The preciousness of a person lies in the steadfastness within their heart. For the most cherished thing in their hearts, they strive tirelessly, constantly unleashing every ounce of their potential. Perhaps the meaning of life is simply this: to passionately pursue the most beautiful things deep within oneself.
If high-speed trains can be described as racing at incredible speeds, then Lin Yi at this moment could be described with the same term. His body, drenched in blood, resembled a red train rushing forward. Li Qiweng was only a few dozen meters away from him, but those few dozen meters felt like an insurmountable chasm filled with danger for her.
One after another, Zombies were sent flying by Lin Yi as he disregarded the fiery pain in his chest. Perhaps he had forgotten to care about his own suffering; all he could see was Li Qiweng, who was trapped in peril. He wished he could attach rockets to his legs to propel himself faster because even though they were so close, it felt as if they were worlds apart.
It seemed like an eternity had passed, yet from the moment Li Qiweng called out Lin Yi's name to when he reached her side, less than ten seconds had elapsed. During that time, everyone could only see a blurred figure performing various difficult maneuvers at an unbelievable speed. In the process of this figure's frantic movements, countless Zombies ultimately lost their lives.
"Haah..." Lin Yi barely had time to catch his breath as he saw Li Qiweng smile warmly at him just before she fell unconscious. She believed in him, just as he believed in her.
Three Giant Zombies would normally require considerable effort for Lin Yi to deal with. However, at this moment, he had no time to spare. One of the Zombies had already extended its decaying, foul-smelling arm toward Li Qiweng as she collapsed. It was attempting to lift her up and strangle her; for it, Li Qiweng was no more than an infant. It knew no humanity; killing a baby would surely bring it joy.
Lin Yi would not allow such a thing to happen. He had to save her, save the one he loved. But there was no time left; he was fast enough, yet the Zombie was too close to Li Qiweng. He didn't even have time to throw his blade to obstruct its movement; all he could do was shield Li Qiweng from that virus-infested giant arm.
As Lin Yi dashed toward the Zombies, he realized it was already too late. So he did not stop; he charged directly toward Li Qiweng's fallen form. In an instant, Lin Yi managed to block the Giant Zombie's arm with his back.
"Shh..." The sound of a blade piercing flesh echoed as Lin Yi had previously been the one stabbing Zombies in the chest. Now, however, he felt a large hole forming in his back from the claws on that arm. But there was no time for him to grimace in pain; his beloved was still in danger. Though his steps were unsteady, he had to muster all his strength and leave this place immediately. Taking advantage of the moment when the Zombies were still stunned, Lin Yi shouted and lifted Li Qiweng into his arms. Then, using the momentum from his leap, he propelled himself several meters into the air, escaping the encirclement of three Zombies.
Surrounded by more Zombies, Lin Yi felt lost; holding Li Qiweng meant she could easily be scratched and infected by Zombie Virus. Although he felt his strength waning, he gritted his teeth and pressed on. He couldn't give up; perhaps the safest place in this fortress right now was where his Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps was located.
The Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps worked together due to their individual strengths. Although they were currently surrounded by Zombies, they could still provide a safe zone. Lin Yi's only hope now was to reach that safe area quickly; however, endless waves of Zombies seemed focused on him—no matter how he tried to evade them, they surged toward him like a tide. The Giant Zombie that he had just escaped from also thundered after him with heavy footsteps.
Though Lin Yi felt anger rising within him, he couldn't act recklessly. Fortunately, his agility allowed him to practically step on the heads of Zombies as he raced toward his team. But that wasn't enough; Lin Yi needed to stop the bleeding and obtain Serum to control the virus. He could feel his emotions spiraling out of control; the urge for bloodthirst grew stronger.
"Douglas! Come help me!" With the Giant Zombie closing in behind him, Lin Yi had no choice but to shout for assistance.
Lin Yi had no idea what was happening behind him; he didn't even have time to look back. All he heard was a muffled sound followed by Douglas nodding solemnly at him.
The greatest threat behind him had been eliminated, but the surrounding Zombies remained troublesome. Lin Yi couldn't swing his blade against them; all he could do was kick them away.
In a team, it's crucial not to abandon any member; thus Lin Yi was not alone. Pachy and Witerson II stood back-to-back as they fought their way toward Lin Yi's direction, clearing obstacles for him ahead. Lin Yi felt grateful but had no time for words; often friendship is expressed through actions rather than words.
In reality, they weren't far apart at all; Lin Yi pushed himself harder as Pachy and Witerson II provided cover until he quickly rejoined his team. Of course, others weren't just standing by—they were also clearing threats for Pachy and Witerson II.
Lin Yi carefully examined Li Qiweng's body and was relieved to find no wounds, just that she had fainted. It was only at this moment that Lin Yi felt a burning pain in his chest and back, as if they might break with the slightest movement.
Aik, acting as the medic, immediately began to check Lin Yi. Although there were no advanced diagnostic machines, Aik relied on his experience to determine that Lin Yi's ribs were likely fractured. As for his back, there were five distinct wounds, each about half a centimeter wide and one centimeter deep. Aik quickly injected Lin Yi with Serum to prevent the virus from spreading to a critical level. After that, he took out his portable first aid kit and swiftly applied pressure to stop the bleeding on Lin Yi's back. The tourniquets Aik used were military-grade; once placed on the wound, they could instantly halt bleeding and also had anti-inflammatory properties. Eventually, the tourniquet would dissolve into nutrients that would seep into the flesh.
However, treating Lin Yi's chest injury was more complicated since a fractured bone wouldn't heal quickly. This meant that the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps had suddenly lost two major combatants. At a time when their fighting strength was already stretched thin, losing two more fighters made their situation even more dire.
The battlefield was chaotic, with everyone essentially fighting for themselves. However, the Zombies' attacks were clearly calculated; the Giant Zombies were maneuvering near armored vehicles and other heavy weapons. They seized every opportunity to attack those steel monsters while trying to minimize their own casualties.
Lin Yi felt increasingly anxious as he saw no hope for victory. They had only three doses of Potential Gene Drug left, and the road ahead was long. If they used them all now, they might face crises later on. Even if they used the Potential Gene Drug to boost their combat power, what about everyone else? They would still be in danger.
"Slo! Where are you, Slo!" Lin Yi shouted into the communicator; he needed to discuss strategy with Slo—they couldn't just keep attacking blindly.
But there was no response from Slo; it seemed he had vanished.
"What's going on? Has anyone seen Slo?" Almost everyone was engaged in battle, except for Hein, who had to take a break due to fatigue from continuous shooting. During this time, Flower Cannon had gradually discovered Hai's impressive shooting potential and had been eager to teach her how to use a sniper rifle. Although Hai usually kept to herself, she was now actively helping Flower Cannon learn how to shoot. Just moments ago, she had been making precise long-range shots that surpassed many professional soldiers.
"When you charged out first to kill the Zombie, Mr. Slo stayed with the team and followed behind you," Hai explained while giving Li Qiweng a gentle massage in hopes of making her feel more comfortable. "Afterward, everyone became too preoccupied with their own battles to pay attention."
"That guy always seems to be doing something else at critical moments!" Lin Yi said irritably; their situation was worsening by the minute as more Zombies appeared while their numbers dwindled. If this continued, it would only be a matter of time before they were overwhelmed.
"Hey, buddy! Where did your leader go?" Lin Yi shouted at a soldier standing not far away on an armored vehicle.
The soldier glanced at Lin Yi but ignored him and continued shooting; it was clear his movements had become frantic.
"Something's off; I can sense his emotional fluctuations are intense!" Wu Hao chimed in from the side. His strongest ability—mind reading—was nearly useless at this moment, which left him feeling quite awkward.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yi knew Wu Hao wouldn’t make baseless claims.
"I'll ask again!" Wu Hao wasn’t very sure but shouted a few more questions; however, the soldier paid him even less attention.
Though Wu Hao felt embarrassed, he managed to extract some information.
"From my earlier mind reading of him, it seems that guy named Slo has already left the battlefield!" Wu Hao's voice rose sharply enough for those nearby to hear.
"Damn it, is this guy really trying to run away by himself? Unless he grows wings in this situation!" Lin Yi grumbled, rubbing his increasingly painful chest.
"I don't know, but that soldier seems ready to leave. We can just follow him when the time comes. As a local, Slo might actually have some way to escape!"
Lin Yi understood that there was no time to hesitate and nodded. After all, this wasn't the first time they had to flee.
Just as Lin Yi was contemplating how to take Li Qiweng with him, the soldier who had been in the armored vehicle suddenly crawled back inside. Then, the vehicle abruptly reversed, turning its front towards the left and speeding away.
"Everyone, follow me!" Lin Yi felt a sense of urgency; if those soldiers ran away now, they would be left behind and face certain death.
But then Lin Yi faced a dilemma: what about Li Qiweng? They had no vehicle, and even if someone carried her, there wasn't enough strength to protect both Li Qiweng and her rescuer from the zombies' attacks.
Lin Yi closed his eyes for a moment and then quickly took off his jacket. He swiftly cut it into strips with his knife. After connecting the fabric pieces together, he hoisted Li Qiweng onto his back and secured her tightly to himself!
Once everything was ready, the armored vehicle hadn't gone far yet. Pachy had already led a team to chase after it, while Lin Yi and those who remained followed closely behind.
When the first armored vehicle took off, not many people noticed at first. But as Lin Yi and his group began to flee one by one, the soldiers finally realized what was happening. They were being treated as cannon fodder; if they didn't leave soon, they would become food for the zombies.
Thus, the soldiers began to scatter in a chaotic retreat, lacking any sense of teamwork as they fled for their lives.
