Time was of the essence. According to estimates, the three divisions led by Huangfu Ling, Huangfu Nan, and Huangfu Cheng had already set out. Meanwhile, the logistics team under Huangfu Yan had spent half a day engaged in combat and collecting weapons. Now, as dusk began to settle in, Wang Chao felt increasingly uneasy about the route taken by the troops personally led by Huangfu Yan.
Although Wang Xiaochuan's recent actions had inadvertently encountered the logistics team of the Huangfu Army, Wang Chao still felt a sense of apprehension regarding someone like Huangfu Yan. It appeared that this logistics team was composed mostly of older veterans, lacking in combat effectiveness. Given Huangfu Yan's character, such a unit seemed more akin to the logistics teams of Huangfu Ling, Nan, and Cheng.
The main force of the Huangfu Army—their strongest combat troops—had yet to reveal themselves, which only heightened Wang Chao's anxiety.
Wang Chao ordered a swift return to the capital. By the time they arrived, night had completely fallen. He instructed everyone to rest and eat on the spot while he made his way to a two-story building at the back, casually munching on a biscuit. At that moment, Old Zhang's study had been transformed into a temporary command center. The soldiers on either side recognized Wang Chao and saluted as they stepped aside.
Wang Chao nodded and entered Old Zhang's study without wasting any time. He immediately asked, "Have you looked at the map Zhu Feng brought back?" After posing the question, he surveyed those present. Zhao Lao and Zhang Fusheng were still there, along with several older officers; however, none held the rank of general. Compared to Huangfu Yan, they were still a level below.
Upon seeing Wang Chao return, everyone was too pressed for time to exchange pleasantries. Zhao Lao spoke directly: "The map brought by Zhu Feng is very useful; it indicates that over half of the Huangfu Family's forces are mobilizing. We have already dispatched people ahead; they should arrive before the Huangfu Army does. However, what concerns us is that this only accounts for half of their forces—there are still at least seven thousand troops unaccounted for!"
"Where could these seven thousand troops be?" Zhao Lao sighed.
On his way back, Wang Chao had not been idle; he had gathered intelligence from other team members while on the move. However, apart from encountering small groups of scouts, members of the Thunder Strike Team found no signs of large troop movements from Huangfu Yan's forces. They did notice some anomalies among those scouts but could not specify what was different.
Wang Chao declared, "After we rest for a moment, we will head out again to investigate. We must find out where these seven thousand troops have gone!"
Zhang Fusheng waved his hand dismissively and said, "You just returned with the Thunder Strike Team; you should rest tonight instead of going out again. I have already sent other scouts out. The war will break out soon enough, and our first battle will be at Wuping Mountain!" Zhang Fusheng pointed at the map and continued, "Huangfu Ling has been on the move for half a week now, while our forces have only just set out."
Furrowing his brow, Zhang Fusheng added, "Although Huangfu Ling may not know that we are aware of his movements, we left later than him. Who reaches Wuping first remains uncertain!"
Wang Chao nodded as Zhang Fusheng continued, "As for Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng over there, they should be relatively secure. Although they have both fought in battles since childhood, from what I know about them—they're just two spoiled brats. Their skills in leading troops are certainly above average compared to ordinary people but likely not enough to match my dispatched forces. We need not worry about those six thousand men!"
A week ago, Wang Chao had overheard a conversation among the younger generation of the Huangfu Family beneath a vehicle. Aside from Huangfu Ling, who displayed a more reserved demeanor, the other two spoke like spoiled youths, already scheming for the power of the Huangfu Family amidst the current clarity of the situation. Such individuals were indeed unafraid.
Zhang Fusheng said, "Wang Chao, our roles in this war are actually significant. Who could have imagined that one person could stand against an entire army? Yet now, that possibility exists. Although you are only at Platinum Level, your strength can reach Diamond. Back in Yucheng, when you were corrupted, you showed no fear even against tanks and artillery..."
Wang Chao understood that Zhang Fusheng wouldn't say such lengthy words without purpose; there was definitely deeper meaning behind them. He listened as Zhang Fusheng continued, "In front of us, those soldiers' lives are as insignificant as grass. However, if possible, we should only target the officers. Those soldiers may follow Huangfu Yan, but they are still our descendants of Huaxia. To shoot a man is to shoot a horse; to capture a thief is to capture the king. As long as we can seize Huangfu Yan, this war will collapse without a fight."
Zhang Fusheng's words resonated deeply. Wang Chao had always known that Zhang Fusheng was kind-hearted; despite being one of the most powerful and influential figures in Huaxia, he had not been tainted by the evils of these families. Zhang Fusheng said to Wang Chao, "Right now, an army of a thousand has gathered outside. These individuals are all at Silver Level—truly exceptional talents selected from various legions."
Wang Chao indeed heard the sounds of troop movements outside but was unsure of Zhang Fusheng's intentions. For ordinary people, reaching Silver Upper Tier since the Zombie crisis was already an impressive feat. In terms of leveling up, they could not compare to beasts like Wang Chao and Zhang Fusheng; thus, Wang Chao recognized that these individuals were elite within their ranks.
"Now, I am handing over this thousand-man army to you. They will fully obey your commands; as for the mission, you can decide!" With that, Zhang Fusheng handed Wang Chao an Officer ID again. Wang Chao looked at it and found his own photo on it; however, his rank had risen from Major to Colonel. He did not dwell on this too much and simply nodded.
But everyone knew that they were currently in chaotic times; otherwise, Wang Chao would never have reached this position in his lifetime.
Now there were only about six or seven thousand troops left in the capital; the rest had already been dispatched. This meant that the forces of both the Huangfu Family and the Imperial Army were nearly equal in number and strength. On one side were Wang Chao and Zhang Fusheng; on the other side were Huangfu Yan's subordinates—nine elite fighters whose strength should not be underestimated, likely at least Golden Intermediate.
Thus, both sides relied on nothing but ordinary soldiers at this point.
Wang Chao said, "Let’s rest for a day; tomorrow I will lead these men into action!"
