My name is Zhao Lin, and I am 25 years old. After graduating from university, I spent nearly a year idling at home. That day, I never expected that an ordinary job advertisement on WeChat would plunge me into an abyss of no return.
"Knock, knock!" My mom came running to knock on my door.
"Xiao Lin, the son of Aunt Wang next door just bought a new car. When are you going to find a job?"
I sighed and pulled the blanket over my head, not wanting to hear any more. Ever since I graduated last year, these comparisons had never ceased. I knew my mom meant well, but this constant pressure only made me more anxious.
After my mom turned to leave, I aimlessly scrolled through my social media feed when a job advertisement suddenly popped up:
"High Salary Recruitment! Monthly income of 30,000+, five insurances and one fund, food and accommodation provided, easy work, no experience required!"
Normally, I would scoff at such ads. But this time, for some inexplicable reason, I clicked on the details page. Perhaps it was the anxiety from being unemployed for so long or the confusion about my future; whatever the reason, I added the recruiter on WeChat.
The recruiter introduced himself as Manager Wang, his profile picture showing a successful man in a suit. After some brief pleasantries, he asked about my education and work experience.
"Mr. Zhao, with your qu A Li fications, you completely meet our requirements," Manager Wang said. "Our company has a new project in Myanmar's special economic zone aimed at promoting e-commerce to overseas Chinese markets. The salary is generous, and it will help you gain overseas work experience for your future career development."
I was intrigued. Although working in Myanmar sounded a bit distant, earning money while gaining experience seemed too good to pass up.
"So... what exactly would the job entail?" I asked cautiously.
"Mainly online customer service and product promotion; it's very simple. We will provide training, food and accommodation, as well as round-trip airfare. Most importantly, the salary is settled daily—300 to 500 per day—making it easy to earn over 30,000 a month."
This job seemed tailor-made for me: high salary, no experience required, plus the chance to gain overseas work experience... I almost immediately agreed.
I held my phone, hesitating for a while before finally walking into the living room. My parents were watching the evening news. "Mom, Dad," I took a deep breath, "I might be going to work out of town."
Mom immediately turned her head, her eyes glimmering with both anticipation and concern. "Xiaolin, what kind of job is it?"
I briefly explained the situation. Dad frowned. "Myanmar? That's so far away! Is the pay really that good?" A wave of guilt washed over me, but I was reluctant to give up this hard-won opportunity. "I've checked, it should be fine. Besides, how will I know if I don't try?"
Mom sighed and got up to hug me. "Child, if you really want to go, we won't stop you. But you must pay attention to your safety and let us know if anything happens."
Seeing the worried expressions on my parents' faces made my heart ache. But I had already made up my mind to prove myself, so I nodded. "I promise I'll be careful."
Back in my room, I took a deep breath and clicked the send button.
The next morning, I received an electronic ticket with my destination set for Ruili in Yunnan Province. Manager Wang said someone would pick me up in Ruili and arrange transportation to Myanmar.
Excitedly, I packed my bags and told my parents that I had found a good job and would be developing my career out of town. Although Mom felt a bit reluctant, she was relieved to see me finally settling down and agreed.
With dreams of the future in my heart, I boarded the flight southward, unaware that a nightmare awaited me.
