"Are we leaving or not?" Flower Cannon's face gradually paled as he heard the various anguished cries and strange thumping sounds coming from the cave entrance.
They all understood that ordinary Zombies were not enough to put Paul's team in such a dire situation; they must have encountered something unusual.
"If we really abandon them and retreat, we have to consider whether we can evade the authorities' pursuit!" Pachy's eyes flickered as he quickly weighed his options in his mind.
It wasn't that they didn't want to leave immediately, nor was it that they lacked the ability to do so. However, at this moment, leaving meant they would face a life-or-death crisis right away.
Lin Yi slapped his forehead, looking somewhat anxious, but he still tried hard to control his emotions.
"Jimmy, Flower, you two guard the entrance while we figure out what's going on in here!" Lin Yi decisively began to organize their efforts. He had thought of many possibilities, but he never expected the situation to escalate beyond his control. Lack of experience could be deadly; Lin Yi could only console himself with that thought.
Everyone quickly took their positions. Lin Yi and Pachy stood at the cave entrance. Although they decided to stay behind, they weren't foolish enough to venture inside to see what was happening.
In just a few seconds, the commotion inside the cave grew more intense. Lin Yi understood that everyone inside was desperately trying to push their way out. But the entrance was only so big; no matter how hard they tried, they could only come out one by one.
Various screams echoed around them, making Lin Yi's heart race. Although he wanted to go down and save people, whether Paul and the others could escape with their lives was now left to fate.
"Bang!" Just as Lin Yi's mind was in turmoil, a bloody hand reached out from the cave entrance. The veins on that hand bulged as its owner struggled to climb up.
"Ah~" With a long sigh, a burly man emerged from the cave—none other than Paul.
Paul was drenched in blood, as if he had just walked out of a sea of it. There were even chunks of flesh the size of a baby's fist visible on him. His face was twisted in agony and fear; it was hard to imagine what kind of horrific scene he had experienced down there.
"Vulture! Run!" Paul struggled to stand up but swayed unsteadily as if he couldn't maintain his balance.
Although Pachy didn't like this person, he realized that Paul might be an important asset for everyone to escape Trouble. He called out to Witerson II, and together they helped Paul up. Aik immediately tended to Paul's injuries to prevent him from being infected by zombie toxins. Before they arrived, Wu Di had already given them half of the Serum for emergencies. Of course, Lin Yi knew that his team still had some Serum left; it just wasn't necessary to use it all at once.
At this moment, Lin Yi didn't think too much about it. Seeing that only Paul had made it out, he felt uneasy but decided it was time to run.
"Bang!" Just as Lin Yi and the others turned to retreat, a silver Metal Box was thrown out from the cave entrance. A long, grating sound suddenly echoed through the empty hall, piercing their hearts with an unsettling discomfort.
Lin Yi's eyelids twitched. At the moment the Metal Box was tossed out, a bloodied hand also reached out from the cave. However, this hand was incomplete, revealing stark white bones, yet its owner desperately tried to use it to pull themselves up.
Bai Yi leaped forward and grabbed the box just as the owner of the hand revealed their head.
"Doctor!" Lin Yi exclaimed in shock.
The doctor was no longer the same person they had known. Though it had only been a brief separation, he had already changed drastically. His once round face now had only half remaining intact; the other half had been nearly devoured, with various bits of flesh hanging loosely over bone. One eyeball precariously rested on his nose bridge, threatening to fall at any moment.
The doctor extended his other hand, which was even more gruesome. His sleeve had been torn away, exposing a bloodied and mangled arm. The flesh on this bloody arm was almost entirely gone, leaving little but bone behind.
With only the lower half of his mouth remaining, the doctor slightly opened his mouth and stretched out his arm as if reaching for something. The last eye that could still move fixated intensely on Lin Yi, while his arm weakly waved.
Suddenly, a long shadow emerged from behind the doctor's head, followed by a bird-like creature with an impossibly large beak that began pecking at the intact part of the doctor's face.
The doctor couldn't even let out a scream; perhaps his throat had already been pierced by the monstrous bird.
"Hehe," was all that escaped him, sounding like air escaping from a punctured tire. The last traces of fear and longing in his eyes vanished completely.
All of this transpired in mere seconds. Lin Yi raised his gun but hesitated on whether to fire.
"Run! Those are Corpseification Vultures!" Li Qiweng shouted as he pulled Lin Yi and started sprinting outside, his voice tinged with rare urgency and anxiety.
"Not good! They're coming after us!"
As Li Qiweng dragged Lin Yi toward the exit, he witnessed a horrifying scene. One by one, Corpse Vultures leaped out from the cave entrance. Their bodies were covered in decaying flesh, and their once vibrant beaks were now pitch black. One vulture opened its beak at an impossible angle as if trying to split its head in two. Fortunately, it did not split apart; instead, its eyes remained fixed on Lin Yi and the others, sending chills down their spines.
Just as Lin Yi and the others burst through the doorway, at least ten Corpse Vultures had already jumped out from the cave. They lined up neatly, poised and ready to attack at any moment.
Lin Yi did not know how many Corpse Vultures were left, but it was best to strike while they were still weak.
“Zzz~” The members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps were not foolish. As soon as Lin Yi raised his gun to shoot, they understood his intent and quickly raised their own weapons to fire.
Beams of deadly light shot into the hall, instantly throwing the once-arrogant vultures into chaos. The remaining feathers scattered everywhere, and the room was soon filled with the stench of blood and decay.
More than ten Corpse Vultures were swiftly taken down by the powerful Laser Guns, leaving behind a floor covered in charred flesh and an air thick with strange odors.
“Roar~” Just as Lin Yi felt a slight sense of relief, a monstrous roar erupted from the entrance.
“Damn it, there are Zombies in here!” Flower Cannon exclaimed, holding an oversized HQ4 modified Laser Gun that seemed mismatched for his physique.
Lin Yi raised an eyebrow, sensing trouble. His fears were soon realized when a Zombie, with only half a face remaining, crawled out from the entrance. It staggered towards Lin Yi and the others, its body seemingly unable to move with any grace. Despite having only a few bones supporting one leg, it was driven by an insatiable thirst for blood.
This Zombie was none other than the doctor who had just fought alongside them. Now, however, the only thing left in its single eye was a primal urge for bloodshed, devoid of any human emotion.
Li Qiweng closed his eyes in pity, while Lin Yi swiftly raised his Laser Gun and aimed at the doctor’s head, ending its last moments in this world.
“Tony, blow up the entrance!” Lin Yi called out to Tony, who was on guard nearby. Although Tony wasn’t particularly strong, his love for basketball allowed him to throw grenades with pinpoint accuracy.
The entrance was still a bit far from them; to prevent any further surprises, Tony’s remote grenade toss was the best solution.
With a loud explosion, smoke filled the entire room. At that moment, Lin Yi and the others had already retreated and prepared to fall back.
Paul had regained consciousness after Aik's simple bandaging. Aik had noticed Paul was still injured while supporting him and decided to inject him with some Serum just in case.
“Thank you!” Paul said respectfully as he bowed slightly to Lin Yi and the others.
Lin Yi merely glanced at Paul without much reaction. After all they had been through during this time of life and death, he had grown indifferent to unexpected events concerning life.
"Quickly contact someone to come pick us up!" Although the team was already moving away from the house, Pachy's worry showed no signs of diminishing.
Paul glanced at the Metal Box in Bai's hands, seemingly wanting to take it back, but ultimately decided against it. He then picked up the communicator and began to call for a helicopter. After a beep, there was an immediate response on the other end.
Once it was confirmed that they had obtained what they wanted from this operation, the other side asked no questions and assured them that a helicopter would be dispatched within three minutes to bring them back.
Paul lowered his head somewhat dejectedly. He had expected at least some inquiry about casualties, but to his surprise, that topic wasn't even mentioned. The lives of these dozens of elite members seemed worthless compared to the Metal Box.
"How did you manage to eliminate those vultures? When we went down earlier, we were completely unprepared and caught off guard by them," Paul said, looking up with lingering fear.
"It wasn't that many; there were only about ten or so," Lin Yi casually replied. Then he suddenly realized something, his back chilled as he grabbed Paul by the collar and asked, "What did you see down there?"
"The vultures' nest. It seems they found an entrance to a basement somewhere else. I saw at least fifty inside, maybe even more. At that time..." Paul's face grew paler as he trembled, pointing shakily into the air, his lips quivering but unable to make a sound.
Suddenly, a strange screech echoed from above. Lin Yi and the others looked up to see a dark mass in the sky, resembling a cloud, rapidly approaching them.
"Run!" Someone shouted in terror, and everyone felt a chill run from head to toe.
