"Dad, Dad! Are you still not getting up? The sun is already shining on your backside!" Wang Chao felt as if an elephant were standing on his stomach. Groggily, he opened his eyes and saw a cute little girl standing on his blanket, shouting at him. Her two ponytails bounced with her movements, and for a moment, Wang Chao was a bit dazed.
He instinctively asked, "What time is it now?"
"It's almost noon! The uncles are all waiting for you. Mom and Auntie have gone too; they're just waiting for you!" The little girl put on a dramatic expression and continued, "You didn't forget, did you? Today is the day the Hero Monument is completed. We’re all waiting for you, Dad. You're getting sillier by the day! Hurry up and get up; I'm going to find my brother to play. You better get up nicely!"
With that, the little girl dashed out of the room like the wind. Wang Chao shook his head helplessly; this little girl had truly inherited her mother Shen Zhitao's personality—everything she did was full of energy. In contrast, his eldest son was gentle and considerate like his mother Yang Mengying, never arrogant or impatient, resembling one of his old friends, Zhang Fusheng.
Speaking of which, he had just dreamed about that great battle from before. He couldn't believe that three years had passed in the blink of an eye. Stretching lazily, Wang Chao looked out through the floor-to-ceiling window. Outside the mansion stood straight soldiers, all looking spirited. Many of their faces still showed youthfulness, and in the sunlight, they appeared imposing.
After a quick wash and tidying up, Wang Chao stepped out of the mansion. A soldier ran over; it was none other than Wang Xiaochuan. Standing at attention and saluting, he said, "Chairperson, the car is ready!" Then he raised an eyebrow and added, "The young master is already waiting in the car!" Wang Chao patted Wang Xiaochuan on the shoulder and said, "You're about to become a father; be more composed!"
"Yes!" Wang Xiaochuan laughed heartily and ran off.
The weather today was quite nice. Wang Chao could hardly believe that not long ago, the last zombie in Huaxia had been slain. From then on, there were no more zombies in Huaxia. Eight years had passed since the outbreak of the Zombie Virus until now when Huaxia was free from zombies. Gao Rui's vaccine had also been developed; those infected for only a short time could still be saved.
Shen Zhiying and Tang Feng had somehow gotten together and inexplicably became Wang Chao's brother-in-law. He didn't even know when they had started dating. Zhuang Peng and Shui Yun'er were naturally married now, with a child older than Wang Chao's eldest son by a year. Yiyi and Xiao Wei were still dating; considering their age, twenty was indeed time to think about marriage. However, both Yiyi and Xiao Wei's parents had died during the zombie crisis—were they considered family or not? Wu Wan'er remained single but ever since she learned that Wang Chao had married both Shen Zhitao and Yang Mengying, she had been determined to marry him too. It made Wang Chao wonder where that gentle Wu Wan'er had gone.
Da Qiang was still single as well; he claimed he was too busy in the army to find a partner. At thirty years old, being single wasn't ideal anymore—Yang Mengying would have to introduce him to someone.
Lost in thought, he found himself at the car where his eldest son was waiting for him. On a whim, Wang Chao lifted his son onto his shoulders and ignored Wang Xiaochuan’s calls from behind as he walked toward the square. "Where's your sister? Didn't she say she was coming to find you?" His son looked quite helpless and sighed before saying, "She rode Little Wolf off like the wind!"
Hearing this, Wang Chao burst into laughter; this daughter of his had indeed turned Little Wolf into an old wolf now.
Unknowingly, they had already walked out of the military district and into the outside world. The eldest son asked Wang Chao, "Dad, I heard you are a hero who saved Huaxia. Is that true? I don't see it. Your skills don't seem that high."
Wang Chao seemed not to hear his son's words. The spring sunshine was warm, shining on the newly built and freshly painted building, making it look exceptionally bright. People around were busy with their own affairs; as noon approached, the aroma of cooking wafted from various homes, making one's mouth water. The chatter of the surrounding citizens reached Wang Chao's ears:
"I say, Brother Wang, how old is your daughter now? You're still personally picking her up and dropping her off at school?" Aunt Li asked teasingly while picking vegetables, glancing at the little girl in the backseat. The shy girl gently patted her father's back and said, "I told you I wanted to go to school by myself!" She was quite adorable, and Brother Wang just laughed heartily without saying a word.
Nearby, a family was coming out of a building; there were quite a few people. It seemed like the parents of both sides were meeting. The girl blushed while the boy tightly held her hand, occasionally whispering something in her ear that made her face turn even redder. The parents appeared very pleased with the situation and were discussing setting up their children's marriage on this day of the monument's completion.
Looking further aside, a group of soldiers was heading towards the square. A woman on a second-floor balcony was tending to a pot of flowers that Wang Chao couldn't name while calling out to a mischievous child below who still hadn't returned home for dinner. Everything felt so real and endearing. Wang Chao's eyes seemed to glisten with tears, leaving his eldest son puzzled.
"Dad, I ask you, why does everyone call you a hero? Can you tell me what happened before?"
Only then did Wang Chao snap back to reality from his emotions. He patted his son's back and said, "I'm not a hero; I just happened to do the right thing at the right time!"
The eldest son didn't understand and replied, "But they all say you're a hero."
In the distance, Wang Chao could already see the monument. The completed monument towered into the clouds, and the square was bustling with people. As Wang Chao looked closely, he couldn't make out the names on the monument due to the distance. Suddenly, a phrase flashed in his mind: "Your name may be unknown, but your achievements will last forever."
Yuan Min, Xiaocao, Liu Jie, Ouyang En—the soldiers who blocked the nuclear leak—and the elderly who chose to fight so as not to burden others—all these names and various figures surged in Wang Chao's mind like scenes from a movie. He walked slowly towards the square, pointing at the monument and telling his son:
"I'm not a hero; these people are!"
