The sky was clear and quiet. Inside the cabin, apart from the sound of the propeller spinning, everyone remained collectively silent. Although they had survived after the catastrophe, there was no overwhelming joy. Lisa, having seen her father's death, had not cried a single tear out of fear. At that moment, she curled up alone in a corner, ignoring everyone around her.
Reiko felt pity for the girl and quietly approached to comfort her. However, as soon as Reiko spoke, Lisa's tears fell like pearls from a broken string, yet she held back any sound. Reiko could only helplessly look at the others; aside from a few who glanced her way, most were preoccupied with their own tasks—cleaning their weapons or staring off into space lost in thought.
"Wen, what are your plans for the future?" Lin Yi asked, watching the scenery outside the plane change continuously, feeling a mix of emotions. The world was so vast, yet it seemed there was nowhere for him to settle.
"I want to go back, but given the current situation, I don't know if I can," Li Qiweng said softly, resting her head on Lin Yi's shoulder.
Lin Yi felt a sense of confusion wash over him as he looked around. The so-called Blood Envoy Mercenary Corps seemed to have lost its purpose at that moment. He too had no clear destination in mind.
"Hey, buddy! Where are we flying to?" Flower Cannon suddenly shouted towards the cockpit, prompting everyone to remember that they had no idea where they were headed. It seemed that the recent wave of zombies had left a significant impact on them; perhaps they had never seen so many monsters at once before. Even those with strong mental fortitude would be shaken by such a scene.
"Western Military District," came the pilot's voice through the intercom.
"Western Military District?" Witerson II frowned. The plane was heading directly to a military zone, which implied that only there could they find safety. The situation had deteriorated beyond his imagination; perhaps it wasn't just Mombasa facing such problems.
"Witerson II, is there a problem?" Lin Yi asked, raising his head. Although the future seemed bleak, he knew he couldn't give up. Life could be absurd at times, but as long as one was alive, they should strive to make it worthwhile.
Witerson II shifted his position and sat directly across from Lin Yi for easier conversation.
"Captain, you know how important a military district is to a country; it's not something you can just waltz into. Now that we're heading straight there, it seems that's the only place that can guarantee our safety; everywhere else is likely very dangerous," Witerson II continued to address Lin Yi as Captain, showing his steadfastness in this belief.
"I thought they might take us to the military district just to eliminate us!" Lin Yi chuckled awkwardly; he himself found it unlikely since it wouldn't make sense for them to go through such trouble to save them.
"I can't shake the feeling that there's some kind of conspiracy here. They really have no reason to go through all this trouble for just a few of us," Wu Hao finally spoke up after being silent for a while, observing those around him.
Everyone shared this sentiment; no matter how one looked at it, there was no explanation for why they would go to such lengths to rescue them. Was it truly an expression of international humanitarian spirit? That seemed unlikely given the scale of military resources deployed—such actions were significant for any nation. Moreover, their group didn't seem to have enough connection with this country to warrant such efforts.
"Regardless of any conspiracy or scheme, we're currently on someone else's turf; we should behave ourselves but not let ourselves be completely at their mercy," Lin Yi said calmly. He had always been adaptable and didn't overly concern himself with things that hadn't happened yet.
Since Captain had spoken up, everyone stopped hesitating; after all, they all recognized his authority. Moreover, several others from Captain's country seemed equally skilled. With that in mind, there was no need for excessive worry; if worse came to worst, they would fight back rather than die without dignity.
Time passed without anyone noticing until the helicopter began its slow descent. Lin Yi looked out at the bustling scene below; massive steel beasts came into view and he even doubted whether he was still at Mombasa's military aircraft field.
"Where is this place?" Lin Yi instinctively asked Consciousness.
"All I know is that it's a military base in the Western Province. I've never been here before, so I can't tell you exactly where it is. But according to the usual practice, it should be in some city." Witerson II, as a member of the Kenya military, had some understanding of the basic situation. Of course, he didn't know much; many secrets were still kept from him.
After everyone disembarked from the plane, Froeman, whom they had just met not long ago, approached them. At this moment, he did not look as cheerful as when they first met; instead, his face was filled with worry.
"Everyone, I'm very sorry for putting you in such a dangerous situation," Froeman said apologetically, his dark face showing no hint of insincerity.
"General, we have already caused you a lot of trouble. I wonder when we will be able to return home," Li Qiweng politely asked a question that everyone was eager to know.
"This place is very safe; there's no need to rush. Please take a rest for now. We have matters to discuss later tonight," Froeman gestured for Lin Yi and the others to follow him to rest.
"General, really no need to trouble yourself," Li Qiweng said, knowing that the longer they stayed, the more uncertain things could become. It was safest to return to Lion City as soon as possible.
Froeman turned to Li Qiweng and after a moment said, "Sister Li, your father has always been someone I admire. He advised me to ensure your safety, and I will certainly keep my word. I just hope you can rest well; I'm merely extending my hospitality. Tomorrow morning, whether you stay or leave, I won’t hesitate."
With the host being so accommodating, Li Qiweng felt it was inappropriate to question further. After glancing at Lin Yi, she whispered, "Then we will trouble the general once more."
Froeman merely grunted in response and waved for his aide-de-camp to come over, giving him a few instructions.
"Everyone, my aide will arrange your accommodations," he said.
Although Lin Yi felt like they were being led by the nose and caught in some kind of conspiracy, at this moment, there was nothing to do but comply or pretend to comply.
Just as everyone was preparing to leave together, Froeman suddenly pointed at Witerson II and said, "You come with me; I have some questions for you."
Witerson II was taken aback and glanced at Lin Yi. After seeing Lin Yi nod lightly in agreement, he walked over to Froeman's side. Although Witerson II had already recognized Lin Yi as the Captain, he was first and foremost a soldier of Kenya. Even though he and his unit had been abandoned in the Death Zone like pawns, it didn’t fill him with resentment towards his country.
Lin Yi and his group followed Froeman's aide-de-camp to the barracks in silence.
The barracks were relatively clean; however, during these special times, there was no distinction made between male and female accommodations. The barracks contained a row of bunk beds that could sleep twenty people comfortably.
With nothing else to do, everyone sat together chatting casually as if the recent zombie wave had been nothing but a dream. Before long, Witerson II walked back into the barracks with an expression of helplessness.
"Witerson II, you're back," Lin Yi greeted him casually, though he knew things were not as easygoing as his expression suggested.
"Yes, Captain," Witerson II replied casually before sitting down on one side alone.
"He is going to leave us." Wu Hao walked over to Lin Yi's side and spoke.
Although Wu Hao's voice was soft, everyone still heard him. Witerson II heard it too, but he didn't care why Wu Hao knew; he looked up at Lin Yi and said, "Yes, Captain, General Floman promised me to rebuild Witerson Combat Camp, and in the future, this combat camp will be expanded."
"What do you think?" Although Lin Yi had only spent a short time with Witerson II, he admired this brave and straightforward man. Now it depended on Witerson II whether he wanted to leave or continue following his Captain.
"I don't know. They abandoned us so decisively when we were in need; now that they need us, they want to help me rebuild Witerson Combat Camp." Witerson II wasn't foolish; he understood that it was because Froeman needed him that they were offering help. However, the feeling of despair from being abandoned was still vivid in his mind, and he couldn't get over that hurdle within himself.
"When will you make your final decision?" Gal asked Witerson II. As a police officer of this country, he actually no longer needed to follow Lin Yi.
"Tomorrow morning. The general has already arranged it; Captain, they can follow a team to support the troops leaving for the capital of Western Province." Witerson II looked at everyone and continued, "With his strength, that's all he can do. The situation outside is very complicated, and the required manpower is too much."
"So General Floman saved us just for Witerson II? After all that effort, in the end, they still want to drive us away." Bai Zai remarked coldly. He was now on someone else's territory; regardless of what the other party thought—whether they agreed or not—it ultimately depended on their intentions.
Whether the other party was playing a conspiracy or an open scheme, with enough strength backing them up, even if they knew there was a trap ahead, they had to move forward. The feeling of being at the mercy of others was indeed unpleasant, but there was nothing they could do about it.
Lin Yi felt uneasy as well; in Froeman's eyes, he probably seemed like a useless burden that should be discarded as soon as possible. Looking at Wen beside him, Lin Yi gently wrapped his arm around her slender waist and said, "We should think about how to return safely as soon as possible; this place is unreliable. We are just people whom Froeman saved along with Witerson II; we can't rely on him."
Li Qiweng nodded lightly and softly replied, "I will follow your lead."
