No one spoke; everyone simply watched Lin Yi in silence, though each person's expression was different. Will felt somewhat uncomfortable under their gazes, yet he refrained from saying anything further.
"Why?" Ying Sa coldly asked Will, her team members having been killed by Benito and his group. She was the first to refuse to let this matter be swept under the rug.
"It's the higher-ups' orders; I'm just here to execute them!" Will replied, licking his cracked lips.
"Hmph, what a convenient excuse from the higher-ups. Why have we worked so hard if you can just disregard our sacrifices with a single statement?" Lin Yi broke free from Taishan's support and surveyed the surroundings.
"If you still want to fight, I'm ready," Anthony casually remarked, cracking his neck.
"You..." Lin Yi began to speak but suddenly rolled his eyes back and collapsed onto the ground. At that moment, a figure stood beside Lin Yi, rubbing his palm as if the previous strike had caused him some pain.
Fire Dragon glared at Graham with wide eyes, pointing a finger at him and shouting, "Bastard!..."
"He just fainted; you all should go back!" Graham blurred for a moment before reappearing next to Anthony.
"You've gone too far!" Number 19 couldn't hold back against their arrogance, despite having endured it many times before.
Taishan and the others were on high alert, ready to act at the slightest movement from the other side.
"Many people have already died; what more do you want?" Will shouted. He knew that today’s situation made his side look weak, but there was nothing he could do; he understood how powerful these two individuals were.
Suddenly, Douglas felt a momentary daze wash over him, akin to the thick fog in a forest during early morning, obscuring everything around him. However, this strange sensation lasted only an instant before he quickly regained his composure. But in the next moment, he realized that Benito, whom he had been controlling, had vanished. Not just Benito—Carlo, Anthony, and Graham had all disappeared as well.
Everything seemed bizarre yet was expected; aside from those two formidable individuals who had just taken Benito and Carlo away without anyone noticing, there was no one else capable of such a feat. Thinking back to how he had wanted to confront them earlier made Douglas feel a chill run down his spine. Although their methods were strange, at least they hadn’t aimed for his life. As someone skilled in mental power, Douglas now realized that his brief moment of confusion must have been due to some technique employed by them. Because of this realization, Douglas also understood their strength; it wouldn't be difficult for them to eliminate people like him.
"Reminder to Captain Lin to report to the headquarters early!" A distant voice drifted from the seaside, faint yet recognizable; it was Graham.
Will waved his hand toward the helicopter, signaling everyone to disembark. It was astonishing that they had spent so long in the Zombie-infested area without encountering any attacks. However, if they could avoid a confrontation with those Zombies, no one would seek trouble.
...
As late spring temperatures began to rise, Lin Yi awoke from a nightmare, feeling sticky all over, which made it hard for him to calm down. It took him nearly a minute to pull himself out of the surreal world, but the surroundings felt unfamiliar, looking much cleaner than where he had stayed before.
"Boss, you're awake?" With a creak, the door swung open, and a curvaceous figure entered, swaying her hips. The sunlight outside was quite bright, but Lin Yi squinted as he watched her approach step by step.
"How did I fall asleep again?" Lin Yi's mind was muddled; he sensed something had happened but couldn't recall any details.
Ika paused for a moment before smiling and saying, "Let's eat something first. It's rare rice porridge—remember how much you liked it before?" She placed a steaming bowl of porridge on the table beside Lin Yi. The food was simple, but its fragrant aroma made one's mouth water.
Lin Yi nodded in appreciation and then got up to slowly eat the porridge he hadn't had in days—or perhaps even years.
"Where are we now?" Lin Yi suddenly set down his bowl and stared at Ika.
"This is where Colonel Will arranged for us to stay; it's a sanatorium," Ika replied softly after a brief pause.
Leaning against the wall, Lin Yi spoke wearily, "So they all ran away, right?"
"No, boss, at that time..." Ika tried to explain something but stopped when she saw Lin Yi smile at her and wave his hand dismissively. She could tell that Lin Yi was genuinely smiling, not just putting on an act.
"Everyone was too impulsive yesterday; we need to be more cautious in the future." Lin Yi patted Ika on the shoulder and walked away nonchalantly.
In that fleeting moment as he left the doorway, Ika caught sight of Lin Yi's tightly clenched fist. She knew that the seed of hatred had already been sown; it was just that Lin Yi kept it buried deep within, waiting for the right moment. The blow from yesterday had also been a painful growth experience for Lin Yi. At least now, it seemed he would not act as impulsively and immaturely as before.
The Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps resided in a street-facing building, somewhat resembling a roadside inn, surrounded by typical French-style buildings that gave one a faint sense of returning to the Napoleonic era. Lin Yi was on the third-floor balcony, eyes closed as he basked in the sunlight. Since his awakening, he had been in constant battle; at this moment, his mind gradually settled, making it one of his most peaceful times.
Last night had been filled with toil, and most people were still resting. The Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps was born amidst the waves of Zombies, which kept the entire mercenary group perpetually busy. However, not everyone was oblivious to the seriousness of the situation; at that moment, Tony appeared at the stairway, looking exhausted.
Seeing Tony's bloodshot eyes and disheveled skin, Lin Yi spoke up, "Did you search all night?"
Tony nodded and then slumped down onto the floor without saying a word. Lin Yi understood his feelings well; there was a time when he too had looked just as lifeless.
"Brother, don't worry. Your wife and the others are fine. Think about our mercenary group; with so many capable people around, we can definitely help you find someone!"
Tony remained silent, but two tears streamed down his dark cheeks, and a sense of sorrow quickly enveloped the room. Lin Yi sighed softly and turned to head downstairs. He knew that when a man felt like crying, it was better to let him be alone for a while.
The first floor was a large hall with some sofas scattered about haphazardly. Two potted plants at the entrance added a touch of life to the room under the sunlight. At that moment, Pachy and Bai Zheng sat on separate sofas smoking; both looked weary and likely hadn't slept all night.
Upon seeing Lin Yi arrive, Pachy quickly stood up. His tall frame blocked out quite a bit of light, darkening the entire hall slightly.
"Lin Yi, Mr. Li sent over a video yesterday for you!" Pachy said as he handed Lin Yi a communicator.
After triggering the button, a holographic image appeared on the communicator's screen—it was Lin Yi's future father-in-law, Li Xianzong.
"Lin, you don't need to worry about Wenwen. I've already found her; she's in a special place right now and it's not convenient for her to meet with you. I heard you've formed a Mercenary group, so focus on that. Once you're together with Wenwen, you'll be able to protect her well. I don't want a repeat of what happened last time. Lastly, just so you know, your parents are doing fine. Make sure to keep in touch with them when you can."
The video was short, lasting less than thirty seconds, but Lin Yi was certain that Li Qiweng was indeed safe. However, he couldn't understand why it was still inconvenient for her to meet him now that she had been found. Her disappearance had been strange from the start, as if everything had been arranged in advance, and it all felt eerie.
"What else did you discuss during your contact?" Lin Yi felt something was off; he needed more information to understand the situation.
"Mr. Li was supposed to contact you directly yesterday, but you were unconscious at the time, so he just recorded a message and hung up," Pachy recalled the details from yesterday with effort. "But when I spoke with Mr. Li, it seemed like..."
"Seemed like what?" Seeing Pachy hesitate, Lin Yi pressed for more.
"I think I heard Li Qiweng's voice next to him!" Pachy still looked uncertain.
"What? Is Li Qiweng with her father?" Lin Yi's eyes widened in disbelief.
Pachy frowned and continued, "It’s possible I misheard; it all happened so quickly."
Various unsettling thoughts flooded Lin Yi's mind. Ever since he woke up, he had been worried about Li Qiweng's situation. Now that he finally had some clues, everything felt suspicious. If what Pachy suggested was true and Li Qiweng was indeed by Li Xianzong's side, then why was this future father-in-law being so secretive? Even if he didn't want them to meet, with Li Xianzong's power, what would be the problem in being straightforward? The more Lin Yi thought about it, the more anxious he became; he even started to suspect that the holographic image he just saw might have been Li Qiweng's father, Li Xianzong!
"No! I need to go back to Lion City immediately!" Lin Yi couldn't bear to think any further; his heart felt like it couldn't handle his wild speculations! The only solution now was to return to Lion City and verify everything for himself.
