The death of a member of the Round Table Knights cast a shadow over the previously confident hearts of the group. After surviving numerous waves of zombies, they had not expected to fall into a trap set by humans.
Ying Sa was not in a good mood at that moment. She was determined to go after those people herself. Lin Yi could not allow Ying Sa to go alone; having already lost one of her team members, he would feel guilty for a lifetime if anything happened to her again.
"Let go!" Ying Sa said coldly, not even glancing back at Lin Yi, who had his hand on her shoulder.
Lin Yi felt a flush of heat on his face. He hadn’t anticipated that Ying Sa would be so dismissive of him, but he held on and spoke softly, "The situation below is unclear. For safety's sake, we should check if there are any other dangers in this secret passage first!"
Before Ying Sa could respond, Lin Yi gestured to Woods, who was standing nearby. Having worked together for some time, Woods understood Lin Yi's intent immediately. He closed his eyes briefly and took on a devout expression. Then an unusual scene unfolded: a gray shadow swiftly emerged beneath Woods' feet and gradually stood upright on its own. The members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps were already accustomed to such sights, but the Round Table Knights were taken aback, their mouths twitching in astonishment. Although they had collaborated several times to eliminate zombies, they had never witnessed Woods display this particular ability.
Woods' Shadow Brothers quickly faded away until they completely vanished before everyone’s eyes. The once assertive Ying Sa fell silent at this sight and allowed Lin Yi to pull her away from the entrance of the secret passage.
A few minutes later, Woods spoke up. "I've confirmed that the cement building inside the passage has collapsed, and digging through will take considerable time. Additionally, there is a triggering mechanism near the collapse site, likely related to that explosion we just heard."
Everyone exchanged glances, momentarily speechless. Logically speaking, they should abandon the pursuit; however, Ying Sa could not let it end like this after losing one of her team members.
Just as everyone hesitated, Pachy suddenly approached Lin Yi and whispered something to him. Lin Yi then looked at Ying Sa with an odd expression. It was his first time working with her, and he didn’t know much about her situation. However, it seemed that Ying Sa's abilities were not simple; otherwise, such events wouldn’t have occurred.
"Um, Captain Ying Sa, someone outside is looking for you!" Lin Yi called out softly.
"Colonel Will from the Paris Western Defense Zone Special Operations Team!" A cheerful voice rang out from outside the door. Before anyone could react, seven or eight fully armed soldiers surged in.
At that moment, a young officer in his thirties with neatly combed golden hair and striking features strode in with an imposing presence. However, his gaze had been fixed on Ying Sa since he entered, completely ignoring Lin Yi and the others.
"It’s great to see you again, Sister Ying!" Will attempted to take Ying Sa's delicate hand for a kiss on the hand gesture but was met with surprise as she stepped back to stand beside Lin Yi, her eyes coldly regarding the charming colonel who could captivate countless young women.
“Colonel Will, what brings you here?” Ying Sa's voice was cold, as if she had just recalled something unpleasant. Despite the young colonel's impressive qualifications, she always felt he carried an air of frivolity that made him unfit for serious responsibilities.
“We received intelligence that Sister Ying was in danger at Reiz Hotel, so I rushed over. But it seems Sister Ying has truly made us proud; you must have already dealt with the threat!” Colonel Will gazed at Ying Sa with admiration, and anyone could see his feelings were evident.
“Yes, so you can go back now!” Ying Sa, still reeling from the loss of a team member, was not in the mood to entertain the colonel.
“Colonel, most of the threats here have been neutralized. I'll brief you on the specifics shortly. However, some of them have escaped through a secret passage, and we need to capture them quickly. These individuals are likely feeding Zombies; we cannot let them get away!” Pachy had dealt with General Will a few times before and was surprised to see him here for support tonight.
Upon hearing Pachy's words, Will immediately wiped the frivolous expression off his face and said, “Mr. Pachy, then let's act swiftly!” He had received reports that assistance was needed at Reiz Hotel but was unaware of the full situation.
The presence of Zombies in the Paris Defense Zone was a serious incident. Will dared not make any unilateral decisions and promptly began contacting his superiors to request a citywide search. Lin Yi and Ying Sa's Mercenary team, being the first to discover this situation, were naturally entrusted with significant responsibilities. Historically, when facing Zombies, national Armed Forces would actively collaborate with private Armed Forces to achieve optimal extermination results.
Though Will felt reluctant to leave, the urgency of the situation demanded his attention. The two Mercenary teams were assigned to track one group toward the suburbs while Will's unit focused on the urban area.
Time was of the essence; after distributing tasks, everyone acted rapidly. Will had brought a squadron of Armed Helicopters and quickly boarded one after exiting. Meanwhile, other members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps arrived in Ying Sa's Bullet Head transport vehicle, known as a super combat vehicle due to its incredible speed.
“Isn’t it too aimless for us to track without any leads?” Lin Yi questioned once Will departed.
“Boss, I have a plan!” Jerry, who had been silent all night, finally spoke up.
“Oh? What’s your plan?” Lin Yi felt a surge of hope; he worried that they might lose track of those desperate individuals and that the entire Paris region could fall into chaos. Having witnessed city after city turn into Zombie havens, he could not bear to see such a fate befall again.
“Our tribe has the ability to communicate with animals, as you all know. If one of our children goes missing, we use this special ability to summon nearby animals to help find them; we’ve never failed!” Jerry explained briefly.
Lin Yi nodded after hearing this: “Good, then act quickly!”
Jerry nodded lightly and walked alone to the edge of a thicket. Soon, everyone heard a series of obscure chants emanating from Jerry's mouth, the sound long and ancient, as if it came from a time when humanity was just beginning to awaken its intelligence and communicate with other beings.
Incredibly, a scene unfolded before them as animals that were rarely seen began to appear one after another. They approached like worshippers coming to pay their respects, kneeling solemnly before Jerry.
Gray rabbits, plump mice, bushy-tailed squirrels, and even vividly patterned snakes gathered around. They bowed their heads and lifted them in turn, and as Jerry chanted, anthropomorphic expressions appeared on their faces. Strange sounds emerged from their mouths, and one Mole was frantically waving its arms in a particular direction, looking anxious.
After about five minutes, Jerry's communication with these creatures seemed to conclude. He suddenly raised his voice, and the orderly array of animals scattered in an instant.
"According to the Mole, those people actually split into two directions when they fled. One group ran towards the city area, while the other headed deeper into the suburbs. The path towards the suburbs is one that the weasel has traveled several times; it stretches nearly twenty kilometers. At the end of the tunnel, there is an ordinary red house," Jerry reported without acknowledging the astonishment of those around him.
Lin Yi was still deeply impressed by Jerry's extraordinary ability and quickly regained his composure from the shock. The group then split into two vehicles and raced towards the weasel's direction. On the way, Lin Yi learned that while he had been trapped earlier, Woods had also been subdued outside by two men in black with knives. Fortunately, Woods managed to control his shadow to ambush the two attackers from behind. When he saw that Lin Yi hadn’t come out, he notified the other members of the Mercenary Corps for assistance. At that moment, Ying Sa’s team happened to be looking for Pachy and others to collaborate on hunting a batch of Zombies outside the defense zone. Seeing that members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps were taking action, Ying Sa joined in and even contributed two of his Bullet Head transport vehicles.
It was now deep into the night, and naturally, there were no vehicles or crowds in the suburbs. Under full intelligent computer control, the Bullet Head advanced at a terrifying speed towards the weasel’s location. Before they could exchange a few words, the vehicle came to a halt, and indeed within the range illuminated by the headlights stood a red house.
The sudden appearance of a red house amidst dense trees was eerie and terrifying. At that moment, the door of the red house swung open abruptly, and seven or eight ordinary-looking men rushed out from inside. However, judging by their expressions, they seemed completely unfazed.
Lin Yi and his companions knew that Mole's information was accurate and immediately got out of the vehicle to surround them. Yet at that moment Lin Yi felt an uneasy sensation; it was clear that these individuals were not fish on a chopping board for him to slaughter at will. Strangely enough, those men simply watched as Lin Yi and his group surrounded them without any reaction.
Suddenly, Lin Yi felt a sharp sting on his skin as if winter's cold wind had brushed against his cheek. By the time he reacted, seven short blades had materialized before him, less than an inch away.
