Since he had decided to leave this place, Lin Yuan naturally needed to prepare himself. With the Mechanical Arms now at his disposal, tasks would undoubtedly become much easier.
He first resorted to a nearly barbaric method of removing two wheels from other bicycles, placing them on the back seat of his own bike as spare tires. If he ever found himself traveling in the wild and got a flat tire from something like a rock or a nail, he would have replacements ready.
Of course, Lin Yuan had considered taking apart that High-Tech Hover Bike manufactured in the year 000 of the Cosmic Calendar, but with his current primitive disassembly methods, he couldn't manage it. The bike's shell was made of an unknown material that was incredibly hard. When he struck it with his large wrench, it didn't even leave a mark; instead, it nearly rattled his own body apart. Thus, he reluctantly abandoned that idea.
Once everything was packed up, Lin Yuan stealthily made his way toward the exit. Out of caution, he hadn't scouted that direction earlier, so he had no idea what awaited him.
"It's stairs, and they lead upward. It seems my guess was correct; this warehouse is indeed underground." With several three-dimensional projection images returning to him, Lin Yuan finally confirmed the situation beyond the exit.
"On the surface, it looks relatively safe! There are no signs of humans or other machines! But I can't rule out hidden security measures, like the infamous Laser Barrier!"
Lin Yuan imagined scenes he had seen in sci-fi blockbusters. Regardless of what might happen now, he was already in the Cosmic Calendar era; even if an alien butler popped out, he wouldn't be surprised.
After hesitating for a moment, he cautiously ascended the stairs, trying to make as little noise as possible.
The staircase had three levels with two turns and fifteen steps per level. It seemed that even thousands of years later, humanity still faced housing shortages. It was hard to imagine how the owner of this warehouse managed to move over a hundred bicycles up and down.
Minutes later, Lin Yuan reached the top of the stairs without incident but soon discovered that the entrance door appeared to be locked.
"This is absolutely terrible! With my current abilities, I probably can't open this obviously high-security door. Even if I could break it down, the noise would surely alert nearby humans!"
For a moment, Lin Yuan felt like a trapped turtle waiting to be caught.
"No! I must try something; how can I let a door decide my fate? Huh? What's that?" Just as he was about to smash the door, Lin Yuan was suddenly captivated by a three-dimensional projection. It was an image relayed by his Auditory Radar every second. In the picture, a massive crack appeared on the wall as if something enormous had slammed into it with great force.
"It's on the left wall!" With just a thought, Lin Yuan used his Auditory Radar to lock onto the location shown in the projection. He had been moving along the right wall earlier and almost overlooked it.
"Strange? What kind of force could create such a large crack in this sturdy wall? Was it an earthquake? It doesn't seem likely since everything else is intact."
"Hey! Who cares! This crack has just done me a huge favor; I'll dig out an escape hole right here!" Lin Yuan thought for a moment before swinging two Adjustable Wrenches, starting to smash along the massive fissure.
This was quite a physical task, especially since Lin Yuan could only rely on the two Adjustable Wrenches. Although he had modified two Mechanical Arms, they could only move in circular motions. Initially, Lin Yuan struggled to adapt, but soon he found the trick: by swinging the Mechanical Arms in circles and using the force of inertia, he could generate significant power with each strike. He estimated that if he ambushed a human, it would be enough to deal a fatal blow.
After about an hour, Lin Yuan successfully carved out a hole in the wall large enough for him to pass through. Of course, all of this was thanks to that unknown powerful force that had completely destroyed the wall's structure. If it weren't for the limited area of force applied, the wall would have likely collapsed long ago.
However, even with the wall gone, Lin Yuan still couldn't see outside because all that lay beyond was dirt and shattered bricks and rubble!
But Lin Yuan couldn't afford to worry about that right now. After breaking through the wall, he was confronted by a strangely shaped Mechanical Remains—the very culprit responsible for smashing open the wall!
Lin Yuan instinctively felt that this Mechanical Remains was not an ordinary machine nor something like a Hover Bike; it was similar to him—a Mechanical Warrior!
Without a doubt, the massive crack in the wall was related to this Mechanical Warrior. But how did it end up here? Why was it buried under dirt and rubble?
After a while, Lin Yuan regained his focus. The appearance of this Mechanical Warrior's wreckage provided him with a wealth of useful information.
First, he realized he wasn't alone. Although he wasn't sure whether this so-called Mechanical Warrior was created by humans or belonged to an alien civilization.
Second, the outside world seemed vastly different from what he had imagined. The reason no humans disturbed this Underground Warehouse was entirely due to war; after all, no one would risk their lives digging into a basement beneath a ruin.
Third, Mechanical Warriors could die too. Although Lin Yuan had seen references to Health Points in his attributes, subconsciously he still believed himself to be immortal since the materials making up his body wouldn't rot or disappear like human bodies—they would merely change their external form.
However, it seemed that death existed for Mechanical Warriors as well.
This led to another question: if Mechanical Warriors also experienced death like humans did, didn't that mean they were, in some sense, lifeforms too?
"This—this is terrifying! I shouldn't think about these things; I need to focus on my situation and figure out how to escape from this ruin!"
With that thought in mind, Lin Yuan sighed and silently said to himself, "Sorry about this, buddy. For my escape plan, I have no choice but to disturb your eternal rest!"
Lin Yuan directly activated his Mechanical Arms to begin clearing the rubble surrounding the wreckage. Although this task was quite challenging, he couldn't afford to worry too much. With a war raging outside, human society was undoubtedly in a state of chaos, and this situation was a golden opportunity for him. If he didn't take advantage of it to escape now, it would be too late once the city began to rebuild.
"Beep! E1 level Mechanical Warrior wreckage detected. No energy available for absorption!"
"E-Class Standard Battle Blade detected. Level too low for installation!"
"Mechanical Remains average Enhancement Level 5 detected. Can be used for enhancement, requires Modification Points and corresponding amount of Standard Energy!"
As Lin Yuan's Mechanical Arms made contact with the Mechanical Remains, three pieces of information immediately appeared in his mind.
However, after reading them, Lin Yuan's initial excitement diminished significantly. The lack of absorbable energy was disappointing, but he hadn't expected any energy to remain in a Mechanical Remains anyway.
The E-Class Standard Battle Blade seemed like a good find, but the problem was that he was currently only at F1 level, and he had no idea how far away E1 level was. Would he even survive long enough to reach it?
What disappointed him the most was that these Mechanical Remains could be used for enhancement. An average Enhancement Level of 5 was impressive! His own Enhancement Level was only 0.45. If he could successfully enhance himself, wouldn't his Defense Power skyrocket? Against ordinary enemies, he could just stand there and let them wear themselves out!
"What a pity! Advancing to F1 level only gives me two Modification Points! That's just too little!" After grumbling for a while, Lin Yuan realized he needed to change his current plan. He couldn't afford to abandon these Mechanical Remains; however, he also couldn't carry them around all day.
Thus, he decided that this Underground Warehouse couldn't be abandoned just yet. Perhaps he could turn it into a hiding spot for himself, at least until he advanced to the next level.
Since he wanted to establish this place as a safe haven, Lin Yuan wasn't in a hurry to leave. He first dug out the Mechanical Remains from the rubble and then painstakingly dragged them to the deepest part of the Underground Warehouse, blocking the entrance with several bicycles.
After completing this task, Lin Yuan still felt uneasy because he couldn't stay in the Underground Warehouse indefinitely; he needed to venture outside to find ways to continue leveling up and gather energy for survival.
However, he had no idea what conditions awaited him outside. If danger arose, simply escaping back here wouldn't be enough; therefore, he needed to implement some defensive measures.
"It seems I have no choice but to make do with these bicycles!" After careful consideration, Lin Yuan decided to use the over one hundred bicycles as part of his defense strategy.
After surveying the area a few times, Lin Yuan resolved to set up two defensive lines at the corners of the two staircases. The bicycles would form these lines; by stacking them together and leaving only a narrow passage for himself to enter and exit, they could serve as a crucial barrier if he encountered an enemy that he couldn't face head-on.
After working tirelessly for over ten hours, Lin Yuan finally managed to move more than fifty bicycles to the corners of two staircases. Fortunately, he didn't feel fatigued; otherwise, it would have been quite overwhelming. Of course, some energy expenditure was unavoidable.
What pleased him greatly was the high efficiency of this low-level energy utilization. After such prolonged labor, he had only consumed a small amount of energy, and this was just Low-Level Energy. If it were replaced with the Standard Energy used by an E1-level Mechanical Warrior, the efficiency would likely be even greater.
Having dealt with the two defensive lines of the Underground Warehouse, Lin Yuan shifted his attention to the rubble blocking the exit. This was a challenging task; excavating a passage would likely require at least a dozen units of energy.
But now, Lin Yuan couldn't afford to think too much about that. Grabbing two Adjustable Wrenches, he began the long process of digging. After several landslides and being buried multiple times, he finally saw the long-awaited sunlight at the cost of thirteen units of energy.
"Ha! What an extraordinary experience this has been! If it were a human body, I would have probably met the Grim Reaper a dozen times by now!" Standing atop the pile of rubble, covered in dirt and grime, Lin Yuan thought with a sense of pride.
However, the three-dimensional projection returned by his Auditory Radar made his heart sink. Surrounding him was nothing but ruins; a few high-rise buildings that had miraculously survived were reduced to hollow shells by fire, resembling empty, pale eye sockets that exuded endless desolation and silence.
"How could it be like this?" Although Lin Yuan had hoped that the war outside would create an opportunity for him to escape, witnessing this scene made him feel a deep sadness. He hadn't expected the scale of destruction to be so vast that an entire city had been obliterated.
With a sigh, Lin Yuan collected his thoughts. He no longer belonged to humanity; he needed to find a way to fill his stomach!
No, he needed to search for units of energy!
