Survival After the Catastrophe should be considered one of the happiest moments in life. It meant that fate had granted them another chance at life, and nothing could bring more joy than that.
The deafening sound of Cannon Fire echoed all around, forcing Lin Yi and his group to cover their ears tightly. They felt as if their very insides were about to be shaken loose; the Cannon Fire was alarmingly close.
"Get out of the car! At this rate, we’ll either get bitten by a Zombie or blown apart by the Cannon Fire!" Lin Yi shouted, but it seemed futile.
Everyone was not foolish; seeing Lin Yi take action, they followed suit. The nearby Zombies had been halted by the artillery fire, so there was no need to worry about them rushing over.
The rain outside continued to pour heavily, but that was of little concern. Survival was paramount, and with the Government Forces right in front of them, they needed to cling tightly to this lifeline.
Due to the curtain of rain obscuring their vision, it took nearly a minute for them to grasp the situation ahead. They truly wondered how Reagan had determined that these were indeed the Government Forces.
Before them stood rows of Leopard 4 tanks, neatly arranged in two lines with over twenty vehicles. Each Leopard 4 was a moving Steel Fortress, weighing nearly seventy tons and as solid as a mountain, nearly impossible to budge. Yet, this immense weight did not hinder its speed; the massive chassis allowed for dual U engines to be installed. The powerful propulsion system enabled the Leopard 4 tank to move as swiftly as a cheetah, no longer an easy target for enemies to strike at will. The development of the Leopard 4 was aimed at countering increasingly powerful armed factions whose firepower could penetrate ordinary tanks. The Leopard 4's rapid mobility combined with its thick armor became a nightmare for them. The ultra-wide tracks were designed to minimize damage to the terrain.
Seeing so many steel beasts calmed Lin Yi and his companions significantly. Their days of wandering and hardship were about to end; they would soon return to a warm world.
"Raise your hands!" Just as they approached the tanks excitedly, a squad of soldiers suddenly rushed out with their guns aimed at Lin Yi and his group.
"I am Mayor Reagan of Dande. We were driven here by Zombies!" Reagan quickly explained, not wanting to be turned into a sieve by these soldiers.
However, the soldiers showed no mercy and quickly surrounded them with dozens of men. Lin Yi felt quite displeased; it seemed like chaos was about to erupt. After all they had endured escaping from the jaws of Zombies, now they were being threatened by their own kind.
"Everyone, given the circumstances, please surrender your weapons first before we can allow you inside," an officer stepped forward, realizing that Lin Yi's group might not be easy targets.
In truth, while surrendering their weapons was acceptable, it was infuriating that this had already happened twice in less than half a month! Survival versus dignity had become a pressing issue! Without hesitation, everyone laid down their weapons; survival was still the priority.
Seeing that this group had gone from fierce to compliant once one person led in disarming themselves, the officer quickly ordered his men to gather up the weapons from the ground.
"Hello, I’m Slo, today’s duty officer." The officer who introduced himself as Slo extended his hand towards Reagan, assuming that he was the highest-ranking individual present due to his suit.
Reagan shook Slo's hand symbolically and then pointed at Lin Yi, saying, "This is Mr. Lin Yi; he is our leader who has guided us through numerous encounters with Zombies."
Feeling slightly awkward, Slo turned towards Lin Yi, extending his hand again. "I didn’t expect you to be so unassuming; you are exactly the hero we have been searching for!"
Though Lin Yi had no intention of stepping into the spotlight, he found himself obliged to respond and managed a modest smile. "It’s nothing; I just got lucky. My teammates are all capable individuals; they are the real heroes."
Slo slapped his forehead in frustration. "Look at me; I didn’t even think to invite our guests in!" He gestured for everyone to enter with an inviting motion.
Lin Yi glanced at Wu Hao, wanting to confirm whether entering would lead to their demise. Wu Hao quickly approached and whispered to Lin Yi, "It should be fine. Everyone's situation is not good right now, and he probably sees that we still have some value and needs us."
Although he still couldn't grasp the exact situation, going inside was certainly better than being outside feeding the Zombies. Ahead of Lin Yi was a passage about five meters wide, with the city wall beside it towering around ten meters high. It was constructed from massive stones, but it seemed to have been built recently. The Leopard 4 tanks must have emerged from this city gate; after all, if these steel beasts had remained outside, they would eventually be toppled by the Zombies.
Looking up at the top of the city wall, Lin Yi could see numerous cannon barrels, each nearly two meters tall. Not only that, but there were also many fully armed soldiers patrolling. Even in this heavy rain, no one relaxed for a moment. The imminent threat of the Zombies had forced everyone to take it seriously, as perhaps the next one to be devoured would be themselves.
Gazing at the enormous fortress before him, Lin Yi finally felt the immense power of the nation for the first time. If it were just him and his companions, even with their peculiar abilities, they would eventually be reduced to nothing by the Zombies.
The distance was only a few steps, just enough for Lin Yi and his group to get a rough idea. Just as they stepped through the city gate, Leopard 4 tanks began to stream in one after another.
At this moment, Slo finally spoke up to explain to everyone, "We suddenly observed unusual movements among the Zombies and used data from an early warning satellite to discover that it was you all who caused the disturbance. At that time, it looked like you were about to be surrounded by those Zombies when we suddenly saw your vehicles charging forward as if flying. Our tank battalion had just reached outside when we noticed you had already rushed over."
Lin Yi wasn't particularly interested in these explanations; he was stunned by what lay before him.
It was nothing like the image of a city he had in mind. The area near the city wall was entirely constructed with steps for patrol personnel to move back and forth between the wall and the ground. The streets were bustling with activity; everyone was working in the rain, with various construction vehicles and even private cars transporting building materials to reinforce the walls.
"You’re trying to turn this place into an impregnable fortress!" Flower Cannon was also moved by what he saw; even though he was drenched and could barely open his eyes due to the rain, he could feel the determination of the people.
"Who wouldn't? If this place falls, we might all be doomed," Slo said as he led everyone to a sheltered area from the rain and waved over a boy around seventeen or eighteen years old.
"Sir, how can I assist you?" The boy saluted Slo.
Slo ruffled his hair and smiled, "Take these guests to the supplies department for daily necessities and then show them where they can rest."
"Yes, sir!" The boy's eyes sparkled with admiration as he stood straight with his slender frame.
Slo then turned apologetically to Lin Yi and his group. "I'm sorry; I have many things to attend to. I'll come back later to apologize properly."
Lin Yi waved his hand dismissively. "You go ahead; I won’t refuse any help you need." Of course, Lin Yi was just being polite; he hoped this officer would ensure their safe departure later on.
Slo nodded and left with several of his subordinates. The tall boy waved his hand in front, beckoning Lin Yi and others to follow him.
"What’s your name, brother?" Bai, who usually wore a serious expression, suddenly imitated Slo and patted the boy's head.
"Um, I don't have a specific name. But my aunt told me she saw me on July 19th years ago, so she named me Number 19." The boy's expression dimmed for a moment but quickly returned to cheerfulness.
"Can you tell me where we are, Brother Number 19?" Lin Yi asked eagerly this time.
"This place was previously known as Gold Card City, but now it is called Golden Card Fortress. Commander, Mr. President has ordered all cities to be converted into fortresses to resist this invasion of monsters." Number 19's eyes reflected fear; he must have been frightened by the sight of those Zombies.
Lin Yi nodded and then asked, "Do you know where these monsters are currently located?"
Number 19 replied, "Announcements are made here to inform everyone about the situation outside. This morning, I saw that the Southern District near Sudan and Kenya has been completely overrun by Zombies. Now, major cities are accelerating the construction of fortresses, and a large number of soldiers are working hard to eliminate these monsters."
Upon hearing this, everyone secretly felt relieved. With the national forces involved, there was still great hope for eliminating the Zombies. Even though the road ahead was fraught with difficulties, if they worked together, at least the lives of ordinary citizens could be safeguarded.
However, knowing this was not enough. They had been cut off from the outside world for some time, and they were still in the dark about what was happening out there. Lin Yi pressed on with his questions: "How do you know about the Zombies? Are there similar situations in other regions?"
For the first time, Number 19 shook his head. "The specific situation is known better by that officer over there; he can watch television."
"What? You can't watch it?" Lin Yi found it strange; there seemed to be no reason for watching television to be treated like a privilege.
"We can't. Commander, this is a special period; television viewing is restricted," Number 19 seemed troubled by this matter but could only accept the reality.
Everyone realized that many situations could only be clarified by those truly in power, so they stopped asking Number 19 further questions. They followed him to the supply department to collect essential living supplies. Afterward, they were taken to a residential building where the facilities were alarmingly rudimentary; there wasn't even a bed! However, being able to settle down and rest was what mattered most. The group tidied themselves up a bit and leaned against each other to sleep in their clothes.
After much exhaustion, they finally fell asleep, but it wasn't long before a few uninvited guests disturbed their sweet dreams.
