Lin Yi suddenly felt as if he were being watched by a fierce beast, the sense of danger overwhelming. The man known as Lone Wolf was undoubtedly at least his equal in strength, and it was entirely possible that he was as formidable as Graham and Anthony, two other powerful individuals.
“Mr. Lone Wolf, let’s discuss the mission first,” the Middle-Aged Officer said humbly to Lone Wolf, not wanting to provoke this powerful figure for any unexpected reason.
Seeing Lin Yi silent, Lone Wolf moved his lips slightly and then followed the Middle-Aged Officer toward a side door in the hall. The officer cautiously trailed behind, but Lin Yi noticed that the officer had a slight limp, making his movements awkward.
At that moment, Kaich had lost his earlier bravado. It wasn’t until Lone Wolf reached the doorway that he remembered he had just been rewarded. Kaich was also holding back his anger and loudly berated a few of his stunned subordinates. It seemed they had only just remembered their leader, rushing over with fearful expressions to help Kaich up.
Now that Kaich had sustained significant injuries, there was no way he could continue to fight Lin Yi. Ying Sa was still insisting on taking Kaich to the hospital; after all, he was her second brother. Seeing Ying Sa accompany him back, Kaich felt a bit intimidated by Lone Wolf and left with a parting threat directed at Lin Yi.
Once their group had departed, Bai approached Lin Yi with a pale face and asked, “Don’t you know who Lone Wolf is?”
Noticing Bai's unusual expression and sensing something strange about the situation, Lin Yi feigned calmness and asked, “Is he famous?”
“He was already a well-known mercenary before the Zombie Crisis, with combat capabilities that are nothing short of terrifying. There was an incident where he single-handedly assassinated a big shot in Latin America, penetrating through an entire battalion of guards as if they were nonexistent. He killed that big shot and nearly decimated the guard camp. That country later placed him on a global wanted list, but every time they tried to capture him, he managed to escape. Even more frightening is that anyone who participated in attempts to kill him ended up dead at his hands. Most of his missions are completed solo and are exceptionally bloody; over time, he earned the title of Lone Wolf,” Bai explained to Lin Yi in detail.
“Even if his individual combat power is impressive, facing thousands of zombies would still be difficult,” Lin Yi said defiantly. While this man’s strength was indeed formidable, he believed he could achieve similar feats.
Bai looked up at the ornate ceiling of the hall before exhaling deeply. “He also commands a thousand-man team, each member possessing terrifying combat abilities—almost all are elite fighters.”
“A thousand!” Lin Yi was genuinely shocked; even some small countries' military forces couldn’t match the strength of just Lone Wolf alone.
“Yes, an elite team of a thousand whose combat power rivals that of an ordinary infantry division,” Bai replied. As a mercenary himself—or perhaps because all his memories were tied to being a mercenary—he envied those who possessed such formidable strength and teams.
Lin Yi's expression revealed his thoughts; he considered his own mercenary group's combat capabilities strong but felt utterly inadequate compared to Lone Wolf.
“However, his Lone Wolf Mercenary Group ranks only third in the Greater Paris Defense Zone!” At some point, the Glasses Judge had approached them.
“And what about the first?” Lin Yi didn’t have time to be shocked; he urgently needed to know how far behind he was compared to the strongest mercenary group.
“I’ve never seen the first mercenary group; I don’t even know its name,” the Glasses Judge said with a hint of regret and reverence on his face.
“How can that be?” Lin Yi asked. No matter how powerful a mercenary group might be, they would surely pale in comparison to an army from a medium-sized country.
“Because currently, the strongest combat force among mercenaries here is indeed the Lone Wolf Mercenary Group; even he can only rank third. The other two groups are actually super-strong divisions within the Greater Paris Defense Zone; they look down on such rankings,” the bespectacled youth continued.
"Do you know what Lone Wolf just went to do with that officer?" Lin Yi pressed.
"This place is not just a platform for assessing strength; there’s also an office inside that handles missions for the top ten Mercenary groups. As I expected, Lone Wolf is here to discuss a large-scale mission, probably looking to secure some 'subsidies' from the military," Glasses Judge said with a strange expression.
"Large-scale?" Lin Yi had faced thousands of Zombies before, and a single misstep could lead to devastating losses. In such situations, his Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps would be lucky just to break free from the encirclement of Zombies, let alone eliminate them.
Bai and Pachy looked equally astonished. Although they had fought many times, they often found themselves fleeing in disarray when faced with overwhelming numbers of Zombies. The thought of systematically exterminating thousands of Zombies was something they couldn't even imagine.
Lin Yi glanced at the two beside him and finally said, "Don't you think we should have a plan to recruit more members and expand our team?"
Bai and Pachy nodded. Due to the terrifying spread of the Zombie Virus, countries around the world focused primarily on defense. While this approach minimized personnel losses, it also reduced their effectiveness against Zombies. Typically, gatherings of Abominations were dealt with by private armed groups like Mercenaries, making it essential for every Mercenary group to strengthen their capabilities. After six months of combat, people had gradually come to understand some peculiar facts: among those Zombies, some could command others in battle, posing a significant potential threat.
"To whom much is given, much is required. Have you considered that the stronger you become, the more dangerous it might be?" Glasses remarked before leaving, perhaps feeling that mingling with strangers was not wise.
At that moment, Lone Wolf burst through the door alone. His previously gloomy face was now filled with rage, resembling a beast ready to pounce.
Then, another figure appeared at the side door—it was the slightly limping Middle-Aged Officer. However, his collar was disheveled now, and his left eye was bruised shut. Still, he hurriedly rushed out.
"Wait, Mr. Lone Wolf, we can discuss your demands further," the officer said almost pleadingly.
"No need; you don't have that authority!" Lone Wolf strode past without acknowledging the officer's plea.
Suddenly, Lone Wolf felt someone blocking his path.
He looked up to see the young man who had just called his name standing in his way.
"Step aside!" The tone of Lone Wolf was devoid of any emotion; for someone like him, feelings had become a burden.
Lin Yi didn't know why he felt compelled to stop Lone Wolf, but he did so instinctively. He wasn't one to champion causes nor was he a genuinely good person. Yet he stepped forward—not for himself after being targeted by Lone Wolf’s men earlier that morning—but because he felt he should help the Middle-Aged Officer.
"Mr. Lone Wolf, I will do my best to advocate for you," he said as the officer finally caught up, perhaps exhausted from running; he instinctively placed a hand on Lone Wolf's shoulder.
Suddenly, a deep loathing flashed in Lone Wolf's eyes, and a fierce expression crossed his face.
"Bang!" The hand that had just rested on Lone Wolf's shoulder was suddenly flung away by Lone Wolf's swift arm movement, sending the Middle-Aged Officer flying. Lin Yi didn't even have time to intervene.
"Over fifty thousand Zombies, and you expect us to go in unarmed and slaughter them? Are you trying to hand us over to the Zombies?" Lone Wolf's emotions were running high, his dark complexion flushed with anger.
The Middle-Aged Officer was somewhat at a loss but managed to steady himself against the wall. Finally, with a resolute look in his eyes, he said, "I can negotiate for half of the supplies for you, but I can't promise more than that."
"Hmph, do you think I'm a fool? Even half of that amount, you probably can't acquire through normal means. I don't want to be dragged down by you!" Lone Wolf scoffed, his face filled with derision.
"Since you know others can't do it, why are you trying to force them?" Lin Yi questioned. He was someone who had struggled on the brink of life and death multiple times and could see that this officer desperately needed Lone Wolf to eliminate those fifty thousand Zombies.
"Kid, I see you're also a Mercenary. Don't you know that Mercenaries hate being treated like fools?" Lone Wolf was confident in his abilities, but he sensed that this young man before him was far from harmless.
"I'm not trying to fool you, but this is all the military is willing to offer. I’m powerless beyond that," the Middle-Aged Officer said as he wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and took a few steps forward.
"The military wouldn't waste so many resources for a city of just a few thousand people. I'm not an idiot; I'm not going to risk my life for such little support!" Lone Wolf retorted.
Lin Yi began to understand the situation: over fifty thousand Zombies were surrounding a city, but due to the enormous cost involved, the military was unwilling to allocate sufficient resources to rescue those people. At that moment, Lin Yi felt a chilling realization—human lives often held less value than inanimate objects. He believed life was priceless, but not everyone shared that view.
"We can join forces to eliminate those Zombies; at the very least, we can rescue the people!" Lin Yi looked at the Middle-Aged Officer, his expression serious as he spoke.
