Sadness can ferment, but it cannot last forever; there must come a moment to pause. Those who are alive must continue on their own path until the end.
After comforting Jones, who was immersed in sorrow, Lin Yi knew it was time to start planning for the future. Fortunately, they were no longer completely isolated from the outside world and could still catch glimpses of the latest news. The most pressing matter now was to figure out where they were and where the road ahead would lead.
Luckily, there was a local named Jones nearby. Although she was not in good spirits, there were still questions that needed to be asked. With Li Qiweng and Aoling Er by his side, Lin Yi felt relieved and gestured for them to take charge of this task.
“Jones, can you tell me about any safe places you know?” Li Qiweng quickly grasped Lin Yi's intention and asked. She understood that her father had many responsibilities at the moment, and as his daughter, she didn’t want to add to his troubles. They were not yet in a life-or-death situation; she could still strive for survival on her own.
“I came from Longonot, and when I left, it was still safe there. However, I’ve heard that zombies are rampant in the capital now. The Government Forces have been hunting down those zombies everywhere, but I don’t know what the situation is like now. It seems we should be able to reach Nakuru soon; we’ll only know the specifics once we get there.”
Jones briefly summarized what she knew, but it wasn’t particularly useful. The information was outdated, and the current state of the zombies remained unclear.
Fortunately, Reiko then asked a crucial question: “Can you contact your classmates? They might have some information!”
“Yeah.” Jones nodded and went to log into her communication account on the computer. She had lost her communicator while escaping from Nairobi and hadn’t managed to buy a new one yet.
As everyone watched Jones’s face slowly shift from anticipation to pallor, eventually losing all hope in her eyes, they sensed that something was amiss.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Yi felt compelled to inquire further.
Jones seemed to be calming herself down; after swallowing hard, she spoke softly, “All my university classmates are offline. None of them have replied to my messages; they might…” Her voice trailed off as it grew increasingly somber. Having just experienced her father's death, it seemed her long-time friends were also facing an irreversible crisis.
Lin Yi furrowed his brow. They had planned to move forward, but now it seemed that ahead lay a horde of zombies—a path leading straight to doom. He had always wanted to find a way out of this perilous place, but now it seemed impossible to find an escape route.
“Captain, we’ve arrived at Nakuru!” Akin was still driving and naturally reported on the situation ahead.
“What’s it like up ahead?” Upon hearing they were nearing a larger area, Lin Yi quickly asked; he needed to devise a strategy for what came next.
Akin appeared to be observing ahead and fell silent for a moment. Though brief, the silence filled the vehicle with an inexplicable fear. They had been driving for nearly two hours without seeing anyone. At times, they even wondered if they had left Earth altogether and were instead traversing desolate Mars.
“Report, boss: it’s chaotic up ahead; I haven’t spotted anyone yet.” Akin finally spoke up; it seemed he genuinely hoped to find someone but was disappointed in his search.
Lin Yi sensed that the situation was dire. If a city was completely deserted, it could only be described as a ghost town.
"Everyone, get out of the vehicle and prepare to assess the situation," Lin Yi immediately decided. They would first check the surroundings before determining whether to change their route. If possible, he also wanted to find a place for everyone to rest; neither of them had had a proper break. If they encountered a large horde of zombies later, they might not even have the strength to escape.
The group cooperatively exited the vehicle. Although Lin Yi had not often demonstrated his abilities, those around him seemed formidable, and the others who were unaware of the circumstances naturally wouldn't dare oppose him.
The roadway was chaotic, littered with abandoned cars. The walls were blackened from fire, with some areas still burning. Bloodstains and the occasional severed limb told them of the brutal massacre that had taken place here.
Lin Yi raised his weapon, ready to respond to any emergencies. However, the atmosphere was too eerie; the vast city lay in ruins, enveloped in an eerie silence.
"Wen, you should stay here with Reiko and the others while we check things out," Li Qiweng said. Although she was much more skilled than Lin Yi—ranking among the top three in their group—she still felt uneasy about letting him venture alone.
"What, are you worried about me?" Li Qiweng understood Lin Yi's concerns but was equally reluctant to let him take risks by himself.
Lin Yi scratched the back of his head and chuckled lightly. "Vice Captain, Base Camp is important too; you need to protect our retreat!"
Li Qiweng huffed softly and chose not to respond further.
This time, Lin Yi called ten people to accompany him, and Pachy naturally joined as well. Wu Hao, usually quiet, volunteered at this moment; as a man, he couldn't always hide behind women. His comment nearly earned him a punch from the hot-tempered Jiao Jiao—he clearly underestimated his female companions.
Fortunately, everyone understood that this was not a time for foolishness. After Lin Yi confirmed their formation, the group of ten set off. They arranged themselves in a defensive formation as they advanced cautiously but opted for a light jog to save time. Lin Yi's stamina couldn't quite keep up with the professional soldiers and mercenaries since he hadn't taken any performance-enhancing drugs, but he gritted his teeth and stayed close to the main group for the sake of his position as captain.
Due to the damaged vehicles and debris scattered across the road, their progress was not smooth. Luckily, urban areas typically had better infrastructure; after about half an hour, they found a decent hotel. After checking around, they discovered there were no zombies nearby. The facilities inside were well-maintained and almost undamaged, suggesting that the residents had received advance warning and left without panic during the sudden zombie outbreak.
"Alright, let's head back!" Lin Yi thought about finally having a place to rest and felt his spirits lift. For someone like him who enjoyed life’s comforts, this situation had been nothing short of a nightmare.
The return journey took just over ten minutes. Li Qiweng and the others were waiting by their vehicle when they arrived, indicating that they hadn’t encountered any danger. Although zombies were everywhere now, it was fortunate they hadn’t run into any during their outing. Upon reaching everyone, Lin Yi announced that they could finally take a break and replenish their energy, prompting cheers from all around.
"Ah~" Just as the cheers subsided, a chilling scream suddenly pierced through the air, reaching everyone's ears.
"All units on alert!" Lin Yi's nerves began to tense up again.
Everyone turned toward the source of the commotion and saw a person frantically running toward them along the path they had just returned from.
Trailing closely behind that person were a dozen Zombies, all moving quickly. It seemed they had just feasted on fresh flesh, making them agile.
The newcomer was still a bit away from Lin Yi, but the group of Zombies was already very close.
"Quick, save him!" Lin Yi was the first to run. In his view, if there was a chance to help, they couldn't just pretend not to see.
The others almost simultaneously raised their guns and rushed toward the group of Zombies, but they were afraid that firing randomly might hit the person in front. Only those who considered themselves excellent marksmen, Flower Cannon and Bai Zai, occasionally fired their weapons. However, due to the distance, their efforts were not very effective.
Distant water cannot quench immediate thirst; perhaps the newcomer was exhausted. The Zombies had already closed in when he suddenly fell to the ground. The once short distance became an opportunity for the excited Zombies to pounce. At this moment, even if Lin Yi immediately took the Potential Gene Drug to rescue him, it would be too late.
The ten people who had been running either stopped in their tracks or raised their guns to shoot, hoping to help in some way.
Just then, the fallen person suddenly shouted out loud and ended with a roar: "Get away!"
An unbelievable scene unfolded.
The Zombies that had lunged at him suddenly seemed to have been struck by an immense force, their bodies flying as if weightless. The Zombies following behind were also knocked aside by those flying forward, with several crashing into nearby buildings and falling apart.
Lin Yi stared in shock at this scene, while Wu Hao beside him looked at the distant figure with shining eyes.
"Hurry, save him! He must be a treasure!" Wu Hao seemed even more anxious than Lin Yi, as if he had discovered a mountain of gold ahead and couldn't contain his excitement.
At this moment, everyone cast aside their reservations; after all, they had seen monstrous Giant Zombies before—what other strange occurrences could they not accept?
A few people rushed over as fast as they could. Many of the Zombies had already been smashed to bits, their brains splattered everywhere—dead beyond recovery. A few remaining Zombies attempted to rise again but were swiftly dispatched by Lin Yi and his group with headshots.
Lin Yi walked over to the young boy who was sitting on the ground, paralyzed with fear.
"You are safe now," Lin Yi said with a warm smile as he reached out to help the boy up.
"Go away," the boy weakly shouted.
At that moment, Lin Yi suddenly felt an invisible force pushing him back. He stumbled a few steps in response to the boy's command.
"Don't be afraid, we are friends of Jones. We are here to rescue you," Wu Hao's voice suddenly took on a magnetic tone as he addressed the frightened boy.
"Jones?" Lin Yi was taken aback. Did they know each other?
Sure enough, after Wu Hao mentioned Jones, the boy, who had looked like a ghost moments before, regained some color. He instinctively reached out his hand, allowing Wu Hao to pull him up.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yi wondered, still unsure of the situation.
"He has an ability like mine, something beyond what ordinary people possess. It seems to be a mental type as well, but he just doesn't know how to use it yet," Wu Hao explained simply.
Ability User? Lin Yi was shocked; this world was truly more complicated than he had imagined.
