Everyone has their own dreams and strives hard to achieve them. However, dreams are often as elusive as flowers in water or the moon in a well. What should one do when faced with hardships on the path to their dreams? One cannot easily give up, just as we cannot easily give up breathing.
Lin Yi could not understand what Reagan's desires were, or what drove him to pursue such irrational actions with such madness. Was the taste of power truly so wonderful that one would regard the lives of others as insignificant?
The sound of thumping grew louder in the darkness; they had no way out now, only a fight ahead. But how could they face the unknown difficulties? Even with all their strength, they could not confront the tide of Zombies surging toward them. Each sound echoing from the dark entrance felt like a heavy hammer striking against their chests, causing discomfort.
Jiao Jiao was losing control of her emotions; she pounded frantically on the massive steel door. Screaming for those inside to open it, she was not afraid of battle—she was simply terrified of waiting for death.
Yet no one on the other side paid her any mind, or perhaps there was no one there at all. Watching Jiao Jiao scream in agony, Lin Yi furrowed his brow and walked over to pull her back. Hai also approached Jiao Jiao, trying his best to comfort her.
The sounds in the darkness grew increasingly loud, and Lin Yi signaled for everyone to prepare for battle. Only six doses of the Potential Gene Drug remained, and with eighteen people in their group, it was far from enough. Relying on drugs could not last long; no one knew how many Zombies there truly were.
Just as everyone raised their guns, ready to fire, a figure suddenly darted out from the darkness.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" Several people fired their weapons, and the figure that had just escaped the shadows fell to the ground. Yet even after being hit multiple times, it seemed to still be alive and was groaning.
"Wait, that was a human!" Lin Yi reacted quickly this time and immediately stopped his team from shooting.
Lin Yi hurried over to the figure and realized it was Number 19! They had intended to take him with them during their retreat but had not found him in the rush and assumed something had happened to him, leaving with regret.
"Mr. Lin, they... it..." Number 19 clearly struggled to express himself, but his panicked expression said it all. The defense team must have been completely wiped out by now.
Although Lin Yi felt something was off in his heart, with danger looming ahead, he did not dwell on it too much and pulled Number 19 back into their group.
"Captain, what's going on?" Flower Cannon asked while holding her gun aimed at any approaching Zombies as she moved closer to Lin Yi.
"The Zombies have breached our defenses. If we can't save ourselves, we can only prepare to accept death," Lin Yi replied seriously as he raised his own Silver Soul. He had received three doses of the Potential Gene Drug but had already used two; he needed to think carefully about how to use the last one.
The Defensive Formation was quickly organized, with Pachy and Li Qiweng specifically tasked to deal with the Giant Zombie while the others provided support. After all, with only this small group, achieving a perfect defense was quite a challenge.
The first wave of attacks naturally involved firearms, continuing until they ran out of ammunition before engaging in close combat. All weapons were aimed at the approaching demon, and they unleashed their fury! Fortunately, thanks to Slo's resource support, their ammunition was relatively sufficient. Even with continuous consumption, they could hold out for a considerable time. Most importantly, they only needed to defend the front, allowing Lin Yi and his team to concentrate their firepower without worrying about being flanked by Zombies.
Everything happened within seconds. Just as everyone was getting ready, the first Zombie appeared. It was also a Giant Zombie, swinging an iron rod as it charged toward Lin Yi's team. Lin Yi looked at the grotesque creature with disgust, noting its decaying flesh and bloodied lips.
Lin Yi aimed carefully; just as the Zombie was about to leap in front of him, he fired several shots in quick succession, hitting his target each time. Over this period, he had transformed from a novice into a decent marksman. However, his skills were still no match for professionals like Bai and Flower Cannon; he could only hit targets at close range.
A few shots were not enough to pose a lethal threat to the Giant Zombie, so Lin Yi quickly stepped back. Pachy and Li Qiweng flanked the Zombie from both sides, launching a coordinated attack. Even though the Giant Zombie had some cognitive abilities, it struggled against opponents attacking from both sides. Coupled with Lin Yi's earlier shots hindering its movements, Pachy and Li Qiweng swiftly severed its arms.
Taking advantage of the Zombie's diminished combat ability, Witerson II leaped up and struck down toward the Zombie's head.
The sound was akin to a fruit knife slicing through a watermelon as Witerson II used his momentum to cleave open the head of the Giant Zombie, which was significantly taller than him. The black brain matter erupted forth, filling the air with a pungent stench.
In less than ten seconds, the first Zombie was taken down through the cooperation of four people. However, there was no time for celebration as more Zombies were already closing in.
A torrent of gunfire rained down on the relentless horde of Zombies that charged forward with wild cries. The area that had just been cleared of numerous Giant Zombies now faced another wave. Despite this, their numbers still felt insufficient to handle the overwhelming tide of Zombies.
"It looks like I have to use my medicine!" Li Qiweng said as she moved closer to Lin Yi. Although her speed in taking down ordinary Zombies was impressive, she couldn't withstand this wave of corpses alone.
Lin Yi didn't want Li Qiweng to risk herself so recklessly. Among the four who possessed Gene Drugs, she was the only one who hadn't used hers yet—her previous use in Mombasa didn't count. Moreover, Li Qiweng had ample experience; if she took the Gene Drug now, she would surely unleash even greater potential.
"Alright, Wen, safety first!" Lin Yi expressed concern over Li Qiweng's reckless approach. He genuinely wanted someone else to take the Gene Drug instead. However, his position as leader of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps relied heavily on Potential Gene Drugs. He feared that revealing this last secret would diminish his value significantly. Nevertheless, Lin Yi knew he needed to cultivate his own absolute power base—someone he could trust—otherwise he wouldn't know how to navigate future challenges safely.
The Gene Drug might be one of humanity's best research achievements; it could unleash all human potential in a short time without side effects. After secretly taking the drug, Li Qiweng instantly transformed into a superwoman.
Everyone felt a blur in front of their eyes, as if a shadow had flown past them. While they were still in a daze, Li Qiweng had already plunged into the horde of Zombies.
At this moment, Li Qiweng had maximized her potential in every aspect; she could see the movements of each Zombie clearly. Those creatures seemed frozen in place, and when Li Qiweng struck back with her blade, they showed no reaction. Everything happened too quickly; if the Zombies had any awareness, they would only see a figure swinging a sharp weapon across the necks of each Zombie.
“Thud~”
“Thud~”
“Thud~”
It sounded like coconuts falling from a palm tree, the thudding noise echoing continuously. In what felt like an instant, the Zombies around Li Qiweng had already fallen in droves. A blank space surrounded her, preventing any Zombie from getting close.
“This must be what they call a Zombie harvester!” Aik and his companions, limited in combat ability, could only assist from the sidelines. Watching Li Qiweng unleash her power was more than just envy for them.
Li Qiweng possessed both speed and strength; the Zombies could hardly break through her defenses. Taking advantage of this gap, the others hurriedly checked their gear. Jiao Jiao, Hai, and Reiko no longer needed to hold back; they desperately pounded on the iron door, hoping someone would let them in. However, no matter how loudly they shouted, there was no response from the other side.
“Damn it! When I see those bastards who won’t open the door for me, I swear I’ll tear their mouths apart!” Jiao Jiao cursed angrily.
Although Li Qiweng was like a whirlwind harvesting the heads of Zombies, their numbers didn’t seem to decrease at all; in fact, they appeared to be multiplying!
“Oh no, they’ve all undergone Corpseification!” Lin Yi suddenly spotted a familiar face among the Zombies, sending chills down his spine. The once-honest face was now smeared with blood, half of it gnawed away to reveal white teeth and red flesh beneath.
“It’s that commander from earlier!” Pachy exclaimed as he saw the familiar Zombie charging past Li Qiweng’s defenses, instinctively taking a few steps back.
Pachy didn’t want to fight someone he had just battled alongside, even if that person had now become a Zombie.
Witerson II couldn't afford to think too much. Seeing Pachy retreat, he quickly charged forward. The only way to deal with these ordinary Zombies was to swiftly swing his knife and sever their necks. However, this time Witerson II wasn't so lucky. Just as he rushed toward the commander of the Corpseification, two more Zombies flanked him from either side. At that moment, Witerson II found himself facing three Zombies, and he was just an ordinary person. His only option was to choose one Zombie to fight against; all he could do was move quickly—faster, faster!
Witerson II moved swiftly, delivering a fatal blow to the former commander. He then turned and struck at the Zombie approaching from the right. With a dull thud, his large knife cleaved down, and the Zombie's head fell to the ground.
"Hiss~" Witerson II let out a painful hiss. Without needing to look back, he already knew that a Zombie had bitten him. He had charged too far ahead without anyone to guard him; how could he avoid such an accident?
"Ha!" Witerson II gritted his teeth against the excruciating pain and swung his knife again, cleanly slicing the Zombie in half at the waist. However, it made no difference; the Zombie still clung to his arm.
"Witerson II, duck!" Pachy shouted as he rushed forward with his knife. Witerson II complied and ducked just in time for Pachy to slice off most of the Zombie's head that was biting him.
"Quick, inject him with Serum!" Pachy glanced at Witerson II's wound and was startled; if they delayed any longer, he would likely undergo Corpseification.
Aik caught the Serum that Pachy handed over, preparing to inject it into Witerson II.
But just then, a series of increasingly loud thuds echoed in their ears. From the sound alone, they could tell how many Giant Zombies were approaching.
In front of them lay an endless horde of Zombies, behind them were closed iron doors, and in between stood their increasingly exhausted group.
Unless a miracle occurred, they had nowhere left to retreat.
