Before the great army set out, there was always a mix of solemnity, exuberance, or boiling blood. However, as Lin Yi packed everything and prepared to leave, he found himself faced with a troubling matter. 0

"Are you really going with us?" Lin Yi hurriedly took a few bites of bread, crumbs sticking to his lips. 0

"Then why can Sister Wen go?" Hai pointed at Li Qiweng, who kept her head down but occasionally glanced at Lin Yi and the others, as if afraid they would vanish at any moment. 0

Lin Yi helplessly looked at Li Qiweng. Since everyone called her "Sister," she naturally had to step in to diffuse the situation. Yet, Li Qiweng seemed oblivious, focused solely on organizing her Laser Gun. 0

"She can take on ten by herself!" Lin Yi had no choice but to speak the truth; he couldn't bear to watch a delicate girl risk her life against zombies. 0

"I can run faster than most of you can catch me!" Hai protested, puffing out her chest. However, due to malnutrition, even with her chest puffed out, it lacked much allure. 0

Lin Yi didn't know how to refuse her; perhaps he never understood how to properly turn someone down. 0

"What do you mean by that?" Lin Yi asked knowingly. 0

"Let's go together; if we die, I won't hold you responsible!" Hai shouted, her voice echoing throughout the room. 0

... 0

A massive Black Helicopter roared overhead, but the busy crowd below had no time to spare for a glance. Ever since the entire nation entered a state of heightened security over a decade ago, various flying objects had been zipping above their heads. 0

This was Lin Yi's first time viewing the super city he had lived in for several years from the air; it was indeed vast. Due to the disaster, areas not originally under Addis Ababa's jurisdiction were now included in a unified defense zone. High walls had been erected around the perimeter at breakneck speed, with the entire nation's strength devoted to this effort—no one dared slack off when survival was at stake. 0

The city was large, but helicopters were fast. Before Lin Yi could fully appreciate the enormity of this fortress, they had already flown beyond its boundaries. Their destination was a university research institute located thirty kilometers away from the defense zone, which was now completely overrun by zombies. 0

Thirty kilometers was a joke for a helicopter, but for everyone's safety, they still dispatched one for transport. Just as everyone began to adjust to the roar of the helicopter, it started its descent. 0

The rapidly spinning rotor blades kicked up dust from the ground like a swirling tornado. 0

"Spit!" "Spit!" "Spit spit spit!" 0

Everyone who stepped out of the Cargo Door couldn't help but spit out the dust and gravel that had blown into their mouths, shielding their foreheads with their hands to prevent the wind and sand from blinding them. 0

Once everyone had disembarked, the helicopter immediately ascended and flew away, leaving behind a group of people eagerly looking up. 0

"This operation is led by our Government Forces; you only need to assist us in defense," a young officer in his thirties finally spoke up after everything had calmed down. 0

"Oh? Has Major's injury healed? General Khaki is willing to send you out for such a dangerous mission?" Lin Yi remarked, his tone often sharp. He disliked being treated as just a subordinate. Moreover, he believed that the combat capabilities of these people were no match for his Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps. 0

"Mr. Lin, Mr. Pachy can defeat me!" Pachy declared, his gloved hand pointing at Lin Yi. "I can take on ten of you!" 0

"Do it again if you can!" Lin Yi hated arrogance the most and felt he had to reclaim his dignity. 0

"Alright, everyone, I am a representative from the Intelligence Agency. This operation to seize resources will be primarily led by me, so I hope everyone will cooperate," just as the argument was about to escalate, a short man suddenly squeezed out from the crowd of Government Forces. 0

Lin Yi looked at the man wearing gold-rimmed glasses and dressed impeccably, feeling that he looked quite out of place among them. 0

"I can't disclose my name; even Major Paul doesn't know it. Just call me Doctor!" The short man adjusted his glasses habitually and glanced at a watch-like device on his wrist. 0

"We are still one kilometer away from our destination. We landed here to avoid being overwhelmed by Zombies over there. Now let's head that way; I've just received aerial reconnaissance indicating that only a few Zombies are wandering around," the self-proclaimed Doctor said while shaking the device on his wrist. 0

Lin Yi and Paul knew that continuing to argue here would be tantamount to courting death. Their mission to seize resources allowed for no mistakes. The area they were in was extremely desolate; apart from sparse trees, there were hardly any buildings in sight. 0

The group followed the Doctor toward their destination, encountering numerous darkened Skeletons along the way. These were likely remnants of people who had been completely devoured by Zombies, leaving only bones behind. Accompanied by the sound of whistling wind, Lin Yi thought he heard faint calls of strange birds; however, when he looked around, all he could see was desolation. 0

After walking for about five minutes, Lin Yi spotted a path covered with debris. The surrounding trees had become slightly denser, and signs of buildings were becoming more apparent. 0

"We should be close now. My surveillance drone can only monitor within a one-kilometer range for three hours; I hope we can resolve this quickly," Paul said as he pulled out a palm-sized Mechanical Bird from his backpack and tossed it into the air. The Mechanical Bird flapped its wings and took flight. 0

Lin Yi and the others secretly envied them; their ragtag group could never compare to the well-equipped Government Forces. The gear they casually tossed around was something they had never even seen before. 0

"Quack quack~" Just as the Mechanical Bird soared into the sky, a series of hoarse, eerie cries suddenly echoed around them. The sound seemed to come from all directions, leaving the group dizzy and unable to pinpoint its source. 0

"Move quickly!" The doctor seemed to sense something was amiss and immediately urged everyone to pick up the pace. 0

Lin Yi regretted not bringing Aoling Er along; at least she could sense any dangers ahead. But now it was too late, and they had no choice but to press on. 0

Just as they hadn’t gone far, angry roars filled the air. 0

"Roar~" The familiar yet repulsive sounds reached Lin Yi's ears; old "friends" were back. 0

"Defensive formation!" The doctor pulled out his Laser Gun, clearly more skilled than before. 0

Lin Yi's task was to protect this leader, and he decided not to worry about anything else. 0

Suddenly, the ground began to tremble slightly, and the vibrations grew stronger! It felt as if a group of giants were wildly pounding on the ground, causing Lin Yi's body to tingle. 0

"Roar~" A Zombie limped out from the forest. Its hollow eye sockets were fixed on the group, with a part of its white eyeball threatening to fall out at any moment. But it paid no mind; seeing fresh flesh was its only desire. 0

"Zing!" A blue light flashed, and the Zombie that had been gnashing its teeth with blood at the corners of its mouth had its head blown apart. 0

"Hmph, it’s nothing special!" Paul lowered his gun, a smug smile on his face. 0

Seeing this scene, Lin Yi set aside his rivalry with Paul. Those who had never faced the vast Zombie Sea had no right to compete with him. 0

This was just the beginning. After Paul eliminated one Zombie, several more emerged from the forest in quick succession. However, they moved noticeably faster than the first one, their decayed faces showing clear excitement at the sight of fresh prey. 0

"Quick, shoot!" Paul seemed flustered for the first time upon seeing multiple Zombies rushing toward them; his first shot missed entirely. 0

Fortunately, their numbers were at least greater than those of the Zombies, preventing any panic. Lin Yi's group remained still in front of these creatures, their thoughts echoing: "We've seen bigger scenes; why should we fear these few?" 0

The power of the Laser Gun was immense; as long as it concentrated on the Zombies, they would lose a body part, if not their lives. In less than ten seconds, the seven or eight Zombies that rushed out were blown to pieces by a barrage of gunfire. 0

"Major, check if there are any other Zombies around!" The doctor spoke urgently, clearly worried about the possibility of more mutations occurring. 0

Paul nodded and picked up the Receiver from his backpack to check the messages sent back by the Mechanical Bird. 0

"This is bad; the Mechanical Bird is under attack!" Paul exclaimed, his expression changing instantly as he looked at the Receiver. 0

"What’s going on?" Lin Yi felt a jolt of alarm. Could the Mechanical Bird really be attacked by Zombies? 0

Everyone quickly gathered around to look at the Receiver in Paul's hand. They saw it shaking violently, as if something was striking against the Mechanical Bird. 0

"Is that a crow?" one soldier asked. 0

"The Mechanical Bird has an automatic obstacle-avoidance feature; it wouldn’t actively engage with birds. But this crow is acting strangely—why is it attacking the Mechanical Bird?" Paul furrowed his brow, unable to make sense of it. 0

Lin Yi watched as the wings on the Receiver continued to shake. Suddenly, the scene shifted, and a long Scarlet tongue lunged toward the Mechanical Bird! 0

"This is bad!" Lin Yi snatched the Receiver from Paul's hands. 0
