The room in the Ming Hall felt dim and oppressive due to the gathering of numerous people, with almost everyone holding a cigarette. Some were continuously taking puffs, while others stood still, clutching their smokes.
Suddenly, a sigh came from near the window. The smokers and the dazed individuals all turned to look in that direction, and the room grew increasingly quiet. The people inside could even faintly hear the sound of ash falling to the ground.
"Five hundred thousand citizens, just like that abandoned by you. Can you live with yourselves wearing those medals?" A deep, sorrowful voice slowly broke the brief silence.
"Mr. President, General Hill is doing his best to defend us; he even sacrificed our finest Witerson Combat Camp, but..." A thin old man put down his cigar and walked over to the middle-aged man he referred to as President.
"But all I see are you people still alive, while how many of those five hundred thousand citizens escaped? Weren't you supposed to resist until the end?" The middle-aged man looked at the thin old man's Lieutenant General insignia with a sarcastic smile.
"Mr. President, I am willing to take responsibility!" The man known as General Hill silently stepped forward, towering over the President even with his head bowed.
The President raised his head, ready to say something when suddenly a voice called out from the doorway, "Report!" After receiving the President's acknowledgment, the reporting officer said, "The Ministry of National Defense has an urgent telegram!"
After Lin Yi and his group rescued Roger and his daughter Lisa, they decided to take them along in search of an exit. Naturally, all the food from Roger's shop was generously offered to the seemingly hungry Captain.
Gal was a local who had lived here for over forty years. The damage caused by zombies in the city wasn't too severe, so under his guidance, they quickly found a dark passage behind a dilapidated inn. Lin Yi volunteered to lift the heavy iron cover blocking the entrance; however, whether it was due to the weight of the cover or Lin Yi's lack of strength, this seemingly superhuman figure struggled to move it even an inch. It was only with Li Qiweng's help that they finally managed to lift it. While no one was paying attention, Li Qiweng gently pinched Lin Yi's arm and said, "I told you to exercise more; look at how embarrassing this is." Although Lin Yi wanted to retort about his grievances, he could only hold back in light of reality.
Once the cover was removed, a strong musty odor wafted out, causing everyone to quickly cover their noses.
"Is there still a way out down there?" Flower Cannon was the first to jump up, waving her long arms around her nose to alleviate the stench.
"This route has been sealed for many years. Initially, it would have cost a lot to completely block it off; they just sealed the entrance and left it," Gal frowned, realizing that the situation was not optimistic.
"I remember there are some gas masks in the vehicle," Medic Ike raised his hand like a student seeking attention.
"Then Aik and Danny, you two go get those gas masks," Witerson II waved at Aik and Danny standing before him.
"Wait!" Wu Hao suddenly called out to stop the two who were about to leave. Everyone turned in surprise to look at him.
"This, the vehicle can't go with us any longer. Let's divide the firearms, ammunition, food, and water. Each person can carry a bit," Wu Hao suggested.
Lin Yi nodded in agreement and called everyone to start organizing their backpacks. They had quite a few military backpacks, along with several from Roger's store meant for carrying food, totaling fifteen backpacks. With nineteen people in the group, nearly everyone had one. Roger couldn't carry one since he had to hold his daughter, and both Lin Yi and Witerson II were free from carrying any weight. However, there were only five gas masks available, just enough for the five women. The others fashioned temporary masks from torn pieces of clothing soaked in mineral water.
The group quickly packed up as the sun rose higher in the sky.
"It's getting late; we should hurry!" Gal took the lead, followed by the others. This was Lin Yi's first time seriously trying to give orders as a leader.
No one hesitated; Gal was the first to climb into the cave entrance. Since it was small, only one person could pass through at a time, which slowed their progress.
Watching his team enter one by one filled Lin Yi with pride. Just then, Li Qiweng suddenly tugged at him.
"What’s wrong?" Lin Yi asked.
"Something is coming!" Li Qiweng furrowed her brows and drew her blade from behind her back. At that moment, Bai also reacted, raising his gun toward the source of the sound.
Lin Yi's heart raced as he shouted to those still in line, "Everyone hurry up! Something's not right!" As Captain, he couldn't let others go ahead of him; even if he was scared, he had to hold on until the last moment.
Fortunately, Li Qiweng was right beside him; her presence gave him a sense of security. It felt absurd but was undeniably real.
"Roar!" A piercing roar echoed from inside the dilapidated inn, and soon a horde of zombies staggered toward them. When they spotted their "food," their excitement surged. Bodies that seemed ready to collapse suddenly became much more agile.
As a warrior—at least that's how Li Qiweng saw herself—she charged forward without hesitation. With swift strikes, two decaying heads rolled onto the ground. Although her technique wasn't as fast as Lin Yi's when he was under the influence of drugs, it was enough to astonish everyone around.
"I didn't expect the Captain's wife to be not only beautiful but also so fierce. I wonder if our Captain can handle her," Mechanic Tony remarked to Akin, the driver beside him.
At that moment, Lin Yi was focused on the battlefield and didn't notice his subordinates discussing him. Zombies continued to pour in relentlessly; despite everyone's efforts to fight them off, their limited numbers meant they could only maintain a basic standoff.
“ Witerson II, come here!” Lin Yi called out to Witerson II, who was directing the retreat nearby.
“Captain, what’s the situation?” Witerson II saluted habitually, then fixed his gaze on Lin Yi.
“Hmm, how many people have left?” Lin Yi was focused on the battlefield and didn’t pay attention to what was happening behind him.
“Report, Captain, Gal has led four ladies to the underground passage.” Due to the sudden zombie attack, only those who had just followed Gal down were currently in the underground passage.
“Good. The rest should retreat in groups of five!” Lin Yi knew that if they continued to fight these zombies, they would end up being devoured without a trace, with no chance of even becoming a zombie themselves.
Witerson II quickly pointed out a few people, including his original three subordinates: Flower Cannon and Roger.
“No, sir, I can stay and help you!” Roger had just been assigned to a military rifle and was desperately shooting at the zombies' heads.
Witerson II didn’t think too much; since the other party was willing to stay, he naturally didn’t mind giving others a better chance at survival. The five people who were called knew that life and death were at stake and quickly descended into the passage one after another. As soon as five people left, the zombies that had been somewhat distant suddenly closed in. Although there was danger of them charging forward, it was crucial to maintain control of the situation now. Lin Yi signaled Li Qiweng to retreat with the second group of five. He understood that he was still weak but couldn’t let his wife cover for him.
Lin Yi’s expression was calm, without a hint of fluctuation. Li Qiweng glanced at him and nodded before withdrawing from combat. When she reached Lin Yi's side, she casually handed him a knife.
“This is the Silver Soul knife; it’s a pair, don’t lose it!” Li Qiweng said softly.
“Don’t worry, as long as I’m alive…”
Before he could finish his reassuring words, Lin Yi was silenced by a fragrant kiss.
“I’ll see you later!” Li Qiweng winked and smiled lightly.
Still savoring the lingering scent from Li Qiweng’s lips, Lin Yi was jolted back to reality by the ruthless roar of zombies and had no choice but to draw his knife and raise his gun to join the fight. At this moment, only he, Witerson II, and Bai were left on the scene. The tension escalated dramatically as the zombies seemed to sense their impending departure and surged forward wildly.
“ Witerson II, throw the grenades!” Lin Yi shouted.
The situation was critical. Although they only had a few grenades left, survival was the priority, and there was no time to think about anything else.
“We need to retreat!” Witerson II said as he pulled the pins from two grenades and tossed them into the horde of zombies. Lin Yi and the others quickly dashed toward a nearby cave entrance, narrowly avoiding the shockwave from the explosion.
Before the echoes of the blast had fully dissipated, Bai was the first to rush into the cave. Lin Yi wanted to follow but felt a pang of guilt, so he pushed Witerson II toward the entrance first. Fortunately, both of them were agile enough to slip inside within a few seconds. Lin Yi didn’t hesitate any longer and jumped into the cave right after. At that moment, he could even smell the foul stench emanating from the zombies.
“Hurry! I need to blow up the entrance!” Witerson II shouted as he pulled Lin Yi along, running frantically. Behind them, they could hear the furious roars of zombies! But by then, Witerson II had already thrown a grenade at the entrance.
With a loud “Boom,” both of them felt a darkness envelop them as they realized that the entrance had collapsed. The already poor air quality in the underground passage became even worse, filled with dust. Lin Yi and Witerson II quickly pulled out dusty rags to cover their mouths and noses as they sprinted toward the other end of the tunnel, eager to escape this hellish place.
They had fallen a bit behind the others, but fortunately, the underground passage wasn’t very long. After about ten minutes, they finally saw a beam of light shining into the tunnel.
Lin Yi went last; Witerson II climbed up first and then helped Lin Yi up. However, just as they stood up and brushed off the dirt from their clothes, they heard a loud shout!
“Put your hands up! You are under arrest!”
