Li Qiweng and Pachy hurriedly stepped outside, and at that moment, Pachy had already connected with all the team members.
"Urgent mission, all team members report to the department as quickly as possible!" Each member of the Special Operations Department received this message on their devices.
"Hmph, is it starting?" A handsome young man under the sunlight read a line on his communicator and smiled eerily. Even under the blazing sun, that smile appeared chilling.
Lin Yi couldn't quite describe his feelings. Was this a movie? But clearly, there were no cameras around; everything he saw was real. The woman was obviously terrified, stumbling a few steps before falling again. With each fall, the monster drew closer to her. Lin Yi's legs felt weak; he slowly stood up from where he had been sitting on the grass.
"What is that?" More and more people began to see the "person."
"That's so scary! The makeup skills nowadays are really impressive," a short-haired girl covered her mouth, though she clearly didn't think that "person" posed any threat to her.
"It feels strange; it's almost like it's really going to bite someone!"
Perhaps in line with everyone's speculation, after several chases, that "person" finally got close to the Bikini Woman and opened its mouth wide, letting out a roar as it lunged forward.
"Roar!" That was the sound of a carnivore's excitement when it caught its prey. At that moment, everyone realized that this world wasn't always so simple.
The Bikini Woman was completely paralyzed with fear; when the monster pounced on her, she even forgot to scream for help. The monster mercilessly opened its bloody mouth, stretching it impossibly wide until it reached her ears. Thick saliva mixed with blood dripped onto the Bikini Woman as she stared in horror. Finally, the monster bit down, and a wailing scream echoed through the air.
"What... what is that?" Someone finally became conscious of something being wrong. In this peaceful era, we lacked a sense of crisis. So when danger truly arrived, many people didn't think about it at all.
"It's eating people! The zombie is eating people!" A bespectacled boy was watching the latest Resident Evil when he heard the screams; he looked up just in time to see the bloody scene unfold.
The people on the beach suddenly woke up to reality. Witnessing such a scene filled everyone with genuine fear. The crowd descended into chaos as they scrambled in all directions. Children playing on the beach couldn't find their parents and cried out in terror. Those who were confused saw the panicking crowd and joined in mindlessly running away. Everything fell into disarray; when unknown fear engulfed people's minds, no one could remain calm enough to handle the situation. The chaotic crowd pushed against each other; occasionally someone would be shoved down and trampled by those rushing past.
The zombie only took a few bites out of the Bikini Woman before getting back up and heading toward a new target. At that moment, everyone began to flee in panic without knowing where to go. The zombie's eyes gleamed with bloodthirsty excitement as it bounded toward a bald man with a round beer belly. Delicious, delicious—perhaps that was its only thought or perhaps its sole purpose for existence.
As those who understood the truth began to flee for their lives, more and more people fell victim to the zombie's bites. Perhaps death wasn't the scariest part because this was just the beginning. Lin Yi quickly grabbed his phone to call for help; he knew he might not be able to run far now.
"Hello, West District Security Service Station at your service." A sweet electronic voice rang in Lin Yi's ear, followed by a lazy voice of a middle-aged woman.
"Hello, I am Sally. How can I assist you?" Although her voice was mechanical, it was not entirely devoid of warmth.
"Y-You, hello! There are man-eating monsters by the beach, and many people have been bitten! Please send someone to rescue them quickly!"
"Oh, just a moment, sir. We will rush over as fast as we can." The woman's tone was flat, and Lin Yi couldn't help but feel a surge of admiration; the police really had good psychological resilience.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome. Serving the citizens is our duty." There was a brief pause on the line. "Is there anything else you need from us?"
"No..." Before Lin Yi could finish his sentence, the call was abruptly disconnected.
"Another boring person. Every month there are a few who report monsters eating people. Why haven't those prank callers been eaten instead? Do they really think I'm a fool?" After complaining for a moment, the operator resumed eating sunflower seeds while watching a drama.
Lin Yi had no time to dwell on such thoughts. The operator hadn't even asked for an address or details before hanging up; it was clear that they were just brushing him off or didn't believe him at all.
The crowd had already surged toward the only highway leading out of the area. Lin Yi couldn't run again, but this time he was more than willing to. He wouldn't forget to notify Li Qiweng, even though he was already out of breath.
"Beep beep beep~~" No one answered on the communicator, and Lin Yi felt an ominous premonition creeping in.
Li Qiweng was driving her sports car at top speed toward the action department located at 3 Elizabeth Avenue. A sudden pain gripped her heart; it wasn't a good sign. Although these vague feelings had no basis in reality, after witnessing so many bizarre events, Li Qiweng had come to trust her instincts.
"Slow down; it will take some time for everyone to gather," Pachy said, though his fingers tapped anxiously on his thigh, revealing his inner urgency.
"Boss, it seems like the situation isn't great; they’re probably already spreading."
"Don't think too much about it. Let's gather the team first and stay on standby."
The beach was descending into chaos; people were fleeing in all directions like madmen, their clothes disheveled and some even exposing themselves. But everyone had completely disregarded their image; escaping this hellish place was all that mattered. Lin Yi's stamina hadn't recovered yet, but fortunately, he was still a distance away from the beach. While others were running, he had already started sprinting with all his might. At that moment, Lin Yi wished for nothing more than a top-tier sports car to whisk him away from this pandemonium; he didn't want to be devoured piece by piece by a humanoid monster.
"Oh my God! The dead are coming back to life!" A sudden scream erupted behind him. Lin Yi turned to see someone sprinting toward him at breakneck speed. Without pausing for a moment, the figure shot past him like an arrow.
Lin Yi glanced at Sunshine Beach, where the sun still shone brightly. However, beneath the radiant sunlight lay a bizarre scene: the Bikini Woman, who had just been bitten to death, was now staggering to her feet. Her head tilted at an odd angle, likely due to the severe bite she had just suffered, her neck unable to support the lifeless weight of her head. Her gaze was vacant, and fresh blood streamed down from the wound on her neck, pooling on her pale skin, now drenched in Scarlet blood. Perhaps still disoriented from her recent "revival," she looked around in confusion until suddenly, as if spotting prey, she let out an excited scream.
"Infected. This is bad trouble," Lin Yi thought. As an official at the Biological Research Institute, he had some knowledge of such matters. The current situation indicated a Virus Infection, spreading rapidly. If this continued for much longer, it was likely that everyone would be doomed. The figure in the white lab coat had already plunged into the crowd, biting people left and right, each heart-wrenching scream echoing through the air. The speed of the white-coated Zombie seemed to increase with each bite it took; perhaps each victim granted it a bit more strength. More and more people fell victim to its bites—sometimes receiving several before it moved on to its next target.
"Emergency notification: Unidentified entities have been reported at Sunshine Beach. All departments prepare for immediate action," a high-priority alert blared in Pachy's ears. Even someone as resolute as him felt a tremor of fear within; this was the first high-priority notification since the establishment of the Special Operations Department.
"They've gone to Sunshine Beach, and it's serious," Pachy said after steadying his nerves, turning to Li Qiweng beside him.
"Oh." Li Qiweng was focused on driving and momentarily didn't register his words until a sudden realization struck her: "Sunshine Beach! How could this happen?" The car swerved slightly, nearly colliding with a passing bus.
"We'll be home soon; get ready to head to the beach immediately!" Pachy referred to the Special Operations Department as home because that was where his dreams resided.
Seeing that Pachy had nothing more to say, Li Qiweng swallowed back what she had almost voiced. It was evident that her speed had increased further, perhaps her heartbeat quickening as well.
Lin Yi noticed that more and more people were gathering around him. Despite his efforts to push through, he still moved like an elderly person struggling to walk. If this continued, he would inevitably become food for a Zombie's mouth. In the panic of escape, no one was willing to give way even a few steps—those few steps could mean the difference between life and death. A relatively sturdy man yanked a girl's hair to push his way forward; taking advantage of her momentary pain, he stepped on her back and jumped ahead. With this cue from him, others seemed to understand what needed to be done. A seductive woman lunged at a scrawny boy nearby; although he was thin, he wasn't one to be bullied easily and fought back fiercely against her. In their desperate bid for survival, everyone went wild, attacking others like Zombies because these people stood in their way.
"Ah! Damn it! I'm going to kill you!" In an attempt to validate their inner panic, the crowd began hurling insults at each other, perhaps forgetting that the real threat loomed not far away.
A chill ran down Lin Yi's spine as he felt an intense pressure pushing him down toward the ground. He forced himself to look up and saw a helicopter flying low overhead. He wanted to wave his arms to signal his presence but noticed that the helicopter's nose was spewing flames in fury...
