A whistle pierced the air as Little Wolf dashed in from a distance, wind swirling beneath its feet, red and white streaks flowing. Wang Chao mounted Little Wolf and reassured everyone, "Don't worry, I'll be back soon." With that, the pair vanished into the horizon, embarking on a spontaneous journey. Little Wolf's speed was astonishing, a stark contrast to the slow ride in a car just yesterday.
They raced along the way, and after half a day, Wang Chao and Little Wolf arrived at the western district of the city. This area was mostly residential, with few tall buildings; the further west they went, the fewer skyscrapers there were. Instead, they found sprawling bungalows everywhere. The roads were complex, winding through numerous alleys; if one didn’t know the way, getting lost wouldn’t be surprising.
Wang Chao knew that Gao Rui lived somewhere in this cluster of bungalows but couldn’t fathom why such a top scientist would reside here. Little Wolf leaped onto one of the rooftops while Wang Chao scanned the surroundings. To his surprise, there wasn’t a single Zombie in sight; it seemed like they had been deliberately cleared out. He wondered if it was Gao Rui's doing. "Let’s go inside!" Wang Chao commanded. Little Wolf obeyed and jumped down into the bungalow area through a narrow path.
The bungalows resembled a maze; after several turns, he still didn’t see any windows or doors. What should have been entrances had been removed and replaced with red bricks and cement, clearly distinguishable from the surrounding structures. Wang Chao touched the wall; it felt dry, indicating that this had been done quite some time ago.
But why would someone intentionally seal off these windows and doors? Wang Chao was puzzled but sensed something suspicious about this place. With that thought in mind, he drew his Panlong Blade and thrust it into the wall. About a meter in, he found it hollow behind; this indicated that it wasn’t completely sealed off—only the doors and windows had been blocked.
Realizing this, Wang Chao sliced down with his Panlong Blade and gently pushed; the bricks collapsed inward. Peering inside revealed an ordinary home: three rooms and a living room with a kitchen separated by a wall, but no bathroom—it seemed to be shared outside. After inspecting closely, he found no human Zombies or corpses.
The furniture was intact and complete, as if frozen in an ordinary day. Wang Chao searched thoroughly but found nothing unusual. It struck him as odd; actions usually have reasons behind them—no one would seal up doors and windows for no reason unless they were insane or deranged.
Despite his thorough search yielding no abnormalities, Wang Chao had no choice but to lead Little Wolf out again. He proceeded to break through several more walls of different houses to investigate further. He discovered that all these homes had similar layouts; only the arrangement of furniture and kitchen locations differed. They were all ordinary—definitely no hidden mechanisms or secret doors. He couldn’t tell if he simply hadn’t found anything or if this was just some madman’s prank.
“Damn it,” Wang Chao muttered. “With so many bungalows here, even if Gao Rui really lives in this area, it won’t be easy to find him right away. Plus, all these doors and windows are sealed shut; who knows how long it will take to locate Gao Rui? And with night falling fast, searching in the dark will only make things harder. It’s better to find a place to stay for now.”
With that thought in mind, Wang Chao returned to one of the bungalows. He stacked bricks up against the opening to block it off; while it wouldn’t withstand much force, it would serve as an early warning if any Zombies or beasts approached. The house was decent enough—there were gaps for airflow—and as Wang Chao lay on the bed, he pondered where Gao Rui could be hiding.
Little Wolf lay beside him on the floor.
Lost in thought, Wang Chao soon fell asleep. Suddenly, he was jolted awake by a sound outside the wall—something seemed to be scraping against it, producing an irritating noise like fingernails on a chalkboard that made his skin crawl. Sitting up abruptly, he listened intently; it sounded as though it came from all directions—not just one spot—as if something lurked within the very walls themselves.
Little Wolf widened its eyes, listening to the movements within the wall. Its limbs were tense, ready to spring into action at any moment. Wang Chao gently patted Little Wolf, signaling it to relax and not be so anxious. They should first listen to the sounds; the persistent "squeaking" noise did not seem like something a living creature could produce.
Instead, it sounded like the grinding of gears.
Could there be some kind of mechanism here? Suddenly, a series of howls pierced the dark night, unmistakably from beasts and Zombies. Wang Chao felt a surge of urgency as he peered through a crack. Outside, shadows flitted by—some standing upright and others on all fours—but each moved with incredible speed, definitely not your ordinary Zombies.
The wails echoed endlessly. Just as Wang Chao was about to look through the gap again, a sudden movement came from beneath the bed. The entire bed split in two, pulling apart to reveal a deep hole in the middle. Wang Chao was taken aback and quickly drew his Panlong Blade. He had failed to notice that the bed was movable during his earlier inspection.
This indicated that the mechanism was exceptionally clever. If that were the case, it made sense why the doors and windows were sealed. Then Wang Chao saw that the wall he had entered through also split open. Upon closer inspection, he discovered that embedded within the bricks was a steel plate nearly a meter thick. However, due to his Panlong Blade's ability to slice through metal easily and his lack of attention, he had completely missed it.
Damn it! What a blunder!
How could he have overlooked such an obvious detail? The only person capable of setting up such a mechanism in Jing City would be Gao Rui, especially with his scientist's credentials. But amidst all these houses, where could Gao Rui be? And where had all those monstrous Zombies come from just moments ago?
Though it seemed like an eternity of contemplation, it was merely a few seconds for Wang Chao. He glanced at the deep black hole and said to Little Wolf, "Let's check upstairs and see what's going on here; we need to make some plans."
But before Wang Chao and Little Wolf could ascend, a chilling howl erupted from within the black hole, sending shivers down their spines!
