From high above, looking down at the ground always evokes a sense of grandeur, as if the entire world trembles beneath one's feet. The members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps now share this feeling as they witness the Spear of God raining down into the Horde, flames erupting in bursts that obliterate the surrounding Zombies into mere scraps of flesh. The exhilaration is akin to drinking a glass of ice water in the sweltering heat of summer—refreshing beyond measure.
However, gazing at the dense mass of Zombies below sends shivers down their spines. They had been tirelessly fighting and were unaware of just how many Zombies there were. Now, from their vantage point, they could see not only the sheer number of Zombies but also the hordes of Corpseification beasts. Even if Lin Yi could single-handedly slay a thousand Zombies in one go, it would take him several nights to clear them all.
Although Lin Yi and his companions wanted to observe the battle a little longer, the helicopters sent to retrieve them had no combat mission; they were simply there to pick them up. The two helicopters flew over the Horde and headed straight for the city. At that moment, Jimmy's condition was far from optimistic; due to a lack of timely medical treatment, he had fallen into a complete coma. With nothing available in the helicopter, Pachy had no choice but to administer an excessive dose of adrenaline to Jimmy, hoping he could hold on.
This time, the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps did not receive a hero's welcome. After landing on the city wall's helipad, only two doctors arrived to assist Lin Yi and his team in transporting Jimmy directly to the hospital. However, much to their surprise, Kachi had sent them 0000 Contribution Points, acknowledging their achievement in slaying three hundred Zombies. Lin Yi was unsure what this meant but decided to accept it regardless of its implications.
After everyone left the hospital, Witerson II and Akin stayed behind to keep Jimmy company. Having fought alongside him through thick and thin, they couldn't bear to leave him alone in the hospital. Lin Yi initially wanted to stay and monitor Jimmy's condition as well, but several doctors treated them with cold indifference. He nearly got into an argument with them until Pachy and others managed to pull him back before things escalated. Although Lin Yi considered himself generally mild-mannered, he felt increasingly unable to control his emotions and was becoming quite irritable.
"Lin Yi, let's head back; something feels off!" Pachy urged as he pulled Lin Yi away from the hospital and found a car for their return.
At the entrance of their temporary residence, Li Qiweng, Jiao Jiao, Jones, and others had been waiting anxiously. Their faces were etched with tension until Lin Yi and his group stepped out of the car; only then did smiles break across their faces as they approached.
"What's wrong? Did you think I wouldn't come back?" Lin Yi said casually as he took Li Qiweng's hand and walked inside first.
Li Qiweng felt her face flush crimson under the strange gazes of those around her. Tony was never one to miss an opportunity for mischief; upon seeing this scene, he began clapping and shouting excitedly. His antics lightened the previously tense atmosphere considerably.
After returning from battle, it was natural for Lin Yi to address everyone. He briefly explained their situation and answered questions about Jimmy's whereabouts.
Over dinner, Lin Yi shared everything that needed sharing, but soon everyone's expressions grew serious again. Wu Hao, who had remained behind due to his weaker combat abilities, furrowed his brow after hearing Lin Yi's account. "If this is truly about exterminating those black bugs alone, it wouldn't matter whether Lin Yi or anyone else went along; it's a straightforward task. I suspect that liquid meant to lure insects also attracts other Zombies; their real goal might be to eliminate more Zombies or even draw out Zhao Pei. After all, its destructive power surpasses that of a hundred Super Zombies—commanding those undead is akin to having a grand marshal for our human nation."
Jerry nodded in agreement after listening intently. Sitting up straight, he added, "Wu is right; our leader has been used here. They must know something about our leader's connection with Zhao Pei; otherwise, things wouldn't have unfolded so conveniently!"
Lin Yi rubbed his forehead and eyes, then looked at everyone with bloodshot eyes and said, "I've thought about this too, but to think that I could lure Zhao Pei out is really overestimating my abilities. I remember that after they encountered the Zombie horde, they immediately handed over command to me. Clearly, they were well-prepared to deal with those Zombies, but only if they didn't run into the Corpseification beast pack. My role was supposed to be breaking through the encirclement at a critical moment, but the power of the Zombies was just too overwhelming, and we failed. As for Zhao Pei's appearance at the end, it must have been an accident; he might have been watching from the sidelines, but how could Kachi and the others know he would come out this time?"
"Even though I didn't participate in the battle, Captain Lin Yi just recounted what happened, and I think all of your roles were merely as bait," Li Qiweng said, a look of fear on his face. "The liquid used to lure the insects must have attracted all the Zombies, but that alone wasn't enough; there had to be a lot of living people to truly draw in the Zombies. Their goal was for you to attract more Zombies; otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to quickly deploy dozens of Armed Helicopters with the best weapons to wipe out those Zombies. We all know how fast the Zombie Virus spreads; they must have aimed for a large-scale extermination of Zombies to minimize any potential survivors."
"I agree with Li Qiweng; we were meant to be cannon fodder!" Pachy said, having experienced the morning's battle firsthand.
Wu Hao stood up and paced back and forth. "Bait is one thing, but why use the fastest Spear of God against ordinary Zombies? Although I'm not from a military background, I still understand that the price of the Spear of God is quite high. They wouldn't waste such expensive weapons on slow Zombies; their ultimate goal is to kill Zhao Pei. They must have some knowledge of Zhao Pei's whereabouts to make such arrangements. So I think everyone shouldn't be too pessimistic about being cannon fodder; in a sense, you participants are the vanguard on the front lines. The role of bait still exists, but from the perspective of higher command, everyone is working towards a common goal. They are confident in luring Zhao Pei out; you just moved ahead a bit early, and they quickly followed up. The reason for that near-total annihilation situation was likely because no one expected Zhao Pei to be so powerful; otherwise, you wouldn't have suffered such heavy losses."
"Whether we're cannon fodder or bait, we need to leave this place as soon as possible!" Lin Yi didn't want to continue arguing about this issue; knowing the truth didn't change the fact that so many lives had already been lost.
"Brother Lin, we should be able to leave tonight; you don't need to worry too much," Jones said as he poured water for everyone and happened to walk over to Lin Yi.
Lin Yi nodded slightly. It wasn't that he didn't trust his team members; he just knew that the more people who knew about certain secrets, the greater the chance they would be exposed. Given the gravity of the situation, Lin Yi had learned that sometimes it was necessary to act decisively. Douglas sat across from Lin Yi and turned pale at Jones's seemingly nonsensical remark, looking quite frantic.
"Once Witerson II and the others return, we'll discuss where we go from here!" Lin Yi said before heading back to his room on his own. The others had nothing else to do and naturally dispersed.
Three days later brought a calm and peaceful morning when an old acquaintance visited again, just as he had during his first arrival. Dressed simply with a wrinkled smile on his face, he walked into Lin Yi's temporary mansion like an ordinary town elder.
Lin Yi had been feeling quite troubled lately and was pacing around at the entrance when he saw Kachi approach with a smile. All his fatigue from recent days vanished in an instant. That long-lost sense of accomplishment returned to him, and Lin Yi relished this feeling.
"Good morning, General!" Lin Yi greeted him warmly with a smile on his face.
Kachi straightened his slightly hunched body and looked up at Lin Yi. Standing on the steps with sunlight bathing him completely made him appear as if he were enveloped in a layer of divine radiance, giving him an otherworldly aura.
"Good morning, Mr. Lin! I've been so busy lately that I haven't had the chance to communicate with you much. I truly apologize!" Kachi smiled, the wrinkles on his face gathering together, resembling a withered chrysanthemum.
Seeing Kachi's weathered smile, Lin Yi felt as if something had struck him hard in the chest. He had originally been unable to forgive Kachi, viewing him as nothing more than a naked fraud. However, from the perspective of Kachi's country, he was indeed a person of great contribution.
"Hey, who is this? Coming to find us so early in the morning!" Tony, who was brushing his teeth and wandering around, remarked sarcastically upon seeing Kachi.
Kachi's expression remained unchanged; instead, he chuckled and said, "The morning air is nice, and this old man enjoys taking walks. I happened to see Mr. Lin here and thought I'd stop by for a chat."
"Our boss Lin isn't the first one here; it's already past ten. Why did General come over only now..." Tony continued his teasing tone. Lin Yi knew that Kachi's visit wasn't for trouble, so he quickly intervened to stop Tony from going any further. After all, if this escalated into something serious, it would be too late to regret it.
