Lin Yi wanted to curse a few times, but he also wanted to be polite, so he struggled to hold it in. In the end, he burst into loud laughter; he needed to vent his emotions.
"Try again!" After laughing a few times under the strange gazes of the crowd, Lin Yi quickly regained his composure.
Flower Cannon nodded and fired three more shots in quick succession, but from Lin Yi's expression, it was clear that things were not as simple as they seemed.
"Boss, this guy is just too strange! Every time I shoot, it quickly dodges to the side!" Flower Cannon said with a frustrated look at Lin Yi.
Lin Yi glanced at Douglas and recalled how he had just used the flying knives like a meat grinder. An idea struck him: "Douglas, use your flying knives!"
At that moment, the number of Zombies outside had dwindled to less than a hundred, but Lin Yi knew that the Intelligent Zombie was still summoning more Zombies. To eliminate future threats and prevent being overwhelmed when they needed to retreat, they had to be ruthless.
Douglas understood Lin Yi's intention and immediately closed his eyes to concentrate his mental energy. A short blade shot up with a "whoosh," then it darted out like a missile.
At this moment, Douglas focused all his attention on the short blade, so even with his eyes closed, he could sense everything around the flying knife—more effectively than if he were looking with his eyes open. The speed of the knife was incredibly fast, comparable to that of a regular bullet, covering hundreds of meters in an instant.
Lin Yi's gaze wasn't as sharp; he could only watch Douglas's face to gauge the situation. For the first few seconds, Douglas's expression remained calm, but after a while, his brow furrowed, clearly indicating something was wrong. The others noticed Douglas's change in demeanor and worried about the situation but were afraid of disturbing his attack and ruining everything.
Just as Lin Yi began to feel impatient waiting, another short blade that had been standing beside Douglas suddenly stood up and then shot out like a phantom. Seeing that Douglas still had the strength to control a second short blade relieved everyone; it meant he hadn't exerted all his power yet.
The ordinary Zombies had mostly been eliminated; they just needed to take down that one tough corpse to avoid any further trouble. However, just as Lin Yi let out a sigh of relief, Douglas suddenly exclaimed, "So fast!"
"What's going on?" Lin Yi asked anxiously; he truly did not want any complications.
"Boss, I'm afraid I have disappointing news for you!" Douglas retracted both short blades and looked at Lin Yi with some embarrassment.
Lin Yi felt an overwhelming sense of disappointment but still patted Douglas on the shoulder and said, "It's okay; who knows what strange abilities these monsters have?"
"But I did manage to sever one of its arms!" Douglas added.
Lin Yi forced a smile, at least his expectations weren't completely in vain. He glanced at the time; the helicopter would likely arrive in about a minute. But the closer it got, the more tense he felt. The Intelligent Zombie stood not far away, like a thorn in his throat, making him uneasy.
"Boss, maybe I can help you," Woods suddenly appeared before Lin Yi like a ghost, slightly hunched over, showing no fear.
"Smack!" Lin Yi slapped his forehead, startling Woods into taking a step back, thinking Lin Yi was about to hit him.
"Your shadow friend can carry out assassination missions, right?" Lin Yi placed his hands on Woods' shoulders, excitement evident on his face.
Woods swallowed hard and nodded. When Lin Yi had brought him along earlier, he thought that since they were here to gather information, Woods might be useful after all. But now that he could actually execute a sneak attack, it was a new discovery.
Lin Yi looked at Woods with eager anticipation. However, unlike Douglas, who closed his eyes to concentrate fully, Woods merely trembled slightly as if having a mild seizure. Suddenly, Lin Yi saw a gray shadow drop down from Woods holding a knife; the scene was bizarre.
As the shadow moved further away from Woods, it became fainter until even the gleaming short blade in its hand vanished. Seeing this, Lin Yi couldn't help but shiver; if Woods had approached him with that knife, he wasn't sure if he could have escaped unscathed.
Woods' shadow quickly disappeared, and the ordinary Zombies were mostly dealt with. Many people relaxed and stared at Woods without blinking. Compared to usual, Woods seemed less sleazy but otherwise unchanged. Seeing him appear so nonchalant made everyone feel anxious inside, like fifteen buckets of water being drawn up and down—worried it might all be for nothing.
Time seemed to freeze as everyone watched Woods waiting for the final outcome.
In reality, only a few dozen seconds passed before Woods suddenly snapped back from his serious demeanor to a grinning one.
"All done! That guy was too dumb!" Woods clapped his hands with a broad smile.
The crowd struggled to accept this reality; just moments ago, Flower Cannon and Douglas had failed twice to kill the Zombie, yet Woods seemed to have succeeded effortlessly.
"What’s wrong? Don’t believe me?" Woods teased as he noticed everyone staring at him wide-eyed without any praise.
"Boss, that Zombie's head has already been chopped off!" Flower Cannon had just checked through the scope and confirmed that Woods had indeed slain the Zombie with one swift strike.
At that moment, Lin Yi and the others awkwardly smiled, "Impressive, impressive."
Woods seemed a bit shy to receive so much praise for the first time; he waved his hand dismissively and then retracted his shadow companion and the short blade he had been holding.
"Lin Yi, Wu Hao and the others are almost here!" Pachy looked at the communicator in his hand, his eyes filled with joy.
The last few zombies were eliminated, and the major threat was resolved by Woods. Everyone's faces showed a sense of relief. They could finally enjoy a moment of peace. No matter what would happen next, they had earned this brief tranquility through their hard work.
The sound of the helicopter grew louder, and a dark spot in the distance rapidly expanded. In just about ten seconds, a massive object was hovering above their heads.
The group waved their guns to greet the people on the helicopter, and at that moment, Wu Hao was standing at the hatch, waving back at them. The helicopter began to descend slowly until it finally landed safely.
As soon as the helicopter touched down, Lin Yi immediately urged everyone to get on board quickly. They had almost fallen into danger again, and Lin Yi felt a sense of being deceived once more. Although the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps suffered almost no losses, it was an undeniable fact that the enemy was far stronger than anticipated. Wu Di's intelligence clearly underestimated the enemy situation, leaving them unprepared when they were ambushed; Paul Team was nearly wiped out.
Everyone knew they couldn't afford to delay, so within half a minute, all of them boarded the helicopter. Jimmy, being larger and carrying heavy weaponry, was the last one to get on.
With a loud "bang," Jimmy forcefully closed the Cargo Door, then raised one free hand to wave frantically in the air.
"What's wrong, Jimmy?" Lin Yi shouted over the roar inside the cabin.
Jimmy seemed not to hear him; his eyes were fixed on something in front of him as his arm continued to flail.
Lin Yi frowned; he found Jimmy's behavior strange. The others on board quickly noticed Jimmy's odd actions as well. The helicopter had begun to ascend; they couldn't afford any accidents now.
"Old buddy, what are you doing?" Witerson II said as he approached and couldn't help but pat Jimmy on the shoulder.
"There's..." Jimmy managed to utter a word before it turned into a pained scream. His arm flailed desperately as if something demonic was tugging at it from beyond.
Lin Yi was startled by Jimmy's cry; how could such a tough man suddenly sound so pained? At that moment, Lin Yi's senses were heightened. Although he was momentarily stunned, he quickly noticed a black bug, the size of an adult thumb, desperately gnawing at Jimmy's arm. In that fleeting instant, Lin Yi saw a bloody hole appear on Jimmy's broad arm.
There was no time to waste. If that black bug continued to feast, Jimmy would either die from the pain or bleed out.
"Jimmy, don't move your arm!" Lin Yi shouted, immediately drawing his Silver Soul.
Hearing Lin Yi's voice, Jimmy gritted his teeth and bore the pain, using his other arm to tightly grip the bitten limb.
With a flash of cold light in the cramped space, Lin Yi swiftly sliced through the black bug on Jimmy's arm, cutting it in half.
The severed bug fell to the ground but was not yet dead; its upper half continued to writhe desperately. This thumb-sized creature had a disproportionately large head with a mouth full of sharp teeth that moved frantically, seemingly protesting against those who dared to kill it.
Thud! Thud! Thud! Flower Cannon repeatedly struck the struggling half of the black bug with his short blade until it was reduced to nothing more than minced meat.
At this moment, Aik was diligently tending to Jimmy's wounds. However, Aik's expression was grim; it was clear he was worried about his old comrade's injuries.
"Do you smell something familiar?" Just as Lin Yi was about to ask about Jimmy's condition, he suddenly wrinkled his nose at a scent that felt oddly familiar.
"It's the smell of decay!" Li Qiweng was the first to react.
