While the outside of the Opera House was bustling with voices, the corridors inside were surprisingly quiet. Most people were gathered in the lobby or the outdoor plaza.
The orange lights lining the corridor created a soft glow that was not harsh on the eyes. Combined with the red carpet and wooden trim, it exuded a sense of luxury that matched the Opera House's prestigious reputation.
In one such corridor, a beautiful woman wearing glasses was walking and chatting with a man dressed entirely in a black trench coat and sunglasses as they made their way to the other end.
“Zhou Mi, is that follower behind us someone you arranged to protect me?” After they had walked a short distance while conversing, the mysterious man in black spoke in a peculiar tone.
His voice lacked inflection, resembling a dialect from Chongqing, which some foreign learners of Chinese also tended to mimic.
“Follower?” The woman with glasses, who had applied light makeup, paused slightly at his words, her expression shifting.
“Oh, so it’s not? Heh, then I’ll take care of it. You should be able to handle this little matter, right?” Noticing her reaction, the man in black seemed to understand something. With a cruel smile, he moved like a bullet released from its chamber.
He transformed into a shadow and lunged toward the corridor behind them.
“Wow, that’s fast!” Ma Xiaoyun’s face flashed with surprise as she realized something was off. She hadn’t expected him to be so alert and to sense her presence; his reaction speed was astonishing!
Before she could react further, the ghostly black figure reached her hiding spot beside a decorative vase, drawing a silver glint as he slashed toward her neck.
Instinctively, Ma Xiaoyun exerted force backward and tilted her head away just in time to evade the deadly strike. The dagger sliced past her throat, leaving a thin line of blood on her neck.
“Hmm?” The man in black seemed surprised that she managed to dodge his attack but did not pause his movements.
Taking advantage of Ma Xiaoyun's unsteady balance from leaning back, he spun around and delivered a powerful roundhouse kick that struck her arm protecting her side.
Ultimately losing his balance, even after attempting some defense, Ma Xiaoyun was violently kicked away by the attack, crashing into the wall on the other side of the corridor. The force of the kick was so powerful that it sent him flying, demonstrating the terrifying strength behind the strike.
A spinning kick is difficult to land in normal combat due to the required rotational movement, but once fully executed, its destructive power combined with the momentum of the body can be extremely overwhelming.
In typical combat scenarios, a spinning kick is usually only employed after several exchanges when one party is exhausted. However, this man in black executed such an attack almost immediately, and successfully at that, showcasing his confidence in his own abilities.
Ma Xiaoyun, struck directly, felt a horrifying twist in his arm as he protected his waist. After hitting the wall and falling to the ground, he began to convulse. The sheer force of that single kick was enough to incapacitate him, indicating the strength of the man in black. From Ma Xiaoyun's reaction, it was clear he possessed decent fighting skills himself.
"Wait!" The woman who had just fully reacted called out urgently.
Upon hearing her words, the man in black hesitated slightly but then continued to grip Ma Xiaoyun's neck, lifting him off the ground entirely.
Having lost all resistance from that spinning kick, Ma Xiaoyun could only weakly grasp at the hand choking him with his barely mobile right hand. His legs trembled feebly, unable to mount any further counterattack.
"Sir, wait! He’s one of ours," the woman wearing glasses said as she rushed over, visibly panicked.
"Oh? Is he a core member who knows about our relationship?" The man in black loosened his grip slightly upon hearing this, allowing Ma Xiaoyun to catch a breath, though his tone remained oddly flat.
"This..." The woman's expression darkened at his words.
"Since he’s been following us, he must die." Before he finished speaking, the man in black tightened his grip again. With a sickening crack, Ma Xiaoyun's already faint resistance ceased entirely.
His head drooped to one side; his body seemed to go limp.
"You! Ugh... He’s also a mid-level manager within our organization; this complicates things," the woman named Zhou sighed softly. However, there was no trace of sympathy for Ma Xiaoyun in her eyes. To her, knowing too much was a fatal flaw; it was merely a matter of how to handle this problem now.
"Hey, a mid-level manager secretly following your Chairman's secretary? Your management needs improvement. I doubt our partners have such issues with their management," the man in black remarked casually as he released his hold and tucked the body under his arm.
"We are currently in a period of rapid expansion, and some regulations are still being formulated. Such issues won't arise again in the future. For now, we need to handle this matter," I said, adjusting my glasses. Zhou Tong turned and walked ahead to start making the necessary contacts.
Meanwhile, Liu Lianyue, pressed against the wall with her mouth covered, was struggling in anger. However, her injuries had only just begun to heal, preventing her from breaking free from this constraint.
Blocking her from escaping was Zhao Liang, who was deep in thought while holding a cigarette butt between his lips. Once the two at the end of the corridor turned the corner and left, he lowered his hand that had been restraining her and lazily remarked, "Girls should focus on their studies at school and avoid getting involved in strange matters. Not every creepy uncle is as nice as I am."
"Cough cough." Liu Lianyue seemed to be reminded of her injuries and could only glare at him while coughing.
Seeing her pale face, Zhao Liang was somewhat surprised. It appeared she was indeed injured, yet her earlier counterattack had astonished him. If her injuries weren't serious, could it be that her fighting ability surpassed his?
It seemed that although she appeared young, she was not an easy character to deal with.
"Since you're injured, you shouldn't take any risks. Just rest for a bit." After saying this, Zhao Liang delivered a swift chop to Liu Lianyue's neck. She let out a muffled sound before going limp and losing consciousness. With a light chuckle, he hid her behind a fire door and continued walking forward while pulling out his handgun.
"Zhou Tong? He actually killed Ma Xiaoyun? The news has been completely blocked from me; it seems..." Zhao Chen, wearing a strange mask and a hood over his head, stared at the screen of a device resembling a camera in his hand, lost in thought.
What he didn't notice was that behind him, a shadowy figure quietly observed the images displayed on his device.
