The river flowed swiftly, and the night was dark and foreboding. Zhang Hai's gun glinted coldly in the moonlight. The three of us stood frozen in place, afraid to even breathe.
"You really disappoint me," Zhang Hai sneered, "especially you, Zhao Lin. I thought you had some backbone, but it turns out you're just another spineless traitor."
I forced myself to suppress the fear rising within me, trying to buy some time. "Zhang Hai, you don't have to do this. We can talk..."
"Shut up!" Zhang Hai interrupted sharply. "Now, come back with me quietly. The boss will 'treat' you well."
Just when it seemed all hope was lost, Xiao Yu suddenly lunged at Zhang Hai. This girl, who usually appeared so fragile, now displayed astonishing courage.
"Run!" she shouted.
Gunfire erupted, and Xiao Yu's body jolted violently, yet she clung tightly to Zhang Hai without letting go. A Qiang and I quickly reacted and rushed forward. In the chaos, I snatched the gun from Zhang Hai while A Qiang landed a solid punch on him.
Zhang Hai collapsed to the ground, unconscious. We hurried to help Xiao Yu and discovered she had been shot in the shoulder.
"Hang in there, Xiao Yu!" I said with a trembling voice. "We're getting out of here right now."
A Qiang quickly found a small boat. We helped the injured Xiao Yu aboard, stumbling as we climbed in. A Qiang expertly started the engine, and the boat sped away across the dark river.
Behind us, the sounds of sirens and shouting faded into the distance. We had finally escaped that hellhole, but the road ahead was still fraught with uncertainty and danger.
"Xiao Yu, how are you holding up?" I asked anxiously while using my shirt to staunch her bleeding.
Xiao Yu managed a weak smile. "I'm fine... just a bit painful. Zhao Lin, are we... really free now?"
I held her hand tightly. "Yes, we're free. You have to hang on; we still have a long way to go."
A Qiang focused intently on steering the boat, but I could see the worry in his eyes. "We need to find a place for Xiao Yu to get treated quickly. But right now we're fugitives; going to a hospital is too dangerous."
After thinking for a moment, I suddenly remembered someone: "I have a distant cousin who runs a clinic in a border town; maybe he can help us."
And so, we followed the river toward that distant little town. Along the way, we took turns caring for Xiao Yu, bandaging her wounds. At dawn, we finally reached our destination.
With my cousin's help, Xiao Yu received timely treatment. But we all knew this was just a temporary respite. The police were surely tracking our whereabouts, and we had to leave quickly.
"What should we do next?" After resting for a night, A Qiang asked.
I took a deep breath. "We have evidence of the boss's crimes. Maybe... we can turn ourselves in and use this evidence to negotiate for leniency."
Xiao Yu weakly nodded. "I agree. We've made mistakes; it's time to take responsibility."
A Qiang was silent for a moment before finally agreeing to the plan.
Just as we were preparing to leave, an emergency news report suddenly aired on the television: a fraud gang's hideout in Northern Myanmar had been raided, and many were arrested, including two of the gang's leaders. On the screen, I saw the boss and those scammers being escorted away, and I caught a glimpse of Shento slipping through the crowd.
We exchanged glances, unsure whether to feel happy or worried.
"It seems the police have taken action," A Qiang said. "Our evidence might not be needed anymore."
I shook my head. "No, this is actually our opportunity. We can act as key witnesses and expose more of the insider information. This might lead to a lighter sentence."
Xiao Yu held my hand tightly. "No matter the outcome, we will face it together."
Looking at Xiao Yu and A Qiang, a warm feeling surged within me. In that wicked place, we had forged a bond of life and death. Regardless of whether judgment or redemption awaited us ahead, we would not abandon each other.
"Let's go," I stood up. "It's time to put an end to all this."
We walked toward the nearest police station. The sunlight shone down on us; although the future was uncertain, I felt a long-lost sense of calm. I knew that no matter what awaited us, we had gained true freedom from deep within our hearts.
As we pushed open the doors of the police station, I took a deep breath and spoke the words that had been brewing in my heart for so long:
"We escaped from the Northern Myanmar Scam Group. We want to turn ourselves in and provide important leads."
The police station fell silent in an instant, all eyes focused on us.
The officers began taking notes. The three of us exchanged glances, filled with both anxiety and relief. No matter what the future held, we would no longer be fighting alone. We had each other, the courage to start anew, and the determination to face everything ahead.
The following days felt like a dream. We were taken to a special interrogation room, answering various questions day after day, reve A Li ng the inner workings of the Telecom Fraud Group. Sometimes, I would find myself momentarily lost in thought, seeing the faces of the victims flash before my eyes, filled with guilt and remorse.
Our case garnered significant attention. The media rushed to report on us, labeling us as "wayward individuals returning to the right path." However, the law would not show leniency because of this.
After a lengthy trial, we ultimately received a lighter sentence due to our voluntary confession and active cooperation with the investigation. The moment we stepped out of the courtroom, the sunlight was so bright it was blinding.
Xiao Yu tightly grasped my hand. "Zhao Lin, we're free."
I looked at her and then at A Qiang, my heart swelling with mixed emotions. "Yes, we can finally start over."
A Qiang patted my shoulder. "No matter what happens next, we have to live well. For those we have hurt." I nodded solemnly.
I knew the road to redemption was still long, but at least we had found the right direction. As I walked out of the courthouse, I took a deep breath. Under the blue sky and white clouds, everything felt so beautiful.
I pulled out my phone and tremblingly dialed home: "Hello, Mom, it's me. I'm back..."
