It was as if the world, in its primordial chaos, had finally glimpsed a sliver of light. As time flowed on, that light grew brighter, poised to pierce through the darkness enveloping everything. The long-dormant Consciousness began to awaken alongside this expanding brightness, yet it felt an invisible force pressing down upon it, rendering it immobile despite its desperate struggles. Fortunately, the Consciousness was stirring from its slumber; it attempted to break free from the Cage surrounding it. However, it soon realized that the light would almost come to a halt once it reached a certain intensity.
A wave of panic washed over the Consciousness. It feared being trapped in this half-open chaos forever, unable to truly awaken. Thus, it began to thrash about, striving to run toward the luminous exit. Yet, after what felt like an eternity of running—its legs heavy as if filled with lead—the distance to that exit remained unchanged. The Consciousness grew weary and contemplated closing its eyes, wishing to escape the burden of complex thoughts forever.
Suddenly, shouts echoed from above in the seemingly boundless darkness, jolting the drowsy Consciousness back to alertness. What was that sound? It felt oddly familiar. The Consciousness murmured to itself, sensing an inexplicable warmth in those distant cries.
"I want to get out; I don’t want to stay here." The Consciousness suddenly resolved to step out of the darkness. In that moment, no obstacle could deter it.
Gradually awakening, the Consciousness resumed its relentless journey of running. Time passed slowly, yet that bright exit still seemed far beyond reach. A sense of sadness enveloped the Consciousness; it could not comprehend where this feeling originated. The voices above continued their incessant calls, but now they troubled the Consciousness. It sensed something was missing from those voices, and this absence intensified its feelings of loss.
"What would happen if I stopped running?" the Consciousness repeatedly questioned itself. Just as it prepared to halt, it caught sight of a figure racing ahead—a stunning silhouette. The Consciousness didn’t know what "stunning" meant, but upon seeing that figure, it felt an overwhelming urge to chase after it. With renewed vigor, the Consciousness quickened its pace and felt stronger than before.
After what seemed like an eternity of running, the Consciousness sensed it was drawing closer to that figure. It could even see a ponytail bouncing joyfully with each stride of that silhouette. Elated at finally getting a clearer view, the Consciousness sprinted faster. At that moment, the figure seemed to notice the Consciousness and turned around.
The sight of that turning figure sent waves of anxiety through the Consciousness; its heart raced as if ready to leap from its chest. Yet when the figure turned back, all it could see were eyes as clear and flawless as black jewels. That alone was enough for the Consciousness to feel content; it believed it could never part from this figure.
Unbeknownst to itself, the Consciousness had already reached right behind that figure and stretched out its hand to grasp its delicate hand. But in an instant, a powerful suction emerged from within this chaotic realm, pulling away the figure like a snowflake falling from the sky. In that moment, the Consciousness felt as though its heart had been hollowed out—an unbearable ache surged within.
Frantically, the Consciousness yearned to grasp that figure but could only watch helplessly as it was drawn farther away until it vanished completely from sight.
"Wen~" A heart-wrenching cry echoed through the brightly lit hospital room.
"Captain!"
"Boss!"
"Chief!"
"Brother Lin!"
After a moment of daze, the people in the hospital room quickly regained their senses and rushed to the bedside, eager to talk to the already awakened Lin Yi. The doctors who had been treating Lin Yi were pushed into a corner by these "reckless" mercenaries, but they merely shook their heads with strange expressions, not intervening.
Lin Yi looked around in confusion, seeing familiar faces filled with concern for him, and a warm feeling surged in his heart. The local military was responsible for covering the evacuation of civilians, but due to the widespread dispersal of people and the limited evacuation vehicles available, the situation was quite chaotic. The only large hospital at that time had stopped accepting patients because all the doctors had fled.
Stranded in a foreign land with no one to turn to, the only flying minibus was commandeered by the local military upon landing. Fortunately, after Taishan and Huolong showcased their special skills, they reluctantly returned the flying car to the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps. However, when they flew towards the European continent, they were blocked outside. Luckily, Ika leveraged her connections through her father to reach Mr. Li and then contacted the French President. Due to all these delays, Lin Yi's condition worsened; by the time they reached the Paris Military District Hospital, he had completely lost vital signs. Miraculously, he gradually regained some signs of life but remained in a deep coma without consciousness. After exhausting their hard-earned fifty thousand Contribution Points and receiving additional help from Lion City, members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps continuously assisted in hunting zombies locally to earn rewards. Coupled with reduced hospital fees, this ultimately pulled Lin Yi back from the brink of death.
As for the situation outside, ever since the signing of the Stratospheric Agreement, various regions began large-scale unified defense operations. According to the provisions of the Agreement, various civilian armed organizations sprang up like mushrooms after rain, launching extermination campaigns against Zombies. However, these mixed and chaotic Armed Forces gradually became less straightforward after receiving government support, leading to ongoing disputes. When Lin Yi learned that he had been in a coma for three months, he instinctively rubbed the back of his head. Awakening from his dream was a stark reality; he hesitated to imagine the situation outside but knew he had to face it.
At that moment, the doctor had completed Lin Yi's final examination. An older physician approached, pulling down his mask to address everyone. "This is Mr. Lin's miracle, as well as a miracle in medical history."
"Old man, stop with the nonsense and just tell us if our Captain has any issues!" Tony said impatiently, showing no courtesy toward the Attending Physician.
The Attending Physician felt a bit irritated but managed to suppress his dissatisfaction after years of practice.
"Mr. Lin's body has completely recovered, and we just found that his body has become even more..." The Attending Physician seemed at a loss for words, his face displaying an odd expression.
"What do you mean?" Tony pressed on.
The old doctor appeared eager to find an adjective but struggled to articulate it. Under the anxious gazes of everyone present, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, he finally said, "Preliminary checks show that his bone density and muscle density far exceed that of an average person; this is not something a human should possess!"
"Not human?" Everyone gasped in unison at the Attending Physician's revelation.
