impossible. The best strategy was to strike quickly and decisively to minimize casualties.
"Are you going to kill it?" Lone Wolf asked Lin Yi, his remaining eye giving off an eerie vibe.
Lin Yi was about to agree but realized that even with his skills, facing the situation outside would be quite challenging. Having experienced numerous battles himself, he wasn't foolish enough to act like a hero: "I'll go with you; let's see who can take down that Abomination first!"
"Fine!" Lone Wolf replied coldly. In this situation, they were all in the same boat; lingering any longer could cost him his life.
Without further hesitation, they instructed their team and jumped out of the vehicle in an instant. With no other factors to consider, both of their speeds surged to their limits. In the blink of an eye, they had dashed into the midst of the Zombie horde. However, for these Zombies, they were completely oblivious.
The cold glint flashed once more among the Zombies, quickly transforming into a mist of blood as those Zombies were shredded into pieces by the rapidly spinning blades. Lin Yi and Lone Wolf moved like an unyielding meat grinder through the crowd of Zombies, carving out a bloody path straight behind them.
Four thousand Zombies were partially restrained by members of the Mercenary Group. Although they couldn't shoot freely for fear of hitting Lin Yi and Lone Wolf, they still managed to hold back a significant portion of the Zombies.
Lin Yi and Lone Wolf cut through the Zombie horde at a terrifying speed and soon found themselves facing a thin black figure coldly staring at them from behind several Giant Zombies.
"We're saved! We haven't been abandoned!" A wave of cheers suddenly erupted from atop a wall as Lin Yi squinted his eyes and saw many people waving their weapons in celebration at their arrival.
Suddenly, that thin figure raised an arm and waved it; five out of six Giant Zombies surrounding it charged directly toward them.
With a few angry roars, five Zombies charged towards Lin Yi and his companions in the blink of an eye, each wielding an Iron Rod.
"Whoosh!" A tremendous gust of wind rushed in, and Lin Yi dared not use his mental power to control the Silver Soul for defense, as it would place a heavy burden on his mind and cause significant harm to himself.
Lin Yi glared, and in an instant, he shot forward like a cannonball.
"Clang!" Sparks flew as Lin Yi struck the Iron Rod swung at him with his blade. In the next moment, the Iron Rod split cleanly in two. The specially forged Silver Soul was incredibly sharp, and combined with Lin Yi's monstrous strength, it easily severed the iron rod.
As the force of the slash diminished, the Silver Soul continued along its original trajectory. With a crisp sound, it sliced into the Zombie's neck. The power of that strike was such that it decapitated both the Iron Rod and the Giant Zombie in one fell swoop.
All of this transpired in just a breath's time; Lin Yi had taken down a Giant Zombie, matching the speed at which he usually dispatched ordinary Zombies.
"Roar!" A thunderous roar erupted to Lin Yi's right, accompanied by a piercing sound wave rushing towards him.
Danger loomed in the next moment. Having just swung his right hand, Lin Yi couldn't retract his blade in time, and his left hand was completely unable to block the lethal threat approaching from the right.
Cold sweat instantly drenched Lin Yi as he realized these Zombies were significantly stronger than the B-Type Zombies he had encountered before. Their reaction speed had improved several levels compared to what he had faced previously. If he hadn't suddenly surged forward just now, he might not have been able to successfully take down a Zombie.
The sound of slicing air approached, and Lin Yi felt a sharp pain beginning to throb in his cheek. In the next instant, he was about to be struck down by the massive Iron Rod!
