During Pachy's first official negotiation with Addis Ababa, he immediately chose a residence for their family, conveniently located next to the hospital where Lin Yi was staying. Lin Yi had always been the backbone of their group. His prolonged coma left them feeling lost and directionless. After enduring countless hardships to escape with their lives, Pachy put considerable effort into selecting their new home, making several demands. Of course, they knew that fulfilling these demands would come at a significant cost, but that was not a concern for them. Those who have faced life and death understand that surviving is the foremost priority.
Li Qiweng led the way, while Witerson II and Jimmy escorted the Shadow Thief. Surprisingly, the Shadow Thief remained relatively quiet throughout the journey, not shouting or causing a scene. They hadn’t traveled far from home, so it didn’t take long to return.
This was Lin Yi's first time seeing the house where his team members lived; it occupied nearly a thousand square meters and was indeed upscale. The main building stood nearly fifteen meters tall facing the street, flanked by two slightly shorter auxiliary buildings on either side. All three structures were surrounded by a high wall, with a swimming pool in the center. However, the pool was divided into two sections by a long driveway, preventing the central area from appearing too stark.
"This is my first time living in such an upscale place!" Lin Yi scratched the back of his head, feeling an inexplicable sensation. Not long ago, he had been merely an administrator at a research institute; now he was leading a mercenary group with considerable wealth and superpowers. Life is unpredictable.
"With money, there's nothing to fear!" Tony seemed quite pleased with the mansion and quickly picked up his pace toward his room.
Lin Yi chuckled lightly; after days of exhausting struggles, having such a nice place for everyone to rest felt like a blessing.
Of course, their primary goal was still to understand the situation regarding the Shadow Thief. If this person was just an ordinary thief, it would be manageable; however, if he were sent by the authorities to monitor them, they would need to carefully consider their next steps.
Lin Yi had never conducted an interrogation before and lacked experience in such matters. Therefore, he decided to leave it to Wu Hao and Jerry; they would likely achieve results quickly.
In fact, within just ten minutes—before Lin Yi had even finished exploring half of the mansion—Wu Hao and Jerry had already completed their "interrogation" and gathered all necessary information.
"Boss, we've basically figured things out. This guy is named Woods; he's just a habitual thief who steals whenever he's short on cash. However, due to his seemingly supernatural abilities, he has never been caught before. He didn't expect to be captured by us this time; he's just been unlucky. The penalties for theft in this country are severe, so as long as we don’t turn him over to the police, he’s willing to help us with anything," Jerry said excitedly, bouncing around as he spoke.
"People who walk along the riverbank inevitably get their shoes wet. But if this guy has such skills, why doesn’t he target wealthy individuals instead of causing trouble on the streets?" Lin Yi didn’t have much fondness for thieves but also didn’t harbor strong disdain; after all, choosing that path might not have been his true desire.
"I observed him closely; Woods is essentially a good person at heart. He hasn’t done anything too outrageous—just a bit lazy," Wu Hao was quite adept at understanding human psychology, so his words carried weight.
Lin Yi nodded but wore a smirk that made others uneasy.
"Boss, what are you planning?" Jerry noticed Lin Yi seemed to have something mischievous in mind and shivered slightly.
"Isn’t he willing to help us with anything? Let’s recruit him; his abilities could be very beneficial for us in the future," Lin Yi laid out his plan without any need for pretense regarding his teammates.
"Yes, I think so too. His shadow ability allows him to stealthily infiltrate dangerous places and help us with many things that we can't do ourselves," Wu Hao agreed, perhaps due to his special feelings for the Ability User.
Just as Lin Yi was preparing to continue his imaginative exploration of Woods' role, Li Qiweng and Pachy rushed in from the room.
"The War Supply Department wants us to come over," Pachy said. Given his special status, he usually handled official matters, so he was the first to receive news from the authorities.
"Okay, but what for?" Lin Yi replied lazily; he wasn't fond of running around.
"It's related to the interests of our entire team. It would be better if we went," Li Qiweng said seriously, looking at Lin Yi with some dissatisfaction at his unintentional display of reluctance.
Lin Yi could only shrug helplessly and agreed to go take a look. In truth, his body hadn't fully recovered yet, and prolonged activity still caused him some pain. However, since it concerned the team's interests, he naturally couldn't take it lightly.
Seeing that Lin Yi had no objections, Pachy immediately left to bring out the vehicle rented for everyone’s use when they first took this place.
The streets weren't very crowded, and there were no traffic jams. Lin Yi, Li Qiweng, and Pachy quickly arrived at the War Supply Department based on the address provided.
The Supply Department was bustling with people, surrounded by large container trucks. The busy scene stood in stark contrast to the desolation of other places. Even in such a busy area, as soon as Lin Yi and the others got out of the car, a person who seemed to be a steward came specifically to greet them and led them into the department.
The Supply Department was vast; Lin Yi couldn't see the end of it at a glance. Aside from those responsible for transporting goods, there were armed soldiers everywhere. These two factors were significant bottlenecks in the development of such weapons, which is why it was Lin Yi's first time seeing so many people equipped with them.
As they walked quietly through the facility, Lin Yi felt somewhat out of place but dared not complain while observing the strict security measures in place. After passing through three massive steel gates, their guide finally stopped.
Inside a room made of synthetic metal, there was a heavy sense of oppression. In a space of less than ten square meters sat an officer who appeared to be recording something on a screen with an electronic pen. Upon seeing Lin Yi and the others enter, the officer nodded at their guide, who then stepped back outside.
"Hello, I am Lieutenant Colonel Taichi from the Supply Department Management Committee," the officer said as he stood up. He was surprisingly tall—almost as tall as Pachy. He took two steps toward Pachy and politely shook his hand while completely ignoring Lin Yi standing in the middle.
Although Lin Yi felt a bit uncomfortable inside, he had learned to keep his emotions in check after experiencing some events.
"Hello, Director Taichi, this is my superior, Mr. Lin Yi," Pachy said, clearing his throat awkwardly before quickly introducing Lin Yi. It wasn't that he was afraid Lin Yi would be displeased; rather, after going through a demotion, he had lost the desire to compete for fame and profit.
"Oh, Mr. Lin, I apologize. I thought leading such a formidable team would require someone with a powerful presence like Mr. Pachy!" Taichi's expression was exaggerated, seemingly to mask his own embarrassment.
Lin Yi chuckled lightly, feeling somewhat self-conscious about his slightly bulky figure.
"It's alright. I just wanted to ask why you called us here, Mr. Taichi?" Lin Yi quickly shifted the topic, silently resolving to improve his personal strength.
"Your team led by Mr. Lin has caught our attention from various aspects. We are truly impressed by your combat capabilities. After discussions at the wartime command center, we have decided to provide your team with the most advanced weapons. We believe that under the unified equipment of these weapons, you will surely soar to new heights!" Taichi's demeanor had returned to normal, and he spoke with an official tone.
As the saying goes, one who doesn't take advantage of a good deal is a fool. With advanced weapons being offered so readily, Lin Yi naturally wouldn't refuse. Although he didn't believe in free handouts, his team had fought their way out of dire situations; it was reasonable for the authorities to offer assistance.
"What kind of weapons are we talking about?" Lin Yi could no longer contain his excitement. Since the other party had taken the initiative to help, it likely wasn't anything subpar.
Taichi did not answer Lin Yi's question but walked over to a wall and opened a box. Inside the box was a display screen. Taichi widened his eyes at the box as if performing a retinal scan. After completing the scan, he entered a long string of passwords into the displayed password field.
Suddenly, "Boom~" The entire room seemed to tremble slightly as the previously seamless wall slowly cracked open from the center towards both sides.
