Nothing is more real than reality itself. In the face of harsh reality, the question remains: should one bow down and compromise, or resist with all their might?
Lin Yi and his team thought they would encounter no danger, believing that this mission would be completed easily. Especially after arriving here and seeing the defense system in place, they felt a high level of safety. However, reality proved to be unforgiving, and they faced yet another significant crisis. Compromise was not an option; their survival depended on it.
"Slo, how much longer until you arrive? We can barely hold on!" Lin Yi could only call out desperately to Slo, but it seemed that they were also facing difficulties, as he was told to hang in there. No one could have anticipated what kind of problems awaited them at the Golden Card Fortress, even disregarding the attack on the painstakingly constructed passage.
Zombies closed in step by step, and the resistance team slowly retreated until they found themselves at the entrance of the unfinished passage. The defense forces were now in a state of intense struggle, armed only with firearms. Soldiers who had run out of ammunition could only throw stored grenades with all their might. Yet against such a relentless horde of Zombies, even their efforts with grenades failed to intimidate them.
At this moment, Lin Yi noticed that most of the Giant Zombies around had been cleared away. He couldn't just stand idly by; he had to demonstrate his capabilities as a Captain. The sharpness of the Silver Soul in Lin Yi's hand was astonishing; if he had enough strength, he could slice through a stone pillar with a diameter of half a meter in one stroke.
Dealing with these defenseless Zombies was easy for Lin Yi—one strike for each. However, his teammates surrounded him, allowing him to fight so recklessly. But there were too many Zombies; they howled and waved their withered claws, trying to devour the humans before them or what they considered delicacies.
Fortunately, these Zombies were slow due to not having eaten for days. The members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps were influenced by Lin Yi and each equipped themselves with a knife. At this moment, the advantage of cold weapons became apparent; after dealing with numerous Giant Zombies using firearms, they could now fend off the relatively weaker ordinary Zombies with knives.
"Mr. Lin, our captain is looking for you!" Just as Lin Yi was practicing his knife techniques through gritted teeth, a dark-skinned man suddenly ran up to him and called out.
Lin Yi glanced at the soldiers fighting desperately and nodded before following the man. When he arrived that morning, he had merely exchanged nods with an officer before they both got busy with their own tasks. Although it was just a nod, Lin Yi sensed disdain in the officer's eyes towards him and his group.
"Sorry for neglecting you this morning!" As soon as Lin Yi reached their defensive position, a stout man stood up from beside a rotating machine gun and walked over to him.
Lin Yi was puzzled by this sudden change in tone and scratched the back of his head.
"Excuse me, sir, what do you need from me?" Lin Yi couldn't grasp the man's intentions but felt an ominous sense that something bad was about to happen as he observed the man's pale expression.
"Our troops are on the brink of collapse, but this passage was built at the cost of countless lives; we cannot abandon it now when it's almost complete!" The officer spoke quickly, glancing nervously at the heart-wrenching cries of Zombies nearby as if fearing they would charge at any moment.
Lin Yi's heart sank for a moment; he hadn't considered this issue at all. No matter how dire the situation, he had a trump card in hand, and escaping with his life was completely feasible.
"How much longer can we hold out?" Lin Yi didn't want to be besieged by Zombies; after all, two fists couldn't fight against four hands, and even a scratch from a Zombie could spell disaster.
"At most ten minutes, and that's the best estimate!" The commander’s voice was hoarse, likely due to a lack of rest.
"Isn't there a passage built jointly? Why hasn't anyone come from the other side?" Lin Yi half-expected a response from Slo, but there was no reaction from the other fortress at all.
The commander sighed, "For the sake of command unity, we alternate sending troops from our two fortresses. Today, it's our turn from Jin Card City."
Just as Lin Yi was about to ask more questions, the commander interrupted him anxiously: "I see your team has both men and women, and your combat ability seems decent. I hope you can go back and help find reinforcements."
At that moment, Lin Yi wanted to say, let our people hold the line while you retreat! But he couldn't bring himself to do it; he felt selfish. Why should his people face such danger just because of his words?
However, true to Lin Yi's character, he couldn't simply applaud and agree. He asked with a trembling voice, unsure if it was excitement or fear, "Can you hold out after we leave?"
The commander clearly didn't underestimate Lin Yi's team; his gaze remained resolute. "No matter what, defending our homeland is our duty. Even if we can't hold it, we must fight with all we've got. This is our territory; it's our highest honor. If we lose it, how can we face returning home?"
Although Lin Yi wanted to continue listening to the commander's impassioned speech, he knew time was running out. The Zombies' attacks were becoming increasingly fierce, while their firepower was steadily diminishing due to the relentless consumption of ammunition.
"Time is of the essence; I will immediately return with my team to get reinforcements!" For the first time, Lin Yi moved so quickly to handle something. He wasn't sure if he should leave like this, but he truly didn't want to stay behind and die! At that moment, Lin Yi felt a bit of self-loathing—was he being too hypocritical or too virtuous?
The other members of the Mercenary group saw Lin Yi chatting hurriedly with the tall officer before they rushed back, occasionally glancing at Lin Yi.
As he walked, Lin Yi waved his hand and called out, "Everyone, quickly deal with the surrounding Zombies; we need to retreat first!"
"Are you going to be a coward?" Tony shouted, always enjoying putting others in a difficult position.
Lin Yi's face flushed with embarrassment as he replied awkwardly, "No way, we're going back to get reinforcements!"
The others nodded in understanding, but their hands didn't stop; instead, they quickened their pace to take down the approaching Zombies. They were well aware of their current situation, but if they started thinking about running at the first sign of trouble, they would eventually end up getting themselves killed.
Lin Yi clearly recognized the harsh reality; moral integrity could be set aside for now. They were here to help, not to sacrifice themselves. Moreover, Slo had a patrol Armed Helicopter, yet there was no support at all! Lin Yi decided that when they returned, he would definitely teach this unreliable guy a lesson.
The Mercenary team had been working together for a long time, so there was no issue with retreating in chaos. After quickly dispatching the surrounding Zombies, each member grabbed a grenade and threw it at the Zombies attempting to close in.
With a series of loud explosions, the Mercenaries immediately got up, barely taking the time to brush off the dirt before rushing towards a transport vehicle.
Although their combat skills weren't particularly impressive, their ability to escape was unparalleled. Pachy and Akin took the front seat of the transport truck while the others jumped into the back.
As Lin Yi and the others left, a significant gap appeared in their defenses. The pressure on the defensive troops was immense, but they lacked sufficient manpower to resist. The earnest commander could only order everyone to keep shooting desperately, but it couldn't stop the relentless onslaught of Zombies.
In no time, one construction vehicle after another was overturned by the Zombies, and the drivers were dragged out. The screams barely escaped their lips before being silenced by the claws of the Zombies. As pain reached unbearable levels, those tormented by the Zombies could only convulse helplessly. However, the Zombies wouldn't let them suffer for long; hungry mouths opened wide as they devoured the tender flesh of humans.
The sound of Zombies chewing echoed in the ears of others like a hellish symphony that sent chills down their spines. Yet this group of soldiers did not falter; after firing their last bullets and throwing their final grenades, they drew their machetes and charged at those bloodthirsty demons.
"Kill!" The primal urge for violence erupted completely at that moment as soldiers with bloodshot eyes raised their machetes and rushed toward their mission.
Lin Yi didn't see much; he only vaguely noticed that the commander had also drawn his sword and gave him a thumbs-up. Lin Yi felt he could sense the commander's confidence; even though he didn't know his name, it didn't diminish Lin Yi's admiration for him. Brave individuals are always worthy of respect, especially those willing to sacrifice themselves.
Pachy accelerated the vehicle to full speed; it felt like every ride was a desperate escape. However, this time they were fleeing with purpose—they were on a mission to save more people.
About twenty minutes later, the vehicle arrived in front of the massive Iron Gate. However, the closed gate gave everyone present an unsettling feeling.
Lin Yi had been calling out to Slo the entire way, but this time there was no response. Now that they had reached the entrance, the communicator remained silent.
Just as Lin Yi was about to knock on the iron door, Slo's urgent voice came through the earpiece: "Reagan has taken Commander hostage; he wants everyone in the city to listen to him!"
"What? How could this happen?" Lin Yi couldn't believe the situation had escalated like this. He truly didn't understand what had gone wrong with Reagan.
"I was about to ask you the same thing; he's one of your companions!" Slo was clearly furious, but he also realized that Reagan and Lin Yi were not on the same side at all.
"We just happened to cross paths; he used to be the mayor of Dander City!" Lin Yi was equally baffled. Did Reagan want to be the boss again? What a time for such a strong desire for power!
"You'd better not enter the city now; he's turned everything upside down!" Slo sounded helpless, regretting that he had brought such a big trouble upon them.
Just as Lin Yi prepared to continue, he suddenly heard heavy footsteps approaching from down the corridor.
Zombies were coming!
