Wonderful things are always fleeting, often ending just as they begin. Perhaps this is a rule set by the heavens to encourage people to keep moving forward, with hope lying just ahead, requiring continuous effort to enjoy the most beautiful moments.
As dawn broke, a commotion erupted outside. A new beginning meant the arrival of a new, tense, and exhausting time. Lin Yi reluctantly opened his eyes, but deep down he felt grateful; this might have been the most peaceful night he had in nearly a month. At that moment, he realized he didn't need much—just a bed and a stable environment.
The Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps was mostly composed of professional soldiers, so any noise outside roused them from their slumber. There were no beds in their resting area, so tidying up was out of the question; everyone simply washed up and headed out.
Slo was already waiting outside the door, clearly having risen early.
"Good morning, Mr. Lin! I apologize for the humble conditions!" Slo said cheerfully as he approached and patted Lin Yi on the shoulder in a friendly manner.
Lin Yi nodded somewhat listlessly; just thinking about the upcoming mission made him feel uneasy. At heart, he was still an office worker—he enjoyed adventure but didn’t relish risking his life.
Slo didn’t quite grasp the multiple meanings behind Lin Yi's nod but understood that they needed to send him and his team out of the city to carry out their mission. He briefly explained things to Lin Yi before leading the way toward their destination.
The group squeezed into a bus heading in the opposite direction of their arrival. It seemed they were going to exit through another gate. According to Slo's introduction, their network project involved connecting various fortresses through solid ground passages to form a unified defense system. Although working on the surface was dangerous and not as straightforward as digging tunnels, the scale of such an undertaking was immense—so vast that by the time it was completed, either all the zombies would be eliminated or humanity would have succumbed to corpseification. While surface passages posed significant risks, proper defensive measures could mitigate threats from zombies. Given that the distance between Golden Card Fortress and the next city was relatively short, both cities had been working around the clock to complete most of the project at a miraculous pace. They were now at the midpoint of connecting the two fortresses, and Lin Yi’s group was there to provide final assistance in completing this endeavor.
The bus sped along, with pedestrians willingly clearing a path for them. Before long, they arrived at another exit. Lin Yi led the way off the bus, and others followed without much objection.
Noticing some concern in Lin Yi's eyes, Slo continued explaining: "There are Armed Helicopters constantly patrolling between our two fortresses, and we have real-time monitoring from Satellites during construction. If any zombies approach, we will have sufficient support immediately available. So please rest assured; our surface defense forces are mainly precautionary."
Lin Yi merely smiled faintly and waved his hand dismissively as he led everyone onward. Reagan and his son had initially planned to accompany them but decided against it since Reagan needed someone to look after him. Lin Yi wasn’t worried that Slo would betray them; there was no benefit in doing so.
At that moment, a massive steel plate blocked their exit, indicating that their defensive measures were indeed thorough. As Lin Yi’s group prepared to depart, the steel plate slowly moved aside. To everyone's surprise, it was their old acquaintance No. 19 leading them this time. Everyone liked this cheerful boy; his optimism and bright smile were infectious.
The military responsible for defense had been stationed at the construction site around the clock, facing those endless zombies without a moment's respite.
The passage was dark as they entered behind transport vehicles carrying materials; behind them, the massive iron gate slowly closed again. With the steel door sealing shut, they were plunged into an oppressive darkness. At that moment, all three engineering vehicles turned on their headlights simultaneously, illuminating what had previously been an almost pitch-black space. Now it was bright enough to see even the cement debris in the corners clearly.
"Look over there!" Li Qiweng suddenly pointed at the bright edge and tugged at Lin Yi's arm.
Lin Yi squinted and followed Li Qiweng's finger.
Instantly, he felt a chill run down his spine. Although he had seen enough corpses and skeletons, seeing a human arm again made him uneasy. After all, it was a part of a fellow human being's body; no matter how many times he encountered such sights, it still felt unsettling to see it alone.
"Did an accident happen here?" Lin Yi's brows furrowed tighter; he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being played.
The accident he referred to was, of course, the loss incident.
Li Qiweng didn't respond directly, but it was clear she also sensed the strangeness of the place. If this area were safe, why would a human arm be casually discarded in the corridor?
"Once we draw our bow, there's no turning back. I think even if we wanted to go back now, they wouldn't let us through," everyone was seated in the last empty engineering vehicle, facing the already closed steel gate.
"Yes, today marks the day when both corridors start connecting. I don't think they would play any tricks; otherwise, it would be a joke to waste so much manpower and resources building a safe passage," Lin Yi, as the leader, knew he couldn't let morale drop before they even began.
Seeing everyone's skeptical expressions, Lin Yi had no choice but to pull Aoling Er over and say, "Come on, our Reiko is a great sorceress; she'll warn us if there's danger."
Aoling Er felt a bit embarrassed by Lin Yi's sudden tug but nodded and said, "I don't feel anything wrong. Although my feelings were accurate the last two times, please don't really think I have any magical powers!"
"Hahaha~" The group burst into laughter at Aoling Er's charming demeanor, and the atmosphere lightened considerably.
In fact, after hearing Lin Yi analyze Aoling Er's abilities earlier, everyone had some faith in her. After all, who would have thought that zombies would suddenly appear? A beam of light shone down on the vehicle where Lin Yi and his group were, who had been in darkness for a long time. They quickly got out of the car, preparing to start their defensive work. At this moment, they were essentially hired hands, unable to act according to their own wishes.
The connection project on both sides was expected to be completed by eight o'clock that evening, and Lin Yi and his team were responsible for defense near the construction site. At this moment, more than twenty Leopard tanks were already stationed nearby, and numerous Heavy Machine Guns had been set up. The workers on site were Engineers, ready to switch to combat mode at any time. This section of defense could withstand an attack from an infantry division for a short period; of course, if this force directly attacked the infantry division, the infantry would only have a chance to flee.
However, this was not enough. In the early stages of defense, electric fences had already been established on both sides. The threat of Giant Zombies first became apparent during the initial phase of construction when a group of them launched a surprise attack, causing significant damage to the electric fences and nearly halting the project. That disaster resulted in almost total casualties among the construction and security personnel, reminding everyone once again of the threat posed by these Zombies.
It had rained all night last night, but today was clear. Although it was still somewhat chilly, the climate in the Southern District was pleasant. A gentle breeze brushed against everyone's faces like a lover's caress. This brief moment of peace allowed members of the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps to enjoy a rare tranquility; such days were already quite good.
There were no specific assignments among them; they all gathered together. It wasn't that they wanted to slack off or procrastinate; it was just that in this unfamiliar place, those who had once shared life and death together were the most trustworthy. Lin Yi felt a mix of fortune and misfortune about being assigned to security work here just as the project was nearing completion. He often found himself recalling that figure who had turned away so gracefully. He knew it was always there; he just didn't want to encounter it.
"Everyone stay alert; if we complete our mission today, we can leave," Lin Yi said, glancing at everyone and noticing their confusion. As the leader, he needed to encourage them to rally and find purpose.
Everyone nodded, wearing somewhat forced smiles. They understood the special circumstances but felt lost about what lay ahead; a few words from Lin Yi couldn't resolve everything.
Everything was quiet except for the sounds of construction vehicles working back and forth. However, peaceful days often felt dull; Lin Yi did not enjoy such monotony.
In his hand was a communication device linked to Slo Union, which informed him that no Zombies had been detected yet.
But just then, Lin Yi suddenly noticed something unusual happening on the ground outside the electric fence. The previously flat surface began to bulge slowly as if something was trying to break through from below.
"Something's happening!" Lin Yi shouted as he raised his gun toward the bulging spot, his heart racing faster.
The others turned their attention sharply toward that patch of land at Lin Yi's shout. A thin layer of dry grass covered it, obscuring whatever might be underneath.
With a sudden "pop," something emerged from the ground, and everyone realized it was a rabbit.
Just as they prepared to laugh at Lin Yi's jumpiness, that rabbit was suddenly caught by a large dark hand!
A terrifying scene unfolded as a giant hand grasped the rabbit, and its owner emerged from the ground.
A Zombie! A Giant Zombie! It had buried itself underground!
"Fire!" Lin Yi was the first to raise his gun and shoot. Although he tried hard to aim at the Zombie, his accuracy was abysmal.
The creature wouldn’t give him any chances; with a few dodges, it was already at the electric fence. Even the Giant Zombie would be harmed by the high-voltage net, so it swung a thick wooden stick it had found somewhere, relentlessly striking at the fence before it.
"Machine Gun team, support now!" Witerson II had already rushed to the machine gun crew, urging those who were still in shock to start firing. Bullets collided with the electric net, igniting countless sparks—brilliant yet fleeting.
Unfortunately, this Zombie was too ferocious; several volleys failed to hit its vital points.
"Not good! Another one is coming!" Suddenly, someone shouted, pointing into the distance.
Everyone followed his gaze and saw not just one but many Zombies emerging from the ground. However, this time, they weren’t as frightened because they had sufficient defensive power.
But just as everyone quickly activated their defense systems, they suddenly realized that the electric net, which had been sparking moments ago, had turned into an ordinary wire mesh.
The electric net had lost power!
