The flickering firelight cast shadows on Lin Yi's already resolute face, and for a moment, his thoughts drifted back to a distant place, a time of quiet living and a nostalgic childhood. However, this feeling did not last long, as the people inside the building began to retaliate.
Weapons from both sides quickly intertwined, but it was clear that the opposing group resembled more of a rabble compared to Lin Yi's Mercenary team. As soon as the enemy started their counterattack, the Mercenaries swiftly found cover to continue firing, while the firepower from within was suppressed from the very beginning.
Lin Yi maneuvered through the battlefield where bullets whizzed past, searching for every living force of the enemy that he could eliminate. Although he had just wiped out all the Giant Zombies, he knew there were more to deal with.
“Lin Yi, making such a commotion is not good!” Pachy, who had once served as an armed personnel for the state, was naturally more strict about rules. He couldn't understand why Lin Yi would want to level someone else's building without saying a word.
Lin Yi glanced back at Pachy and said, “It's not good for us to cause trouble alone. You need to contact the Paris Military District's Armed Forces; we cannot let a single person escape!”
“What exactly is happening?” Pachy asked, confused.
“They are breeding Zombies to serve them; shouldn't you wipe them all out?” Although Lin Yi was not a good person, he wasn't truly a murderer either. However, what the enemy was doing this time was too insane—it was like gambling with the survival of humanity itself, completely shattering Lin Yi's lowest bottom line.
Pachy was taken aback; how could anyone feed Zombies while the world fought against them? What kind of selfish person would commit such a heinous act? After a brief moment of shock, Pachy quickly returned to the vehicle to make contact. As a capable Mercenary team, they still had connections with the military.
After the first wave of gunfire subsided, a second wave of rockets soon exploded around the building like the trident of death with roaring tails of flame. After these two rounds of fire, only two floors remained standing from the five-story building. Everyone felt it was strange because under normal circumstances, those last two floors should not have been able to remain intact.
The truth soon emerged; illuminated by the dazzling firelight, they finally saw that the building before them was constructed from massive welded steel plates. Although Lin Yi's firepower was formidable, these steel plates were too thick for them to deal with in a short time. The hole created by the Mercenaries to save Lin Yi had already been quickly sealed off by the enemy and would be difficult to breach again.
Lin Yi furrowed his brow; he was eager to eliminate all these people, but now that they were hiding in an impregnable fortress made of steel, it would take time to break through. What they needed now was speed; if they delayed too long, no one knew what might happen.
“Douglas, Jerry, you two take two people and secure the left side. Taishan and Huolong will handle anyone trying to escape from behind. Old Bai and your veteran Mercenaries will guard the right side—remember not to let anyone escape! The rest follow me for a frontal attack!” Lin Yi surveyed everyone and immediately assigned tasks. He had intended for Reagan to conduct aerial surveillance for broader observation, but for some unknown reason, Reagan did not come over.
The opposing side had their gates tightly shut, appearing to be in a state of complete defense. However, everyone present was clever enough to know that such an important stronghold surely had underground passages. The only issue was their lack of manpower; breaking through this steel fortress was their best option.
"Captain Lin, it seems you've forgotten about our existence," the owner of the voice that had just made Lin Yi's heart race approached him.
Having already heard her voice before, there was no risk of another blunder. It was only when she drew closer that he realized she was merely a girl in her twenties, with a Eurasian mixed face that bore a hint of determination. Yet, the bright eyes that sparkled on her round face gave off an impression of someone who simply needed affection. Coincidentally, she had her hair tied up in a high ponytail just like Li Qiweng. The snug black combat suit she wore accentuated her delicate figure, and the slight reveal of her chest seemed to playfully escape due to the ill-fitting attire. This subtle exposure conveyed a sense of warmth and allure, youthful yet not overly reserved.
"Sorry, the situation is quite special right now. May I ask who you are?" Lin Yi realized he didn't even know her name despite her coming to assist them.
The girl Lin Yi referred to clearly felt a bit displeased; he could see her nostrils flare slightly as her cherry-red lips pouted. "I helped your team earn quite a few Contribution Points, and you still don't know my name? I'm Captain Ying Sa of the Round Table Knight Mercenary Corps!"
Lin Yi hadn't expected this girl, who had just appeared serious, to suddenly switch to such an adorable demeanor. He couldn't help but smile.
"What's wrong? You seem quite unconvinced," Ying Sa raised an eyebrow, her eyes wide and hands on her hips, looking ready to explode with anger.
Lin Yi scratched the back of his head, feeling somewhat embarrassed. "No, Miss Ying, I just didn't expect you to be a Mercenary Squad leader already!"
"Really? I learned to shoot at ten years old and took on missions alone in the Underworld at sixteen. Now I have three years of combat experience under my belt, and I've completed every mission successfully!" Ying Sa seemed eager to prove herself, quickly listing off her achievements.
Suddenly, Lin Yi's expression changed as he grabbed Ying Sa and pulled her down to the ground. The action was so sudden that she didn't have time to resist before he wrapped his arms around her waist and they both fell to the ground in less than a second. At that moment, a loud bang echoed in their ears. A tree trunk, thick as an adult's thigh, now sported a five-centimeter diameter hole with wisps of smoke rising from it.
"That was a stray bullet!" Lin Yi realized that his chest was pressed tightly against Ying Sa's firm figure, and just moments ago his mouth had nearly brushed against her cheek.
Ying Sa surprisingly did not react like other girls would—glaring or tearing up. Instead, she stared intently at Lin Yi's face with wide eyes, silent. Lin Yi felt a chill run down his spine under her gaze, sensing an eerie stillness akin to the calm before a storm. Remembering his earlier actions made him blush deeply; he dared not say much more. But in an instant, Ying Sa pushed him away forcefully with both hands, signaling for him to get up.
Lin Yi finally reacted, standing up somewhat awkwardly. Ying Sa, after getting up, silently walked away towards her Round Table Knight Mercenary Corps members.
Wu Hao, who had not officially participated in the combat mission, suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He walked over to Lin Yi, placing a hand on his shoulder while his eyes followed Ying Sa's retreating figure. "This girl is someone we met during a mission. She really provided us with a lot of support. However, she has always kept her true identity a secret. The strangest thing is that while others undertake missions to earn Contribution Points to secure their survival in this chaotic world, she seems indifferent to the Contribution Points she gains from hunting Zombies. Especially after learning about your situation, she almost gave you all her extra Contribution Points. I've tried several times to see through her thoughts, but she has always maintained her emotions very well. She seems genuinely innocent and has no ulterior motives. All I know is that she comes from a very powerful faction, but I can't gather any more specific information."
Hearing Wu Hao's lengthy explanation, Lin Yi suddenly felt a strange sensation rising within him. At that moment, he felt like a child lost in layers of fog, trying to squint and see what lay ahead. No matter how hard he tried, he still couldn't make out what was in front of him.
"From your expression, it looks like you're interested in someone else's girl!" Wu Hao remarked with a half-smile at Lin Yi.
Lin Yi chuckled lightly and said nothing more; he simply signaled a few people to take their Laser Guns and began firing at the Iron Gate. Ying Sa's Rocket Launcher barrage clearly couldn't do much against the Steel Fortress for now, but the Laser Guns in their hands could concentrate their fire on one point. No matter how thick the steel plates were, with their persistent efforts, they would eventually break through.
Things developed as Lin Yi had anticipated; within just a few seconds of concentrated fire from ten Laser Guns, a hole with a diameter of fifty centimeters appeared in the iron gate. Lin Yi then called over Ying Sa and instructed her team to fire a few rockets through the opening to clear the area.
Once the dust settled, everyone rushed inside under Lin Yi's lead. It was pitch black inside, but even with his eyes closed, Lin Yi could clearly sense the atmosphere around them. However, it seemed that apart from their own group, there was no one else present. They tossed a few Cold Flame Fires into the room, instantly illuminating it. The remnants of Zombies that Lin Yi had slain were scattered everywhere—limbs and body parts littered across the floor. After enduring another round of artillery fire, the entire place was filled with a nauseating stench; unknown bits of flesh and entrails were strewn throughout the space.
"Prepare suction cups; we’re climbing up!" Ying Sa commanded decisively, pointing at the four shooting holes in the room while the Cold Flame Fire still burned brightly.
