Despair is a terrifying emotion; once it spreads, it becomes a silent weapon that kills without bloodshed. But how can one master such an intangible feeling?
The cries of Reagan echoed around them, leaving everyone uncertain about what to do next. What they had thought was an impregnable fortress had now turned into a hell on earth. There was nowhere to escape, and nothing to hold onto; the anxiety was etched on everyone's faces.
“How many people have already fallen under Reagan's control?” Lin Yi felt overwhelmed. He had hoped for a moment of respite, only to find himself facing an even greater dilemma.
Slo sighed deeply at Lin Yi's words. “He hasn't controlled many people, but the central area where he is located is where the weapons are stored. That makes it difficult for us to fight against him!”
Upon hearing this, the others furrowed their brows. They were already running low on resources and now faced this predicament!
At that moment, the massive iron gate that had been tightly shut suddenly began to bang loudly, shaking loose stones from the walls.
“We can only fight to the bitter end! There are many Zombies outside, and they could break through our defenses at any time! If that happens, we’ll be trapped on both sides, making it even harder!” Lin Yi and the others quickly adjusted their mindset to prepare for greater hardships.
“Our troop strength was already limited. After accounting for those sent out for passage defense, we only have one battalion left. The good news is that our forces are under our control; the bad news is that Reagan has a large number of Zombies at his command,” Slo succinctly outlined their current situation. He looked at Lin Yi with suspicion; after all, the circumstances were too strange. Anyone could be the hidden villain. Although there seemed to be no reason for Lin Yi and his group to harm them, given Reagan's actions, doubt was inevitable.
Lin Yi disliked being suspected by others because he was certain he was a good person. Noticing Slo's uncertain gaze, he understood what was on the other’s mind. In such a situation, mutual suspicion between their groups would be detrimental to the imminent bloodshed.
“Wu Hao, find a way to alleviate their concerns about us!” Lin Yi thought of Wu Hao as someone who could read minds and believed he could resolve this trouble.
However, Wu Hao replied helplessly, “I can sense their distrust towards us, but I can't influence his thoughts without leaving traces!”
“What about Jerry? Is his condition any better?” Lin Yi noticed that Jerry's lips had turned dark blue. Asking him to use his Ability again would undoubtedly risk his life, but he felt compelled to ask nonetheless.
Jerry shook his head in response. “No, it's not possible. The recovery time is too short; even if I were to try with a cat, I would struggle to succeed—let alone with someone who is highly alert towards us!” Jerry gasped for breath; he was clearly exhausted.
The most spirited among them was Li Qiweng; she seemed ready to charge into the Zombie Sea alone. However, the others had just survived a life-and-death battle and were now doubting their teammates—things did not look optimistic.
“Brothers, let’s work hard to take down the Zombies!” Lin Yi surveyed the surroundings and spoke earnestly to everyone in the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps. Actions, not words, would always prove oneself.
“Yes!” Everyone looked steadfastly at their Captain, Lin Yi. Perhaps many of them still held disdain for his words, but they had to admit that he brought hope to them.
Slo might have felt that his doubts were unnecessary. Observing the spirit of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, he decided that no matter what, they should focus on winning this battle first.
“Mr. Lin, we definitely can’t retreat now. We either kill Reagan and those who have already turned into Zombies, or we wait for death!” Slo approached Lin Yi and expressed his determination seriously.
Lin Yi nodded and said, “Let’s head to Reagan’s gathering point now; we have no choice but to fight!” Although Reagan occupied the armory, they still had firearms to resist with. The most crucial point was that Reagan's subordinates were all Zombies; they couldn’t operate firearms!
Li Qiweng appeared particularly impatient; she could hardly wait to rush into the horde of Zombies and wreak havoc. Their situation wasn’t the worst yet. After Reagan took control of the central urban area, he didn’t continue attacking but instead fortified his position. The center of the Golden Card Fortress was the inner city, surrounded by walls three to four meters high. The exits were guarded by Slo’s armored vehicle, making it costly for the Zombies inside to break out.
After receiving Lin Yi’s desperate cries for help, Slo initially planned to ignore him. However, upon realizing they had reached the entrance, he hurried over. Now he led everyone back to the central urban area, but those without weapons stayed in the outer city. The group drove various vehicles into the inner city area in a grand procession.
At this moment, all exits of the inner city had been blocked by the military. The once solemn and imposing defensive walls were now filled with all kinds of Zombies. They stood ready like an army, unlike the usual Zombies that would rush forward mindlessly to tear apart any humans they encountered.
Lin Yi couldn’t help but click his tongue at the sight before him. No matter how strong a fortress was, it could become easy to breach from within.
“Hahaha! So, are you all ready to accept my transformation and submit to my Lord's will?” Reagan's voice suddenly echoed in the air.
Lin Yi squinted at Reagan, who seemed quite pleased with himself up in the air. He couldn’t understand why someone would act so irrationally. However, his thoughts were far more focused than that man who only laughed in mid-air; he discreetly signaled to Flower Cannon.
Reagan continued to proclaim his theory of immortality in the air, completely unaware that death was drawing near.
“Bang!” Of course, this sound could only be heard within a limited range; Flower Cannon’s sniper rifle was equipped with a silencer.
As Lin Yi secretly rejoiced in his own cleverness, he noticed that Reagan, who had been floating triumphantly in the air, quickly retreated to the top of the city wall.
"Did you miss?" Lin Yi asked Flower Cannon, as he still had faith in Flower Cannon's marksmanship.
"Impossible! Even if he had noticed it in advance, he might not have been able to dodge!" Flower Cannon replied, equally incredulous; he distinctly remembered hitting his target.
"You actually ambushed me!" Reagan shouted with a voice that sounded like a broken gong, piercing and unpleasant even from several dozen meters away.
"Wait, he's injured!" Slo, with keen eyes, spotted Reagan clutching his arm, a grimace on his face.
Lin Yi nodded; he didn't want their first shot to go to waste. That would be disheartening for everyone.
"Fine! Since you refuse my toast and instead choose punishment, let's fight to the death!" Reagan yelled loudly but did not take to the air again, clearly afraid.
The others felt a chill run down their spines at the murderous intent in Reagan's voice; this was a situation where neither side would back down.
"Go tear apart his hypocritical face!" With that command, Reagan vanished from the wall, leaving no trace of where he had gone.
The zombies, who had been motionless until now, seemed to come alive at Reagan's order. Their heads, which had been slightly bowed, all lifted in unison.
"Roar~~" A wave of zombies let out a furious roar that shook the air.
"Everyone, prepare to fire!" Slo shouted through the communicator; he was now the highest commander of this unit.
The tank's cannon was further adjusted towards the exit, and the mounted machine guns made their final aiming adjustments.
"Roar!" The Zombies began their assault, their relentless momentum once again unfolding before Lin Yi's eyes. He despised this feeling.
Although several armored vehicles were stationed at various exits, their firing rate was still insufficient to halt all the Zombies. Like a swarm of locusts, the Zombies possessed astonishing vitality; even those with only half a body would crawl forward. They were unafraid of death, or perhaps they had already become corpses.
The living would feel fear; anyone witnessing a creature with only half a torso and a face full of decay crawling toward them would be terrified. It stretched its withered black hand as if begging for something. What it sought was not simple—it craved the fresh blood and flesh from the living.
Gunfire erupted, accompanied by roars and curses that echoed across the battlefield. As the Zombies launched their frenzied attack, more and more people became infected with the Zombie Virus. Fortunately for Lin Yi's side, the situation remained relatively optimistic, especially with the invincible superhuman Li Qiweng on their team. Yet no matter how hard they fought to slash at the Zombies, it was still like trying to quench a thirst with a drop of water.
Slo could only pick up a Heavy Machine Gun and fire wildly at the horde of Zombies pouring in through the entrance, but it had little effect; Zombies on the walls simply jumped down from above. More and more Zombies pressed forward, nearly surrounding every combat team with their clawing hands, seizing any opportunity to bite into a living person.
Several members of Lin Yi's team lacked combat ability and could only resist with their guns under heavy protection from others. Lin Yi had initially been pleased that his team included a powerful Ability user like Douglas, but now he was exhausted and could only close his eyes to rest.
At that moment, the previously inconspicuous Number 19 displayed remarkable bravery. Armed with a large knife he had found somewhere, he charged to the front lines, wildly hacking at the Zombies. Though he was thin, he fought like a madman among the horde of Zombies, thriving in the chaos. Despite being attacked repeatedly by Zombies, he continued to press forward as if nothing were wrong.
Wait, why did he show no reaction despite being scratched by a Zombie? A flicker of doubt crossed Lin Yi's mind as scenes flashed through his memory—Number 19 had clearly been hit in the corridor but seemed completely unharmed. Now, he had been clawed multiple times without any sign of injury.
Various thoughts raced through Lin Yi's mind; what had once been despair on his face now transformed into excitement!
"Hahahahaha." Suddenly, Lin Yi's manic laughter echoed across the battlefield after enduring such a long fight.
