Wang Chao had a restless sleep. Outside, the sounds of the Zombies grew louder at night, reminding him of the wild cats in heat during spring. Yang Mengying and Yiyi occasionally frowned as well. Wang Chao went to another room and tried calling Liu Xiaoxiao's phone several times, but there was no response. He helplessly realized that their area seemed to have lost all communication; his phone was silent.
Rubbing his temples, Wang Chao tried to erase the anxiety and helplessness building inside him. Looking out the window, he noticed that the Zombies appeared even more agitated at night, moving faster than before. Although he couldn't understand why this was happening, he knew one thing for sure: they must not venture out at night. The way they moved was almost comparable to that of ordinary people.
Leaning against the window, Wang Chao watched the Zombies below, puzzled by their sudden outbreak. It couldn't be airborne; otherwise, there would be no living humans left in this world. Water? He had drunk plenty when he woke up and hadn’t turned into a Zombie himself. However, he dared not think about whether any Zombies had perished in the water source. What else could it be?
In a haze, Wang Chao finally fell asleep.
When he woke up, he looked outside and saw living people running frantically, only to be surrounded by waves of Zombies, ultimately becoming breakfast for them. Their mangled bodies would then join the ranks of the Zombie Squad, following the horde. Wang Chao thought to himself that at least the first wave of Zombies hadn't been missing limbs; now it seemed that anyone caught by them ended up either disemboweled or missing arms and legs. Becoming a Zombie was bad enough without being worse off than others—what nonsense!
As he sighed, Wang Chao shouldered his large backpack filled with water and food; the remaining supplies were hidden under his bed. He thought about finding Liu Xiaoxiao and how he would have to return afterward. He wondered if the military was taking any action; there had been no news on television, indicating that the chaos was widespread.
Yang Mengying looked at Wang Chao and asked, "Are you really not going to let us come with you?"
Wang Chao nodded and replied, "Yeah, it's too dangerous outside. You and Yiyi—one is a young lady and the other a little girl—what if those Zombies are attracted to pretty girls? That would just make it easier for them!" Yang Mengying playfully hit him on the arm and laughed, "What time is it? You're still joking around!"
Wang Chao chuckled back, but then Yang Mengying seemed to remember something and said, "I wonder how my parents are doing. I can't reach them by phone..."
Wang Chao patted her shoulder reassuringly and said, "Don't worry; within three days, the government will definitely take action. Your parents are well-known doctors; someone will come to rescue them. If you're still worried when I get back, we can go look for them!"
Yang Mengying nodded obediently.
Wang Chao picked up Yiyi and said, "After I leave, you stay with this sister here. Remember, don't be naughty! Don't cause trouble for her; be good!" Yiyi asked in her sweet voice, "What about my little sister?" Wang Chao remained silent; he couldn't bring himself to tell Yiyi that her little sister had already become a corpse.
Yiyi then said, "Uncle, you need to come back early."
"Don't worry," Wang Chao replied. "I will."
"Wang Chao?" He heard Yang Mengying's voice coming from beside him. As he turned his head, Yang Mengying's red lips were already pressed against his cheek. Wang Chao felt a bit embarrassed; although he had imagined this scene many times during their shared living days and had fantasized about sparking something with Yang Mengying, the suddenness of the moment made him feel like he was dreaming. He awkwardly cleared his throat twice.
"You must come back!" Yang Mengying leaned in close to Wang Chao's ear and whispered softly.
Wang Chao patted Yiyi's little head and said, "Don't worry."
…………
Wang Chao observed the entrance for a long time. When the group of zombies finally wandered off somewhere, he suddenly dashed out. His target was the mountain bike in the corner, which belonged to him. As soon as he ran out, the horde of zombies noticed him and surged toward him. While unlocking the bike with his keys, he cursed, "Damn it, here come the zombies! Is it only rich and handsome people who get to live? Ah, damn it! If I had a car, I would have bolted out of here already instead of fumbling with this lock!"
Suddenly, Wang Chao remembered a movie where people could start a car with just two wires. At that moment, he desperately wanted to know what those two wires were. Finally unlocking the bike, he hopped on and pedaled furiously. With the speed of those zombies, they were still far from catching up to him.
"Go eat shit! Still trying to chase me!" Wang Chao shouted as he rode, flipping them off. The gate of the community was not far away; in just a few seconds, he would be able to escape. But just then, a gatekeeper zombie suddenly charged out and blocked his path. Wang Chao nearly toppled over his bike in shock and quickly swerved, but the handlebars snagged on the zombie's clothing.
Wang Chao felt immense pressure. "Damn it! I told you to lose weight! You gatekeeper are nearly two hundred pounds—are you even human?" He cursed while pushing against the zombie with his arm.
To his surprise, the zombie's clothes were quite sturdy; he couldn't push it away after several attempts. Looking at the fat zombie's yellowed teeth made Wang Chao feel nauseous. He pulled out a kitchen knife from behind him and slashed at the zombie's clothing. The fat zombie immediately fell to the ground, rolling several times and knocking down many other zombies chasing behind.
"Damn it, it's like bowling!" Wang Chao shouted.
Wang Chao rode his bike back and forth on the street, thinking to himself that riding a bicycle was clearly much more convenient. If he were driving, he would have been stuck in traffic just after leaving the neighborhood, so riding a bike was definitely easier.
"The sun is out, I climb the hill, and when I reach the top, I want to sing..." Wang Chao sang as he pedaled along. The road was wide, and the Zombies weren't gathering too quickly, allowing him to enjoy some peace and quiet. Suddenly, he noticed something darting across the sidewalk on his left. Wang Chao was startled; it was moving so fast that he couldn't tell what it was.
Suddenly, the creature jumped up, and to his shock, it turned out to be a dog covered in blood!
