Fate is exciting and thrilling because of its unpredictability. Of course, Lin Yi just wants to be an ordinary person; let others handle the thrilling tasks of saving the world.
Lin Yi had seen Zombies before, but being stared at so openly by thousands of them was truly unsettling. In the eyes of this horde, Lin Yi and his companions were nothing more than a delicious feast.
As one person after another crawled out from the vehicle, they all caught sight of the seemingly endless Zombie Army. Those who had initially wanted to vent their anger found themselves nearly losing their balance in shock.
What was most unbelievable was that this group of Zombies did not rush forward like starving beasts upon seeing prey. Instead, they simply closed in, surrounding the convoy. Their decayed faces, with eyeballs nearly falling out, and tattered clothes covered in dust, approached the human elite warriors step by step. They showed no hesitation or fear because their mission was to instill terror in humanity.
"Everyone, open fire! Clear a path!" Bullet Scar Man shouted from the top of the lead vehicle, brandishing an HQ4 as he began shooting at the approaching Zombies.
The whizzing laser beams danced like chaotic spirits, wildly shooting into the Zombie crowd. The scene was somewhat comical, resembling a child trying to defeat ocean waves with a toy water gun. Hundreds of laser beams seemed to vanish into thin air, only stirring up a little commotion among the advancing Zombie Army. Bullet Scar Man stood atop the vehicle without any concern for being surrounded, showing no signs of taking further action.
Lin Yi regretted not bringing the last Potential Gene Drug; otherwise, he might have had a chance to break through. The rest of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps felt tense as well. Besides their flamethrowers, they only had the previous HQ4 Laser Guns at their disposal. But facing such an overwhelming Zombie Army, where could they escape?
"Boss, why don't we just drive away?" Flower Cannon suggested anxiously as he noticed others shooting leisurely, seemingly oblivious to the horror of the Zombies.
Lin Yi wished he could run away too, but in this situation, there was no escape route for them.
"Everyone hide and prepare for a second wave of fire!" Just as Lin Yi hesitated, Bullet Scar Man suddenly jumped down from the roof and immediately lay flat on the ground. The others quickly ceased firing upon hearing this.
"Get down!" Paul shouted to the other mercenaries as he sensed something was wrong. Although he didn't know what was happening, Bullet Scar Man had clearly been prepared for such a situation; otherwise, he wouldn't have remained so calm while surrounded.
After a series of metallic clashing sounds, Lin Yi caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye as both sides of the truck opened up to reveal rows of missiles extending outward. Each missile was about thirty centimeters long, with ten on each side—totaling one hundred and forty missiles. Before Lin Yi could observe further, the missiles were already primed for launch.
A piercing whistling filled Lin Yi and his companions' ears as they desperately covered their ears to protect their hearing from the noise. At that moment, the Zombies were only a few dozen meters away, and after the whistling came a series of explosive sounds.
The powerful shockwaves from the explosions swept over them; Lin Yi felt as if he might be blown away at any moment. He tightened every muscle in his body to avoid being swept off his feet. At the same time, he silently cursed Bullet Scar Man for not launching the missiles sooner—now they were almost harmed by the aftershocks.
After an unending roar of explosions, fierce flames erupted not far away, blooming like flowers in red and yellow hues—a breathtaking sight.
A breeze swept through, but instead of enticing floral scents, it carried a strong smell of charred flesh and decay. And there were those increasingly close roars; indeed, these Zombies would not be easily wiped out completely. Although each missile possessed immense power capable of obliterating all living things within a ten-meter radius, there were still too few in number. Even with such dense concentrations of Zombies being bombarded by missiles, only half their numbers were reduced.
They could not expect to win this battle so easily, especially since the Zombies were clearly organized this time, aiming to stop them.
The truck was not very large, and it was already quite impressive that it could hold so many missiles. After the missile attack concluded, the group left the vehicle, preparing to depart.
However, before leaving, they needed to see if the Zombies would allow it. The others had rushed over not just to test the power of their missiles. Waves of Zombies trampled over the charred bodies ahead and began charging toward the convoy.
Bullet Scar Man remained on top of the truck, his Flame Gun intermittently spewing flames, incinerating any Zombies attempting to block their path. Yet, the Zombies were unafraid of death; one after another, they stubbornly blocked the front of the convoy, refusing to yield.
Although the Flame Gun was powerful, it required a significant amount of energy. With so many Zombies appearing, everyone feared that they would exhaust their energy before managing to burn through them all. Moreover, this wasteland was a territory for the Zombies; who knew how many more might come rushing in?
Lin Yi felt a strong sense of unease. He wasn't sure if they could break through at this moment. Although they were on a mission with the military, the sheer number of Zombies before them was overwhelming and far beyond what their small group could handle.
"Everyone, use the vehicle as cover! We'll shoot while pushing forward!" Bullet Scar Man's voice came from a speaker atop the truck. His tone trembled slightly; it seemed he hadn't anticipated such a large number of Zombies.
As soon as Bullet Scar Man finished speaking, ten shooting holes approximately twenty centimeters wide opened up on both sides of the armored truck. Instantly, the vehicle transformed into a mobile fortress.
A massive tongue of fire erupted from six trucks in succession. From above, it appeared as if the entire convoy was a gigantic flaming creature crawling forward. Unbeknownst to Lin Yi, at the front of the lead truck protruded a huge triangular blade glinting coldly. The truck surged forward madly, slicing through any nearby Zombies without mercy.
At that moment, rotating metal blades extended from beneath the truck. Any Zombie that managed to break through the flames and attempted to claw onto the vehicle would be shredded into pieces by these sharp edges.
Although Lin Yi did not fully understand the plan, he knew that this military operation had been well-prepared and would not suffer from sudden incidents like before, leading to heavy casualties. Seeing those Zombies being crushed under their fierce assault made Lin Yi's pent-up frustration dissipate significantly. Since dealing with Zombies, they rarely managed to kill so decisively; they were usually on the run from them.
"Boss, don't you think we haven't really contributed much this time?" Douglas said mysteriously while crouching beside Lin Yi and shooting.
Lin Yi considered Douglas's words and felt something was off; it seemed they had been no different from ordinary soldiers all along. In fact, many times they were even less effective since they lacked coordination with those soldiers.
Just as Douglas finished speaking, an annoying voice crackled through the speaker again: "Mr. Lin, several B-Type Zombies have appeared ahead. We kindly request your assistance in dealing with them."
"How am I supposed to deal with them? You have such powerful firepower!" Lin Yi replied irritably, not even paying attention to what kind of Zombie a B-Type was.
"Mr. Lin, we hope you can cooperate with our work. The destructive power of this massive B-Type Zombie is too strong. Everyone knows Mr. Lin's combat abilities; only Mr. Lin can eliminate such a Zombie without a scratch." The other party spoke sincerely, yet there was an unspoken flattery that made Lin Yi feel quite pleased.
"What is a B-Type Zombie?" Jimmy asked, scratching his head.
"It's your Giant Zombie!" Paul, who was driving, turned around to explain.
At this moment, Lin Yi realized that they had called him over but hadn’t even stopped the vehicle. Clearly, they thought he could effortlessly defy gravity like Superman, darting through the air and taking down enemies as if plucking fruit from a tree.
Although no one else could do it, those who had been around Lin Yi long enough understood the peculiarities of the situation. However, in these chaotic times, some things were better left unsaid, especially since Lin Yi had treated them well. Seeing Lin Yi sitting in the back of the truck with a bewildered expression, everyone understood that he was not capable of exterminating those Giant Zombies.
"Boss, I should be fine working with Jimmy!" Flower Cannon eagerly raised his modified HQ4.
"I'm good too; my shooting skills have improved a lot recently!" Bai had also brought his modified HQ4 on this outing and wanted to contribute more to the team.
Paul heard this from the front and automatically rolled down the window of the truck. Flower Cannon, being slender, was the first to charge out. Following him were Bai and Jimmy.
The group's decision-making took only a few seconds, so when the Giant Zombie approached the front of the convoy, Flower Cannon and the others completed their first round of coordinated fire. Despite the bumpy ride of the truck, they successfully took down the first two Giant Zombies.
"Ah~" Just as the three were about to high-five in celebration, Jimmy suddenly screamed with a grim expression.
