The angry flames filled the surroundings, and Witerson II felt his hands and shoulders growing numb. Watching his brothers desperately shooting at the Zombies, Witerson felt a sense of comfort in his heart. While most soldiers were often seen as rough men with little education, the Witerson Combat Camp, which had been passed down for two generations, had personnel of a much higher caliber.
Although the battle lasted only a little over ten minutes, casualties had already exceeded ten percent. The orders from above were to hold out until the last moment, and Witerson II understood that if they did so, it would mean becoming pawns in this defensive war. As a soldier, obeying orders was part of the job, but he truly couldn't bear to see his hundreds of brothers die like this.
The Zombies continued to swarm like locusts, and more brothers were caught and bitten until only bones remained. When he received the order from above, he had already learned that those bitten by Zombies would quickly become infected. Therefore, for his injured comrades, he could only endure immense sorrow as he killed them and severed their heads.
"Commander, Reberd has been bitten!" The voice of Medic Ike suddenly came through the earpiece.
Witerson II's heart felt as if it had been struck by a heavy object. After adjusting his emotions slightly, he said, "Do it by the book!"
Upon hearing the commander’s hoarse voice, Aik wasted no time and swiftly injected the death reagent into Reberd's body. This reagent had been urgently delivered by higher-ups just before their departure, almost enough for each person.
Reberd's consciousness quickly faded; although he didn't want to end his life like this, every person bitten by a Zombie was swiftly subdued by the enforcement officers and restrained so they could not move. Aik skillfully severed Reberd's head and placed it into a large box set aside for that purpose. Besides the soldiers who had been reduced to skeletons, the heads of other injured or deceased soldiers were also placed in this large box.
After completing his task, Aik picked up his weapon and resumed fighting. In this battle, there were no medical personnel—only the dead and the living. Aik did not know when he too would meet his end, but he understood that if he were injured, his commander would kill him just as he had killed his own brother Reberd.
Waiting was futile; after the last citizen who could escape drove away, Witerson II issued the order to retreat. Although they had shot many Zombies, several had just been bitten and would soon join the ranks of the undead. They had fought hard enough; there was no need to cruelly throw away their own lives.
After sealing the windows of the armored vehicle, Witerson Combat Camp began an orderly retreat. For this armored unit, leaving was relatively simple. Along the way, Zombies relentlessly crashed into the armored vehicle; while they caused little damage, it was still terrifying.
Lin Yi and their vehicle soon reached a point very close to the airport; however, what should have been a brightly lit area was now shrouded in darkness.
"What’s going on?" Gal looked at what should have been a bustling road but was now littered with corpses and severed limbs. Apart from the sound of their vehicle moving, there was no other noise.
A bad premonition suddenly arose in everyone's minds; the surroundings seemed dark like an endless abyss with no way out.
"My buddy didn’t take a wrong turn, did he?" Lin Yi leaned forward to ask Flower Cannon, who was driving.
"I've been following the signs all along; how could I be wrong?" Flower Cannon replied with annoyance; it was clear he felt accused of incompetence.
"No mistake; this is indeed the road to the airport," Gal said confidently as a local who knew these routes far better than these outsiders.
"We should retreat now; I don't have a good feeling about this!" Bai glanced at the blurred road under the lights and spoke in a low voice.
"I think we should go take a look. After all, we're almost there, and we need to figure out what's going on," Lin Yi said. He had a habit of digging deep into matters, often described as being stubborn. Considering the current situation was too confusing, he believed they had to see it for themselves.
"Let's go. With so many of us, even if there are Zombies, it shouldn't be a big problem," Gal said. As a police officer, he couldn't just turn back upon seeing the corpses scattered everywhere.
"These bodies are disgusting; they're all mangled like this," Flower Cannon complained while looking at the car. The ground covered in limbs was really hindering his ability to drive. Anyone with a shred of sanity wouldn't just run over the corpses.
"These don't look like they were bitten by Zombies; they seem more like they were shattered by high-caliber bullets," Bai observed the surrounding remains closely, his brow furrowing deeply. As a Mercenary, he could kill without blinking an eye, but the scene before him was indeed too brutal.
"Could it be that the airport was attacked by terrorists?" Gal's first reaction to Bai's analysis was that they were facing an armed terrorist attack.
Lin Yi frowned, feeling that this scene seemed somewhat familiar, but he couldn't quite place it and fell silent.
At that moment, everyone suddenly felt the vehicle lurch violently.
"Damn it!" Flower Cannon shouted as everyone hurriedly steadied themselves.
"Roar!" Just as they looked around to assess the situation, a deep roar suddenly echoed in their ears, making their eardrums tingle.
"What a huge monster!"
Jiao Jiao's scream alerted everyone that things were about to go south.
Following the sound, Lin Yi and the others turned to look and immediately felt their scalps tingle.
The figure before them—no, to be precise, this monster—was towering. They had encountered many Zombies and had killed quite a few, but they had never seen one this large before.
Several people were sitting on top of the off-road vehicle, which already made them feel quite high, but the monster standing before them seemed to tower over them even more.
"Is this thing even from Earth?" Bai spat angrily.
The creature before them was estimated to be over two and a half meters tall, its face smeared with dried blood that had formed crusts. They could barely make out its bushy beard, and its eyes bulged out as if they might pop at any moment. Unlike humans, its teeth gleamed like steel blades when it roared. Its arms were thick and muscular, capable of delivering a punch strong enough to kill a cow. However, this monster was almost entirely naked, covered in bullet holes, yet strangely, very little blood was flowing from its wounds.
"What are you staring at? Shoot!"
Those who lived on the edge of life and death reacted quickly; Bai only hesitated for a moment before realizing that this hulking figure was not there for a friendly chat.
Fortunately, their nerves were already on high alert, and firing their weapons felt like second nature. Although they had no idea where this monster had come from, they knew it was not something to be trifled with.
The three of them fired their guns with all their might, bullets flying towards the creature as if they were free. Lin Yi was using Aoling Er's gun; after all, wielding a knife wouldn’t accomplish much in a long-range fight.
Typically, zombies would continue advancing even when shot at until they fell from a headshot. But this massive creature—or mutated zombie—actually seemed to understand how to shield its head with its enormous hands that resembled giant fans. This mutated zombie appeared to possess some intelligence; most importantly, its hands seemed to be made of something other than flesh, able to withstand the bullets.
"This guy seems pretty tough!" Gal said as he watched the bullets in his hand dwindle, his hope slowly turning into despair.
"No way! Flower Cannon, you need to drive straight at it!"
If brute force wouldn't solve the problem, they had to think of another way. If they couldn't provoke it, could they at least evade it?
Flower Cannon muttered a phrase under his breath and suddenly reversed the vehicle several dozen meters. Then he slammed the accelerator down low and charged straight at the hulking figure. Just as the vehicle was about to collide with the creature, it swerved sharply to the side and narrowly missed it.
Before Flower Cannon could boast about his driving skills and tactical maneuvering, those on top nearly got thrown off and immediately started cursing. Though their remarks were far from friendly, Flower Cannon could only shrug helplessly; he hadn’t considered how his sudden move would affect those above him.
The vehicle sped along swiftly; fortunately, the temperature wasn’t too low here; otherwise, everyone would have struggled against the fierce wind. They had started close to the airport, so they quickly arrived there.
When the vehicle finally came to a stop and turned off the engine, an eerie silence enveloped the scene that sent chills down their spines.
It was too quiet; this place seemed devoid of any living creatures. It felt as if no human or animal had set foot here since ancient times. The eerie silence made everyone's breathing grow increasingly rapid, as if a massive net were about to ensnare them.
"We should retreat," Lin Yi said, his voice hoarse and unsettling, a chill creeping down his back. He felt a twinge of fear.
"Where to?" Bai couldn't help but swallow hard, trying to moisten his parched throat.
The imposing airport building loomed before them, resembling a prehistoric beast that seemed ready to swallow them whole.
Where to? Lin Yi pondered this question himself, suddenly feeling like a lost child who couldn't find his way home.
"We're just pitiful children abandoned by others; where can we go?" Sea Cover Face murmured, her voice breaking into soft sobs after a long silence.
The group's spirits plummeted at the sound of her faint weeping, as if they truly were discarded pawns even the gods had forsaken.
More and more Zombies surrounded Witerson Combat Camp, the tracks of the armored vehicles stained with crushed flesh and blood. Yet this did nothing to dampen the Zombies' fervor for attacking the camp, drawn by the scent of fresh meat within.
Watching the Zombies outside that threatened to engulf them, Witerson II felt a deep sense of despair. Although he had confidence in his armored forces, facing these creatures who feared neither life nor death chilled him to the bone. He called for support from headquarters again and again, but there was not even an echo in response.
It turned out we truly are pawns, Witerson II sighed softly, murmuring to himself.
