After landing, Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao remained silent as they hurried towards Huangfu Ling. Upon hearing that a large wave of Zombies was approaching the camp, Huangfu Ling furrowed his brow. "Are you sure that the loud noises won't draw those Zombies away?" Huangfu Ling asked, still feeling uneasy.
Shen Zhitao and Wang Chao nodded in unison. Shen Zhitao spoke up, "In about a week, those Zombies will reach us. We need to make a decision quickly; every day we hesitate increases the danger." Huangfu Ling nodded and said, "Come with me to see Old Lei. Wang Chao, go fetch Mayor Li."
Wang Chao nodded. Li Dewei had been hiding in the tank, but now he was wandering outside. When he saw Wang Chao approach him, his previously cheerful expression turned serious. Wang Chao didn’t mind; after all, he was the one responsible for turning Li Dewei's son into a eunuch.
However, Wang Chao noticed Chen Feifei again; it seemed she was always where Li Dewei was. He thought to himself, but he knew this wasn’t the time to dwell on such matters. So, he led Li Dewei towards Huangfu Ling and Old Lei.
When they arrived, Wang Chao found that Old Lei and Huangfu Ling had already laid out a map on a table and were pointing at various locations. Upon seeing Li Dewei enter, Huangfu Ling looked up and said, "Mayor Li, we can’t go down this road; a large group of Zombies is gathered ahead. This route is blocked."
Li Dewei appeared unconcerned and replied, "Oh, in that case, we can go around or head back; either works."
Li Dewei's nonchalance stemmed from his ignorance of the situation's severity. He believed he was safe; even if they couldn't reach the capital city, they could at least return to that small town. As a mayor, he assumed he wouldn’t starve. But everyone else knew that returning was not an option; they had been traveling for weeks, and the Nuclear Power Plant was likely on the brink of collapse—an explosion could happen at any moment.
Going back would be tantamount to seeking death.
Thus, there was only one alternative: to find a way around. However, saying it was easy; executing it was incredibly difficult. Where could they go around? They were in a saddle between two peaks with only two routes ahead or behind them. If they wanted to detour, they would have to go over the mountains.
But once they ascended the mountains, tanks couldn’t be used, cars wouldn’t work—what about food? What about accommodations for personnel? Moreover, who knew if there were creatures like Mourning Lions up there? After all, an entire zoo had fallen; what if a pack of Zombie tigers appeared?
If these issues couldn’t be resolved, then going around would merely be an empty dream.
Huangfu Ling sat on a stool and took a deep breath before pointing at Erlong Mountain. "We can go over the mountain directly; behind it is Yucheng."
"But that’s not..." Old Lei began to say this wasn't the best solution when he suddenly recalled the situation at the Nuclear Power Plant. Climbing the mountain would undoubtedly be difficult and could lead to many deaths along the way. However, compared to going back or moving forward—both of which guaranteed death—there remained a slim chance of survival by taking this perilous route.
"Get ready, Mayor Li, and inform everyone," Old Lei's voice was a bit hoarse. All this way, they had hoped to reach the capital safely and peacefully, but unexpectedly, before even arriving at Yucheng, they had already lost hundreds of people. This didn't even count those who were injured and needed care. If this continued, a third of the team would be lost.
Li Dewei said, "There must be some danger in these mountains; the tank can't go up there." It had been mentioned before that Li Dewei had been hiding inside the tank. Even when facing the Mourning Lion, he felt secure within the steel beast. No matter how formidable the Mourning Lion was, it couldn't shake him. But now, if they had to climb the mountain, the tank wouldn't be able to follow. Without that barrier, Li Dewei naturally felt a bit more vulnerable.
Huangfu Ling knew exactly what Li Dewei was thinking. He said, "Don't worry; when the time comes, I will send a plane to take you to Yucheng."
Li Dewei replied, "It's not that I can't climb the mountain; it's just that I'm getting older. It wouldn't be good to hold up the team." Wang Chao silently cursed him: "There are plenty of people older than you outside; why don't you let them take the plane? Truly shameless."
Such a significant matter couldn't proceed without Li Dewei's consent. Especially since this grandson might cause trouble from within. However, such people were generally easy to control. So although Huangfu Ling disliked him, he couldn't dismiss him outright. Huangfu Ling stated, "Mayor Li should indeed be on that plane."
Upon hearing Huangfu Ling's agreement, Li Dewei smiled broadly like a dung beetle spotting a giant dung ball on the Australian plains. He said, "By the way, I want to bring two others with me; you know I..."
"Alright, alright," Huangfu Ling interrupted. "One plane will be assigned to you; bring whoever you want. Now, inform everyone about this matter. Journalists must not cause panic; we need to control the situation." Li Dewei patted his chest and assured, "Don't worry; Old Li guarantees to complete the mission."
Li Dewei stepped outside, and soon his voice echoed through the loudspeakers—same old routine: stating the most important matters simply and lightly while exaggerating the benefits of the outcome. After listening for a while, everyone realized it was just his usual rhetoric and went back to their tasks.
Old Lei called for Captain Lei, his son, and said, "Lieutenant Lei, notify the troops to unload all supplies and gather everyone for distribution."
Li Dewei's words were meaningless drivel in the ears of people like Huangfu Ling and Wang Chao. However, among the crowd, they detonated like a nuclear bomb in their hearts. They were so close to reaching Yucheng in just a few more days—why take the mountain route? Because it was dangerous? Did encountering zombies make climbing over mountains any less dangerous?
In an instant, discontent surged among the crowd.
Wang Chao stepped out of the makeshift command center and shook his head at the curses coming from people by the roadside. There were many things in this world that went against one's wishes; you might genuinely want what's best for others, yet they feel you're harming them instead. Meanwhile, some people who clearly wished you ill could manipulate you into compliance willingly.
Here, they were still on the edge of Nuclear Radiation. Wang Chao knew that until they had truly crossed this mountain, everyone remained in danger.
