If everything could start over, no one would choose otherwise. But life has no "what ifs," only confrontations. Even in dire straits, even when hope seems lost, even in the face of fear, one must choose to fight, to embrace courage, for only then will fortune smile upon them.
The Zombies were closing in from all directions, shambling forward with a crazed hunger for flesh. Lin Yi quickly divided the group, including the woman and child, totaling twenty-two people. However, the woman’s initial ferocity had been replaced by sheer terror at the sight of the Zombies, and the child was barely two years old. As for his own Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps, Jiao Jiao, and Hai, their combat abilities were still uncertain. The rest could fight back to some extent. Nevertheless, everyone in the Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps was ready to engage, so Lin Yi split them into four teams.
Lin Yi led one team while the others were organized based on their combat strength. Team Two was headed by Witerson II, ensuring that Ika was included. With limited Gene Drugs, only the four of them knew how to use them in dire situations. Team Three was led by Bai, who was skilled with firearms, and Li Qiweng joined this group. The reason Li Qiweng wasn’t leading was due to Lin Yi’s personal bias; he didn’t want her on the front lines. Team Four consisted of Pachy, whose bravery was well recognized by everyone.
Once the main structure was established, everyone took their positions and prepared for battle.
The Zombies had no semblance of formation; they approached in waves without fear.
“Kill!” Lin Yi shouted as he charged forward. He had secretly taken a dose of the Potential Gene Drug. His current combat ability was too low; even Jiao Jiao or Hai could likely overpower him.
In an instant, Lin Yi transformed into a fierce warrior, reminiscent of his earlier display of power at the airport. He moved with such speed that it seemed he vanished from sight, swiftly decapitating the first Zombie. The creature stumbled forward a few steps before collapsing. So rapid was Lin Yi that by the time others raised their guns to aim, he had already dispatched several more Zombies. Jiao Jiao, assigned to his team, held her gun but hesitated to fire for fear of hitting him.
Fully immersed in the slaughter, Lin Yi felt a thrill of bloodlust surge within him. Five Zombies surrounded him, waving their decayed hands as if trying to intimidate him with their gaping black mouths. Did he feel fear? Of course not. At that moment, his agility reached new heights; while most would struggle against five simultaneous attackers, he executed a swift half-bow maneuver and knelt down. With a flick of his wrist, “Silver Soul” carved a circle around him. The sharp edge of “Silver Soul” sliced through the thighs of all five Zombies, as effortlessly as cutting through tofu.
With one decisive strike severing their legs, before they could fully collapse, Lin Yi sprang into action and leaped behind them. The legless Zombies, though still crawling, became easy targets for Jiao Jiao and the others.
Though surrounded by Zombies, this small group possessed enough combat prowess to wipe out an entire squadron. Facing these disorganized creatures—driven solely by their viral instincts—everyone fought without hesitation. At that moment, Witerson II emerged as the most brutal hunter; since the Zombies moved slowly, he methodically shot each one in the head with precision. Fortunately, around him were allies like Tony, who fought fiercely to fend off other attacking Zombies. Otherwise, such reckless tactics would eventually lead to trouble.
Team One led by Lin Yi made significant progress; he moved like a meat grinder through the horde. Wherever he passed, the Zombies fell—either decapitated or limbless. Following closely behind were Jiao Jiao and others firing point-blank with noticeable effectiveness. So rapid was his killing spree that he even found time to observe his teammates' conditions. What surprised him most wasn’t Jiao Jiao, given her fiery temperament and proficiency with firearms; it was Hai—the usually soft-spoken girl who walked as if afraid of stepping on ants—who displayed unexpected bravery now. Instead of targeting the half-destroyed Zombies, she focused on those attempting to disrupt their formation with precise shooting and a calm demeanor that belied her age.
Other teams performed admirably as well; Li Qiweng’s skills were undeniable—even among such skilled individuals as those present in Team Three, she ranked highly. She didn’t need any drugs to enhance her abilities; she led her team directly into battle alongside Douglas, while three others dealt with incoming threats from other directions. Years of training allowed her to dispatch each Zombie with lethal efficiency—one strike per kill. Meanwhile, Douglas found it easy enough; all he needed to do was focus and toss each defeated creature into a fire pit.
Armed with a nearly meter-long blade resembling a machete, towering over others was Pachy. With each swing powered by his immense strength, severed heads flew through the air—ensuring they were dead beyond recovery. However, his team faced unfortunate consequences; dark liquid sprayed from decapitated necks often splattered onto them. Originally assigned to this team was Jerry, but his mental manipulation abilities proved ineffective against these mindless creatures—they acted purely on instinct.
As an ability user, all that remained for Jerry now was to shoot these undead beings like an ordinary person. Similarly frustrated was Wu Hao, who struggled even more than Jerry. He stood off to one side waving his arms but remained vigilant against any approaching threats.
The lack of sufficient flesh meant that the Zombies moved sluggishly—barely matching a child's fighting capability. Occasionally a particularly aggressive one would emerge but would be swiftly dealt with by teams like that of Lin Yi. What had once seemed like an overwhelming horde now dwindled significantly; alone, he had nearly eliminated a third of them without exerting himself fully. Just as the last of seven or eight hundred fell before him, barely half an hour had passed.
Perhaps due to his earlier frenzy, there was an undercurrent within him—a struggle to control his rising agitation fueled by frequent use of the gene drug. Quickly, he focused on calming himself down.
"What's wrong?" Li Qiweng walked over and patted Lin Yi on the shoulder when she saw him standing still.
"Nothing." Lin Yi trembled slightly; for some reason, in that brief moment, he felt as if he had just committed murder.
Li Qiweng's eyes flickered, seemingly pondering something, but then she opened her arms and embraced Lin Yi.
"Let's hold our wedding when we get home." As she said this, a mix of emotions swirled in her heart; whether it was sour or sweet, she herself couldn't tell.
"Sure." Lin Yi's response was still simple; it seemed he was still suppressing his bloodthirsty emotions.
"We need to leave now!" Suddenly, Lin Yi heard a loud noise coming from a distance. It was still a bit far away, and the others hadn't noticed yet.
The group quickly gathered together, and Lin Yi immediately ordered a retreat along the path they had come. However, the woman who had lost her family and home refused to leave, insisting on taking her child with her. Lin Yi tried to persuade her a few times, but due to the language barrier, she remained unyielding.
Just as Lin Yi was about to give up on the mother and child, the sounds he had been hearing suddenly stopped. His heart sank; something terrible was approaching!
"Run!" Without thinking twice, Lin Yi immediately commanded a retreat.
"Ah~" But it was too late. A scream alerted everyone that tragedy had struck.
Following the sound, Lin Yi saw a Giant Zombie appear on the left side of the group. The Giant Zombie held a body that had been torn in half, dressed in dark green military attire.
"It's Jack!" A rush of blood surged through Lin Yi's veins to his head; just moments ago, his comrade had been alive and well, only to be brutally ripped apart in an instant.
Blood sprayed everywhere, splattering on everyone present. The gruesome scene shocked them all. The immense tearing force even scattered various organs across the ground.
The culprit, that Zombie, showed no regard for the feelings of those around it as it began devouring the fallen organs with its mouth. Occasionally, it smacked its lips as if boasting to its companions about its feast—a grotesque banquet made from human flesh and blood.
Lin Yi was furious; Captain Lin Yi was enraged!
"I'll kill you, you bastard!" Lin Yi shouted through gritted teeth as he charged toward the Zombie. He couldn't accept that someone who had quietly served everyone while still smiling had met such a tragic end. He couldn't tolerate the Zombie's display of glee; he could see that it was reveling in its meal. This was unacceptable—very unsatisfactory—so Lin Yi felt he had to kill it!
Just as the Zombie opened its mouth to receive the first internal organ that slipped from the corpse, before it could even swallow, Lin Yi had already charged right up to it. With a swift motion, he struck down, but this time Lin Yi was not so fortunate; the Zombie used half of its own body to block Lin Yi's initial strike. However, Lin Yi's reaction was incredibly quick. Just as the Zombie's other hand reached out to grab him, Lin Yi barely needed any extra force. He dodged to the back of the Zombie and leaped up, directly severing the head of the enraging creature. It was only at that moment, when the Zombie's head fell, that its hand swung at the spot where Lin Yi had just stood.
The story was not over yet; tragedy was still unfolding. Amidst the loud crash of the Zombie hitting the ground, a cry echoed through the air.
What people saw first was a headless corpse being held by a Giant Zombie towering over two meters tall. Yes, it was that unwilling woman; her head had been bitten off by the Giant Zombie.
Arterial blood gushed out violently as the newly arrived Zombie reveled in the warm blood showering over its face.
Lin Yi could not afford to think about anything else. He stepped onto Witerson II's shoulder and leaped over. The Zombie, still lost in its moment of triumph, soon found its own head rolling away as well. It seemed that the woman's hair had gotten stuck in its esophagus and had not been swallowed down.
"Ha!" Lin Yi exhaled lightly, feeling a significant reduction in his inner fury.
"Heart!" Li Qiweng suddenly shouted as he ran towards Lin Yi.
At that moment, Lin Yi felt a sharp pain in his arm and saw a small body clinging to it, biting him! It was the woman’s child, who had somehow turned into a Corpse long before he realized it!
I’ve been infected with zombie poison; what should I do? Lin Yi's mind was in chaos. Was he really going to die like this?
