Watching the person she loved most about to die right before her eyes was a pain that life could not bear. Li Qiweng nearly roared like a Zombie as she sprinted toward Lin Yi, but despite being the first to notice the situation, it was still too late. Without taking the Potential Gene Drug, Li Qiweng ran at the utmost speed a human could achieve to reach Lin Yi's side.
The sword pierced through, separating the head from the body of the child who had already undergone Corpseification, and it rolled off Lin Yi's shoulder. Since the Corpseification had just occurred, the child's blood still surged vigorously, spraying across half of Lin Yi's body. A sense of dread crept into Lin Yi's heart; he felt something stirring within him, as if it were ready to take control at any moment.
Li Qiweng quickly pulled out an object from her waterproof backpack. The dim light refracted off the item in her hand, glimmering with a faint silver sheen. Perhaps having seen too many people bitten by Zombies, which was tantamount to announcing their death sentence, Lin Yi momentarily failed to comprehend what Li Qiweng was injecting into him.
"Don't be afraid, there's Serum here; you'll be fine within half an hour," Li Qiweng said as she tore off Lin Yi's outer garment, exposing his shoulder and injecting him with a needle.
Whether it was due to the drug's effect or Li Qiweng's explosive rush to save him, a warm current flowed through Lin Yi. The Serum worked well; his arm, which had felt numb from the corpse poison, quickly began to regain sensation.
However, before anyone could gather their wits, a loud crashing sound continued to echo.
"Not good! There are still many of those big monsters!" Hearing the continuous sounds, Flower Cannon's face turned pale. Dealing with such creatures that couldn't be taken down with a single shot required brute force.
"Everyone, let's head west; there's a large city over there!" Aik shouted. He estimated their location based on Lake Jowu's geography.
At this moment, everyone felt helpless. In this desolate place, unless one was very familiar with the area, it didn't matter where they went; it would all be the same. The woman and her child they had originally planned to take along were already dead; they weren't truly heartless.
Just as everyone readied their "Wolf Eye" flashlights for a quick retreat, a Giant Zombie appeared before them.
"Wen, you take them and go ahead; I'll cover the rear!" Lin Yi had already cleared the corpse poison from his system, and the effects of the Gene Drug were still active; his combat ability remained unmatched.
At this moment, Li Qiweng set aside any sentimental feelings and immediately led part of the group away. After all, she was still nominally the Vice Captain.
Ika chose to stay behind this time; she also had a dose of Potential Gene Drug in hand and could become a powerful warrior in critical moments. Pachy was tall and strong as well; he wasn't far off from matching the Giant Zombie in strength and also took on the responsibility of holding back. Douglas naturally didn't need to be told; as someone with extraordinary powers, he was a key player in this battle.
Taking advantage of the moment before being surrounded again, Li Qiweng had already led his team to retreat towards the west.
Lin Yi was quite experienced in dealing with the first Giant Zombie that arrived. This type of Zombie was powerful, but its speed was not particularly fast. When Lin Yi's potential was fully unleashed, even the previously fastest recorded human speed seemed like a joke. Moreover, Lin Yi's strength was not to be underestimated; although he had never tested it, he was confident he could lift a car.
At this moment, in order not to waste too much time and risk losing track of Li Qiweng, Lin Yi instantly jumped in front of the Zombie. The Zombie swung its palm like a fan towards Lin Yi, but to Lin Yi, its speed appeared painfully slow. He thrust his blade directly into the Zombie's massive hand, driving it all the way to the hilt. Then, with a quick twist of his wrist, he forcefully churned it dozens of times, turning most of the Zombie's arm into a mass of flesh that flew everywhere. The Zombie immediately lost a significant portion of its combat ability.
All of this happened in the blink of an eye; just as the Zombie managed to raise one arm to strike at Lin Yi, Lin Yi had already shattered its arm. It didn't even have time to react before Lin Yi closed in. The Silver Soul once again displayed its might in Lin Yi's hands as it pierced into the Giant Zombie's throat, rapidly churning the blade. The gash on the Zombie's neck widened, and before it could use its other arm to block, its neck and head were nearly severed, connected only by a thin layer of skin.
At the moment the Zombie fell to the ground, its other arm finally swung towards Lin Yi but was swiftly cut off by Ika standing nearby. Lin Yi was surprised at Ika's impressive skills and her complete lack of fear; he had always thought she was just a delicate noblewoman.
The first Zombie was perfectly killed under their combined efforts, and Pachy didn't even get a chance to intervene. However, there were more Zombies than just that one, and Lin Yi wasn't going to stick around for a prolonged fight.
"We're leaving!" With flames illuminating the scene, he could see at least ten more Giant Zombies charging from a distance. Although Lin Yi was confident that these ten Zombies were no match for him, it was best to retreat immediately to avoid unnecessary casualties.
Lin Yi accelerated instantly but only realized after running about a hundred meters that his companions were no longer with him!
At this moment, Lin Yi forgot that he had taken drugs; Ika and Pachy couldn't keep up with him at all. He had no choice but to turn back and match their speed. However, the Zombies behind them moved faster than ordinary humans and quickly caught up with Ika and Pachy.
Five Zombies rushed towards them simultaneously, causing Lin Yi to feel overwhelmed; he couldn't handle so many Zombies alone.
"Ika, you should take the Potential Gene Drug this time too; we can't all take it at once!" After saying this, Lin Yi charged towards one of the Zombies.
This time he didn't play around; he aimed directly for the Zombie's neck and swung down with his blade. As his knife fell swiftly, two more Zombies were already lunging at him. No matter how fast Lin Yi was, he still needed some time to recover from his attack.
With no other choice, Lin Yi quickly retreated. At that moment, Ika had finished taking her medicine and had temporarily transformed into a super warrior. The two exchanged glances and backed up against each other as they faced the approaching Zombies.
This time, they could cover each other's blind spots, and in an instant, they simultaneously decapitated two Zombies. The numbers were starting to even out, and Lin Yi no longer held back; he charged toward one of the remaining Zombies, swinging his blade to slay the beast.
Pachy was feeling the most frustrated at this moment. He hadn't taken the Potential Gene Drug yet, and by the time Lin Yi and Ika killed one Zombie, he had just arrived. By then, they were already engaged with two others. Not wanting to be left without any achievements, Pachy immediately swung his sword and joined the fray against one of the Zombies. It was then that he truly felt the power of the Giant Zombie; even the strongest of men would struggle against it.
Although the Zombie was incredibly strong, it relied solely on brute force. With his long knife in hand, Pachy managed to hold his ground against it. However, seeing Lin Yi slice through his opponent as if cutting tofu with ease made Pachy realize that when he struck down with his own blade, all he did was leave a few shallow cuts on the Zombie's body.
"Whoa!" Just as Pachy prepared to speed up and attack from behind the Zombie, his long knife was suddenly seized by the creature. Despite believing himself to be strong, he found that he couldn't match the Zombie's strength. He pulled desperately several times, but it felt as if his knife was embedded in the Zombie's palm and wouldn't budge.
At that moment, while one hand held onto Pachy's long knife, the Zombie reached for his neck with its other hand. Pachy had no choice but to abandon his weapon and attempt to retreat, but the Zombie wasn't about to give him that chance; almost simultaneously with Pachy's retreat, its massive hand lunged at him.
Pachy's eyes widened like saucers as he stared at the foul-smelling hand coming towards him. In a moment of desperation, he braced himself with both hands.
With a loud "thud," the Zombie's head was suddenly removed from its shoulders; Lin Yi had dispatched his opponent and seized the opportunity to ambush Pachy's attacker from behind.
Pachy kicked away the headless Zombie and let out a wry smile; he had never imagined he could feel so weak.
Seeing that Ika had also taken down her last Zombie, Lin Yi immediately said to them both, "Ika and I will support Pachy in retreat!"
The other two had no objections; after all, more Zombies were closing in behind them, and they couldn't afford to waste any more time wondering how long this would drag on.
With each of them supporting Pachy on either side, they began their frantic escape. They had already lost considerable time; ahead of them, their group was becoming less visible. If they continued to dawdle like this, they risked getting separated completely.
After taking the drug, Lin Yi and Ika felt like two superheroes, effortlessly moving even with the nearly two hundred pounds of Pachy. Although there were several miles between them and the group ahead, the three of them caught up in less than a minute.
As they approached the group, Lin Yi barely steadied himself before he was startled by the scene before him, ready to turn and flee. What was even more terrifying was that Li Qiweng and the others stood there as if nothing was wrong, completely still. In an instant, Lin Yi rushed to Li Qiweng's side and grabbed him just as he was about to run away. Li Qiweng suddenly made a "shh" gesture at him.
When did he become so calm? Lin Yi felt like he was about to lose it. There were at least twenty Giant Zombies standing right in front of them. No matter how brave he considered himself, many would surely perish in such a situation. Yet everyone seemed entranced, standing quietly without moving.
Lin Yi glanced at the Zombies and was shocked to find that they were also completely still. What was going on?
It was only then that Lin Yi noticed Jerry standing in front of the group of Zombies, softly murmuring something to them. The voice was ethereal, and he couldn't understand a word. His earlier anxiety gradually faded; there seemed to be a hypnotic power in that sound.
Under Jerry's control, the Zombies moved like puppets, heading towards the direction behind them where the tribe still burned. Over twenty Zombies marched in unison like a well-trained army towards the still-burning settlement.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yi pulled Jerry aside and asked. He distinctly remembered that these mindless Zombies were beyond Jerry's control.
"I just tried it out and found that these Giant Zombies have their own thoughts; their intelligence level is roughly comparable to that of a crocodile, which is why I can control them. However, they are harder to manage than real people. If it weren't for everyone desperately killing the Zombies that got too close to me earlier, I wouldn't have been able to do this."
Lin Yi then noticed several headless Zombies around them; it seemed many had fallen victim to Li Qiweng's handiwork. It was certainly fortunate that their team possessed such formidable power. However, with the night concealing unknown dangers, Lin Yi dared not call for everyone to rest just yet. He still had over an hour before the drug's effects wore off and he would fall into a deep sleep, but they should cover as much ground as possible while they could!
"Let’s keep going, westward!" Lin Yi waved his hand decisively and led the way forward.
