Endless waiting is always painful. Lin Yi and the others had been waiting for three days. Still the same mansion, still the same people. Only now, there were no alluring beauties coming to laugh and play, nor were there any high-ranking officials coming to show their support. Just a middle-aged driver who delivered just enough food for survival at every meal, then left without a word.
This feeling was very unpleasant. The big guy, Jimmy, increasingly felt as if a heavy weight was pressing down on him, suffocating and oppressive. He paced back and forth in the hall, ready to explode at any moment. Lin Yi helplessly closed his eyes; he didn’t want to be defeated by reality, but reality was simply too powerful.
“Everyone, he has left us hanging for three days. Shouldn’t we do something impulsive to express our presence?” Flower Cannon finally couldn’t stand the situation anymore. For him, it would be more satisfying to go out and fight Zombies.
Wu Hao waved his hand like a strategist and said, “You’re wrong to think that way. Their purpose is simple; they just want to dampen our spirits. Since they are willing to expend so much effort to keep us here, they won’t just let us eat and wait to die. I believe they will come to us soon to ask for our help.”
Many people nodded in agreement, clearly supporting Wu Hao’s reasoning. Most didn’t know what Wu Hao had done before, but his words always seemed to carry a convincing weight.
Seeing that everyone was slowly suppressing their restless emotions, Lin Yi stood up and scanned the crowd before saying, “Everyone, relax and rest. What needs to come will eventually come, and I will do my best to fight for our freedom.”
These three days had not been easy for Lin Yi either. He always wanted to achieve something, but without Li Qiweng and the Potential Gene Drug, he could only be food for those Bloodthirsty monsters in this wave of Zombies. Lin Yi hoped that Li Qiweng’s father could help him out, but now even their communication devices had been confiscated; they had completely lost contact with the outside world. Lin Yi didn’t want to see any casualties in his team, so he was reluctant to take risks. With only one last dose of the Potential Gene Drug remaining, he had no confidence that it could turn the tide.
“The boss has already spoken; we don’t need to worry unnecessarily,” Jerry said as he got up and walked out. Their range of activities was limited; Kachi was determined to suppress their pride.
Everyone slowly began to adjust their moods. Since there were no combat missions, they might as well conserve their energy. Such leisurely days would surely be few in number from now on. Of course, they didn’t like this kind of comfort bought with freedom; the price was too high.
Lin Yi and the others didn’t have to wait long this time. About two hours later, Wu Di from the mission office and Taichi from the supplies department walked into Lin Yi’s residence together. This time, both of them looked grim; their bloodshot eyes told everyone that they must have been through a lot these past few days.
Lin Yi had been watching the door intently, so when Wu Di and Taichi walked in, he rushed over as if seeing long-lost relatives and asked excitedly, “Is there a mission we need to undertake? I believe we can do well!” Lin Yi had promised Kachi not to step outside until a mission came along; looking back now, he realized how foolish that decision was. For five whole days, they had been suffering, constantly wishing for an opportunity to go outside.
“Mr. Lin,” Wu Di said without the casualness or warmth of previous encounters, his face filled with official seriousness. “I’m here on orders to discuss something with your team.”
Lin Yi nodded in acknowledgment and stepped aside to make way; he knew the moment that would determine their fate had arrived.
The others quickly heard the commotion and hurried downstairs into the hall to see what news these two "big shots" would bring them.
Everyone quickly took their seats as Wu Di and Taichi sat in the center. After surveying the room briefly, Wu Di spoke up: “During your previous mission, you probably discovered a type of black insect that is also infected with the Zombie Virus. The report written by Lieutenant Paul indicates that these insects are highly aggressive. Recently, our rented satellite in Washington has confirmed that there is indeed a group of Corpse Worms active outside this defensive perimeter. We don’t know how aggressive these Corpse Worms can be, but it’s clear that if they attack us, it will be very difficult to defend against them. Therefore, we hope you can assist us in exterminating these insects; this time you will only be providing support while we bring a large force with us.”
After hearing Wu Di’s explanation, Bai quickly asked, “How did Paul become a Lieutenant? Wasn’t he a Major before?”
Wu Di glanced at Bai and said in a calm tone, "Those who have merit will be rewarded, and those who have committed offenses will be punished. I believe everyone is aware of his performance during the last mission. How can someone like him be entrusted with such an important role as Major?"
Bai was left speechless by Wu Di's words and could only lower his head to fiddle with the trinkets around him.
"Are we so quickly deemed worthless that you need to resort to such a clumsy method to send us off as cannon fodder?" Lin Yi had no intention of dwelling on the fact that Paul had been demoted three ranks; he only knew that if they were to confront the Corpse Worms, even with the Potential Gene Drug, he had no confidence in making it out alive.
"Mr. Lin, I assure you, I came here with Director Wu specifically regarding your equipment," Taichi, who had been silent until now, explained.
"Yes, Director Taichi will provide you with new weaponry. Our tireless efforts are indeed for this operation," Wu Di said, rubbing the corners of his tired eyes. The continuous high-intensity work had taken its toll on him.
"What kind of equipment?" Lin Yi felt a pang of unease; he didn't like this feeling.
"Ultra-high-temperature flame throwers! We have improved upon the existing Flame Gun. This upgraded version has a maximum range of one hundred fifty meters, can sustain firing for ten seconds each time, and supports up to one hundred shots. The high temperature emitted by this weapon can quickly melt steel!" Taichi introduced the core specifications of this new weapon, leaving everyone astonished.
Lin Yi nodded; such a weapon would at least give them some chance against the Corpse Worms. He then turned to Wu Di and asked, "When do we depart?"
"Tomorrow morning. We just finished developing this new type of weapon, and we'll produce one hundred units overnight for use in the morning!" Taichi's previously weary face now showed pride; after all, he was part of this improvement effort.
"What about the rewards?" After a long silence, Li Qiweng looked up at Wu Di and asked slowly.
"Well, General Khaki hasn't specified that yet. If Sister Li needs it, I can ask when I return," Wu Di replied. He clearly hadn't realized that Li Qiweng was still concerned about compensation at this moment; after all, the priority should be ensuring their own survival. As for rewards, Kachi hadn't provided any details yet, but Wu Di knew he couldn't leave that matter unaddressed.
"I have a condition!" Lin Yi shouted as if afraid others wouldn't hear him.
Wu Di frowned slightly but quickly returned to normal and asked, "What else does Mr. Lin have in mind?"
"We're only taking ten people for this mission! Otherwise, I can't guarantee my cooperation!" Lin Yi stated firmly, unwilling to leave any room for negotiation.
Wu Di seemed to have anticipated Lin Yi's request and replied without hesitation, "That's fine. However, for the mission to proceed smoothly and for everyone's safety, I hope the ten individuals chosen tomorrow will be carefully selected by Mr. Lin."
Lin Yi saw that the other party had agreed to his conditions without hesitation, so he naturally wouldn't refuse to give them face. He promptly assured them that he would select the most elite forces to act alongside the main troops.
"Everyone is clear about their tasks. We will be here at six o'clock tomorrow morning, bringing you the latest equipment!" Taichi said, having finished his statement, and signaled Wu Di to leave together.
Wu Di and Taichi exchanged a few symbolic words with Lin Yi and the others before hurriedly departing.
The crowd in the hall had not fully processed what the two had said when they had already vanished. Lin Yi understood that this was different from usual, so he didn't want to dwell on it too much. Since he had already agreed to their request, there was nothing more to discuss. It was best to prepare early and ensure they could complete the mission smoothly.
"We're only taking ten people tomorrow, but those who stay behind must pay extra attention to safety. Although we are currently within the human defense zone, our compatriots could find any reason to eliminate us at any time!" Lin Yi prepared to conduct a pre-battle mobilization, but it seemed to have little effect.
Seeing that everyone was completely disinterested in his speech, Lin Yi could only wave his hand, signaling everyone to move about freely.
The next day, before the sun had risen, Lin Yi and the others were already awake. The lingering cold wind blew against their faces, scattering away any remaining drowsiness.
As the clock struck six, clear honking sounds echoed through the streets, indicating that their ride had arrived. Lin Yi led the other nine toward the sound; at this moment, they were all dressed in neat silver Combat Suits, shimmering with dazzling light as it refracted off an unknown source.
With a "screech," the vehicle came to a stop, and a sturdy, dark-skinned man stepped out of the driver's cabin. However, his face was filled with a sense of desolation.
Upon recognizing the visitor's features, Lin Yi gasped softly; he hadn't expected that the one delivering their equipment would turn out to be an old acquaintance.
