Li Qiweng quickly drove the car next to Building Three, where many people were already busy. Various specialized vehicles filled the road, and an array of unique weapons were either stored in the cars or carried on people's backs. Fortunately, this street belonged to various special departments, making it generally off-limits to ordinary citizens. Otherwise, such a large gathering would have drawn the fear and attention of the public.
"Boss, I'm heading out for a bit!" Li Qiweng stated decisively, not even turning off the engine. She had just seen a message from Lin Yi on her communicator, but by the time she tried to respond, there was no reaction.
"Don't you know we need to act as a group?" Pachy was somewhat angry; Li Qiweng was not someone who disregarded the bigger picture, yet here she was suggesting to act prematurely.
"I'm going to Sunshine Beach to rescue someone!" Li Qiweng had already begun to reverse the car, unwilling to hesitate any longer.
"Wait a moment." Pachy's expression changed several times. "Take a specialized vehicle; there might be more than one department involved over there."
Li Qiweng nodded in acknowledgment and immediately jumped into a nearby departmental vehicle.
As everyone eagerly anticipated the arrival of a helicopter for rescue, they were shocked to see that the Armed Helicopter's guns were firing wildly at the Zombies, completely ignoring the fleeing crowd. Lin Yi felt a sense of dread; such chaotic shooting would surely mix Zombies with civilians, risking collateral damage. Although he wanted to shout something heartfelt, the powerful wind from the helicopter made it difficult for him to breathe, let alone yell.
It seemed as if to validate Lin Yi's fears, the helicopter's gun barrels quickly aimed at the ordinary people. The screams of the crowd and the roars of Zombies echoed intermittently in Lin Yi's ears amidst the howling wind.
Was this an extermination? Lin Yi screamed internally as his legs trembled uncontrollably; he saw the helicopter's guns pointing directly at him. In moments of life and death, everyone is equal; normal people do not wish to lose their lives easily. With a roar, Lin Yi pushed through as those in front were momentarily stunned. He had been among the first group of people moving forward and quickly reached the street leading into the city.
In that instant, Lin Yi felt abandoned by the world. What was his situation? Behind him were Zombies and approaching killing machines; ahead stood a group of Security Forces armed with assault rifles, pointing their weapons at those fleeing from the beach. Lin Yi unconsciously halted his steps; when he tried to move closer, the guns of those security personnel swung toward him with a swift motion. You might have the courage to face a group of armed robbers because you have justice on your side. You could also bravely stand against swarms of invaders because you are supported by righteousness. But what do you do when you are a law-abiding citizen facing those whose duty is to protect and serve?
The panicked crowd did not notice the bizarre situation before them; seeing Security Forces felt like reuniting with family as they rushed forward. Lin Yi could not help but close his eyes; before an ironclad military force, there was no sympathy—only unconditional obedience.
"Thud thud thud~" The sound of bullets entering flesh echoed as a burly man seemed unable to believe what was happening before him. He did not die at the jaws of a Zombie but was shot down by Security Forces instead. With resentment and anger in his heart, he ultimately fell, kicking up dust and leaving behind one last ripple in this world.
Even though Lin Yi had stopped moving, Zombies were closing in and so were deadly weapons; whether he moved forward or backward, he realized it all led to death. The Security Forces across from him were fully armed; their expressions hidden from view, but he knew they were merely following orders. Lin Yi should have been furious enough to confront them but instead had no choice but to wait for an opportunity.
"Let us pass! What right do you have to stop us?" Faced with unknown terror, people could only express their dissatisfaction through powerless shouts. Yet at that moment, what lay so close felt utterly unreachable; no one dared take another step forward.
Silence enveloped the area, as if the crows were indifferent to those teetering on the brink of life and death. Perhaps in their eyes, these people were no different from the dead. More individuals had turned into Zombies, but the powerful Armed Helicopter swiftly reduced those newly transformed into mere chunks of flesh. Lin Yi did not want to die like this; he still had Wen.
Ultimately, there were those who refused to succumb to despair. At that moment, faced with life and death, their defiance was even more pronounced. A middle-aged woman waved her plump arms wildly, exuding an air of determination.
"Everyone, charge forward! I refuse to believe they dare kill us all! I have relatives in high places; let’s see if they’re afraid!" The woman disregarded everything, flaunting her round figure as she boldly walked toward the front.
Human nature dictates that once someone takes the lead, others follow suit, emboldened by reason. Like a swarm, they surged forward. Lin Yi, anxious for Li Qiweng's safety, naturally followed suit. The opposing force remained unmoved like a colossal mountain. Soon enough, the crowd rushed toward the barricade; it was expected yet surprising. Gunfire erupted. In an instant, it was as if hell itself had descended upon the world—blood and flesh mingled in a chaotic dance on that noisy morning, showcasing a final brilliant performance for those about to perish. The screams of agony, roars of anger, curses, and the whistling of bullets seemed to compose a tragic elegy accompanying this grim spectacle. The horrific scene akin to hell did not evoke much sympathy; fear gripped everyone at that moment. After the initial shock wore off, people began retreating despite the countless dangers lurking behind them.
As gunfire erupted, Lin Yi instinctively rolled away and managed to position himself at the back of the crowd. Although he was soon trampled by panicked individuals, his sturdy build helped him withstand a few blows.
Li Qiweng's vehicle sped up as they approached Sunshine Beach, where more Military Vehicles appeared, completely isolating pedestrians.
"Have they sealed off information?" Li Qiweng knew this was their usual tactic. In the past, she could be an observer or an executor of such information blockades. But today, she was determined to pursue something she would never abandon under any circumstances.
Soon enough, someone emerged to block Li Qiweng's vehicle. Anxious in her heart, she knew she couldn’t afford to stop for inspection; that would waste precious time. The Military Police responsible for intercepting vehicles seemed taken aback by her audacity. After a brief pause, he tossed aside his cigarette and spat on the ground.
"Where did this arrogant fool come from?" The Military Police immediately jumped into his vehicle and activated the siren.
"Vehicle ahead! Please stop immediately! The area ahead is sealed off!" shouted the young Military Police officer through a megaphone.
As a member of the Special Department, Li Qiweng naturally wouldn’t take a Military Police officer seriously; she accelerated her vehicle to its limits. The young officer's shouts quickly attracted the attention of other Military Police officers. Soon after, more police cars began to mobilize in an attempt to intercept Li Qiweng. However, her exceptional driving skills allowed her to evade their blockade after a few sharp turns. A senior figure among the Military Police soon noticed something amiss and glanced at the off-road vehicle that had slowed down due to their encirclement; his eyelids involuntarily twitched.
"Is that a vehicle from Division Three? How did it get in here?"
"Are you sure it's from Division Three?" asked one of his subordinates with a frown; he too held a significant rank.
"Well, I've dealt with them a few times and know their vehicle numbers."
"Then tell the guys to stop. This is family turning against family."
As Li Qiweng expected, the cars pursuing her quickly returned to their original positions, and no one came to obstruct her anymore. The vehicle soon reached the final line of defense, and she saw the scene she dreaded most. Several rows of Security Forces were blocking the exit of the beach highway, with armored vehicles lined up behind them, and even a helicopter hovered in the air.
Li Qiweng's mind buzzed; at this moment, brute force was not an option. Her car approached the front line without any hindrance, as they likely recognized her identity. She could see a large crowd rushing toward her, but they were being held back by the Security Forces.
"I'm sorry, but the area ahead is already sealed off, and you don't have permission to enter," an officer said as he casually walked up to Li Qiweng when she stopped her car.
"I am here on orders from my superiors to assist you," Li Qiweng replied, feeling anxious but knowing she couldn't force her way through. Moreover, she was facing a Major while her own rank was only Captain. The military's chain of command prevented her from directly confronting an officer of a higher rank.
"I'm sorry, but we have enough personnel here!" The Major maintained a smile, but his tone left no room for argument.
Li Qiweng chuckled inwardly; the helicopter was still firing wildly, and those inside were unable to escape. It seemed they were preparing for complete annihilation. However, now that the people she cared about were inside, everything changed. The cries from within pierced Li Qiweng's resolute heart like poisonous thorns. She smiled lightly at the Major and obediently retreated into her car.
It seemed she hesitated for a moment, but in that instant, determination filled her eyes.
Lin Yi sensed something and glanced toward the back of the Security Forces. His heart raced as if something was about to emerge. However, being pushed around by the crowd felt like being battered by sandbags, making him realize he needed to work on his physical fitness.
