As dusk approached, two cars drove along the sandy highway, seemingly weary. They struggled to move in a single direction, perhaps toward a dead end. Yet they pressed on; it was their mission, and giving up was never an option. 0

The two military vehicles provided by Froeman performed well, equipped with military computers capable of connecting to satellite signals. It seemed that Lin Yi, who had felt disconnected from the world for so long, could finally receive news from outside. He had always thought he was the only one suffering, fighting alone. But now, through the news, he learned that they were not the only ones resisting the omnipresent zombies. Incidents of zombies attacking people had emerged across America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. Governments worldwide were striving to eliminate the zombies and protect civilians while desperately researching medications to combat the Zombie Virus. Lion City had previously conducted relevant research and was the first to develop a serum against the Zombie Virus. However, due to the sudden outbreak, these hastily developed medications could not be mass-produced; they could only provide temporary relief without fundamentally solving the problem. 0

The disaster had struck too suddenly, as if it were premeditated and spreading across the globe. Governments were feeling overwhelmed and unable to eradicate the zombies that might be lurking in alleyways. Many governments had already called upon citizens to organize spontaneously to collectively resist this winter of despair. 0

The situation was not optimistic; this was Lin Yi's first reaction after reading all the news. The conditions in Lion City were also dire; unless under special circumstances, entering Lion City was nearly impossible. The government implemented this measure out of concern that someone might spread the virus further. After Pachy arrived, he only took Lin Yi and Li Qiweng to Egypt. 0

After finishing reading the news, Lin Yi opened his private messaging account, and a flood of messages appeared like an avalanche. He patiently clicked through each one to reply; they were all concerned messages from old classmates and friends. Despite having experienced war, Lin Yi thought his heart would become colder, but when he saw these genuine expressions of care, he couldn't help but feel moved. He replied to each message individually and assured his parents that he was merely sent on a long-term assignment by the research institute. Their safety was guaranteed, and he need not worry about them. Perhaps because he left home early, Lin Yi wasn't as warm towards his parents as he was with some friends; their exchanges were simple greetings that lacked any sense of familial warmth. 0

After finally responding to everyone’s messages, Lin Yi prepared to take a break when a notification pinged from his messaging app—a cute avatar was flashing. Lin Yi frowned; who else could be trying to reach him? Yet he instinctively clicked on the animated avatar. 0

“Hi, Koala Uncle! Been busy lately?” 0

The message puzzled Lin Yi; he could only reply, “May I ask who you are?” 0

“It’s Winnie Flower! Don’t you remember me?” The other person typed quickly; she seemed like someone who spent a lot of time online. 0

Lin Yi scratched his head; he couldn’t recall who she was at that moment but replied politely, “Yes, I’ve been quite busy lately and haven’t been online for a while.” 0

“Oh? Where are you now, Koala Uncle?” 0

Seeing her throw out question after question left Lin Yi unsure whether to tell the truth or not. Just as he was about to brush her off politely, she suddenly said something surprising. 0

“Wait! Don’t tell me yet; let me look it up.” 0

“Okay… You’re in Africa.” 0

“In the east!” 0

“Alright! It’s Kenya!” 0

"Yes, in Grain Valley." 0

The other party sent a flurry of text messages, each more surprising than the last. It was astonishing how quickly they pinpointed his location. Was this person from some intelligence agency? That didn't seem likely! Lin Yi quickly reviewed their previous chat history. 0

Hua Hua? Lin Yi recalled that he had indeed chatted with this person before, but she was just a fourteen-year-old girl, and he hadn't thought much of it. Now, this girl was impressive; she could locate him in an instant. This made him, the Captain who had felt so helpless during this disaster, start to ponder. 0

"Hua Hua is so amazing!" Lin Yi decided to play along to learn more about her situation. 0

"Haha, Uncle Koala finally remembers me!" 0

"Not at all; I never forgot you," Lin Yi replied, embracing his mischievous side as he continued to engage with her. 0

"Good! We should keep in touch," she responded enthusiastically. 0

"Who are you keeping in touch with?" Li Qiweng, who had been resting with his eyes closed, suddenly approached Lin Yi and asked with a hint of annoyance. 0

"Haha, it's just a girl. She's quite impressive; she figured out my location just from chatting." 0

"You can't even let a girl go! What are you doing? Close the computer now! No flirting without my permission!" Li Qiweng pretended to threaten Lin Yi by shaking his fist. 0

Lin Yi knew that Li Qiweng wasn't genuinely angry, but he complied and shut down the computer. Although he was indeed bored, he wouldn't die from not playing on it. 0

"Captain, we've arrived at a town. We can resupply now," Akin, who was driving, suddenly shouted from the front. 0

Lin Yi was jolted awake from his daydream. Though he was reluctant to leave his slumber, he forced himself to focus. 0

"Everyone get out and rest. Stay alert," Lin Yi commanded. Although he hadn't been a Captain for long, he understood basic safety protocols; danger lurked everywhere, and a crisis could arise at any moment. 0

With the order given by the leader, everyone felt relieved. After all, bouncing around in the vehicle was uncomfortable, especially without a clear destination ahead. 0

The atmosphere among the group remained relatively calm as they stepped out of the vehicle, laughing and joking. It was only then that they became aware of the unsettling silence surrounding them. The large town seemed almost deserted; no, it felt as if there was not a single soul in sight. 0

"Everyone, stay alert!" Lin Yi said, releasing the safety on his gun, ready to strike at any moment. 0

The strangeness of the town was too pronounced; they began to feel a sense of familiarity when they spotted any signs of life. Now, in this eerie place, it felt as though a monster could leap out at them from anywhere. 0

"Five of you follow me; the rest stay near the vehicle and be ready to assist." 0

Li Qiweng was naturally the first to approach Lin Yi, but Lin Yi quickly found an excuse to send him away. He then gathered Witerson II, Bai, Flower Cannon, Gal, and Tony to head toward the center of the town. 0

The six of them formed a formation: two in front and four on either side, cautiously making their way toward the town's center. Aside from their footsteps, only the occasional gust of wind could be heard. It seemed that apart from them, there were truly no living beings left in this town—had everyone turned into zombies? 0

"Wait, did you hear something?" Bai suddenly looked around, as if he had noticed something. 0

Upon hearing Bai's prompt, everyone tried to calm themselves down to better observe their surroundings. 0

"It sounds like a roar!" Flower Cannon listened intently and seemed to recognize a familiar sound. 0

"Yes, it seems to be nearby. Let's check it out," Lin Yi said. He too had heard it, but the sound made him uneasy—so uneasy that he wanted to turn around and leave immediately. However, if he kept running away from every situation, he might soon find himself abandoned by his teammates. He steeled himself; this was Lin Yi's only thought at that moment. 0

Following the source of the sound, the six of them moved forward step by step. The town was not large; only a few shabby houses lined either side of a single commercial street. At the end of the street appeared to be a square-like area where the sound originated. 0

They all knew what they were likely to encounter but felt compelled to investigate; after all, retreating would not solve anything. The street wasn't very long, so they quickened their pace. Just then, they suddenly spotted a figure darting across ahead of them at high speed, seemingly in a hurry. 0

"Stop!" Although Lin Yi couldn't see clearly who it was, he could tell it was a person and not a zombie. 0

However, the figure didn’t heed Lin Yi’s call and instead ran even faster. By the time Lin Yi and the others chased after it, the person had already vanished. At that moment, the roaring grew even clearer. 0

In the center of the square stood a stone pillar about half a meter in diameter, intricately carved with various designs and symbols. Atop this pillar was a chained zombie whose mouth was still dripping with blood as if it had just fed; it faced them and let out an angry roar. 0

A few people exchanged glances, simultaneously raising their guns to prepare to shoot the Zombie. The creature, which should have shown no fear, suddenly roared even more fiercely, struggling as if it was ready to break free from the chains binding it. 0

“Bang!” It was a crisp sound, but not a gunshot. The Zombie suddenly snapped the steel chains and charged toward Lin Yi and the others like a flying person. 0

“Quick, shoot!” Lin Yi no longer hesitated and fired first. Of course, everyone knew his marksmanship was only impressive in posture. 0

A series of bullets shot toward the running Zombie. It wasn't an Iron Warrior, so although it wasn't shot in the head directly, the bullets hitting its body still had a significant impact. 0

“No, please don’t kill him! He’s still alive!” Just as everyone was working together to take down the Zombie, a heart-wrenching scream suddenly came from behind them. 0

Lin Yi turned around to see a beautiful woman, though she looked haggard. However, not everyone was as easily disturbed as Lin Yi. Under the barrage of six guns, the Zombie was quickly shot in the head and lost its legs, collapsing to the ground in defeat. 0

“Why kill him? Why? Why not save him?” The beautiful woman suddenly lunged at Lin Yi, pounding on him. But perhaps due to her exhaustion from lack of rest, her strength was weak; Lin Yi barely felt any pain. 0

Witerson II and Gal instinctively pulled the still-punching woman aside, waiting for Lin Yi's decision. 0

“He’s already dead; I can’t do anything. I want to save him too, but it seems I can't even save myself,” Lin Yi said, lowering his head and turning away. He was afraid of seeing tears. 0

The woman seemed to realize that the “he” she referred to could never come back—never return. She had tried her best, believing that after drinking so much blood and eating so much flesh, he could be healed. But reality told her it was impossible. She truly wanted to change this reality but felt powerless. 0
