The largest wolf in the world measures three meters in length and stands at 1.1 meters tall at the shoulder, but the wolf that appeared before the Eastern Wind Ironclad clearly exceeded these dimensions. The Alpha Wolf had fur that was a pale gray, its complexion ghostly white, with a long snout and slanted triangular eyes that glowed with a faint green light. Its sharp teeth were bared in a low growl, and its powerful limbs suggested strength and agility, measuring nearly five meters in length and standing close to 1.5 meters tall at the shoulder. It loomed menacingly in front of the Eastern Wind Ironclad.
"Is it really a wolf?" Jackson Wang pressed his face against the window, his expression a mix of strange excitement.
"Oh no, it's a Mutated Wolf Pack. After humans and animals turned into Zombies, even animals have mutated. Since the Dark Moon, this world has become increasingly harsh. How are we supposed to survive?" Bai Zhen said worriedly.
"Damn it! I thought if there were no people, there wouldn't be Zombies. I never expected the animals to mutate too. This is just pushing me to improve myself! It's going to be even harder to catch them now; my food!" Jackson Wang lamented.
The tense atmosphere was instantly lightened by Jackson Wang's interruption.
Su Ruolan smiled knowingly. Qin Zhi Han picked up the walkie-talkie and calmly said, "The mountain roads are treacherous; everyone avoid using explosives. Let them feel the power of our Wolf Brigade."
Feeling ignored, the Alpha Wolf grew furious. Its ears flattened against its head as its eyes widened. It threw back its head and howled, sending a blade of wind slicing toward the Eastern Wind Ironclad. The other mutated wolves joined in the attack, working together—some charged at the vehicle with great force, trying to overturn it, while others used their sharp claws to tear at the roof and doors, attempting to claw their way inside.
The front of the armored vehicle quickly became covered in hardened steel, absorbing the impact of the attack and leaving a deep scratch on its surface. Jackson Wang suppressed his surging Heart's Blood and said seriously, "It's a Wind Type, peak level two."
"Leave it to me; you all handle the other wolves," Qin Zhi Han declared with determination.
Since the apocalypse began, humanity first fought against chaotic Zombies for two years, gradually awakening their Abilities and slowly establishing bases to adapt and survive. Three years into the apocalypse saw the emergence of the first Zombie cat, followed by reports from various places that animals were also beginning to turn into Zombies. At the same time, Zombies transformed from humans began exhibiting Abilities as well, leading to increasingly fierce conflicts between humans and Zombies. Some bases disbanded or were completely wiped out. Four years into the apocalypse brought about the Dark Moon; not only was humanity suffering greatly, but real events surfaced where many could not bear the immense psychological pressure and chose to commit suicide with their families. Moreover, the Zombie Realm was also affected—Zombies and Zombie animals became sluggish and slow to react, even entering states of hibernation, leading to a relative period of peace between humans and Zombies.
However, since the apocalypse began, aside from encountering an unknown-level Sound System Zombie, humanity had only known of high-level two Zombies as their highest classification until now. The mutated wolf before them shattered historical records. Considering that animals of equivalent levels possess combat power exceeding that of humans by half a tier, this wolf was equivalent to a human tier three Ability user. Currently, there was only one individual known as the strongest Ability user—a lightning-type tier three high-level.
Su Ruolan had heard tales of this strongest individual but had never seen them in person. She was unaware whether what she witnessed during her last life-and-death moment—seeing lightning strike a Zombie—was merely an illusion or something that truly happened. Even though Qin Zhi Han possessed dual-type Abilities, he did not fit the characteristics of this strongest individual. The situation was dire this time around.
Qin Zhi Han raised the Platinum Golden Eagle, aiming directly at the eyes of the mutated Alpha Wolf. With swift precision, he fired a series of bullets while simultaneously getting out of the vehicle, closing in on the Alpha Wolf.
Although it had never encountered bullets before, the Alpha Wolf instinctively sensed danger and dodged to the side. As one moved forward and the other sideways, their positions exchanged. Behind the Alpha Wolf was Su Ruolan, poised to attack.
Qin Zhi Han shook his head slightly and shouted, "Come on, let me see what you've got." He then raised his gun again and shot at the Alpha Wolf, this time aiming for its lower body while continuing to run forward.
The Alpha Wolf was instantly enraged. Ignoring Su Ruolan and the other wolves behind it, it unleashed a massive wind blade that chased after Qin Zhi Han.
Su Ruolan immediately understood Qin Zhi Han's intentions and followed closely behind at a safe distance.
Qin Zhi Han ran desperately forward, using the winding mountain path to awkwardly dodge the wind blades. His clothes were continuously shredded, and countless small wounds began to ooze blood.
The Alpha Wolf closed in on Qin Zhi Han. Su Ruolan launched an Ice Spike from behind, as thick as an adult's arm, whistling through the air toward the wolf. Sensing the threat from behind, the Alpha Wolf quickly dodged, glancing back before continuing its pursuit of Qin Zhi Han. After all, this man had acted so despicably; it had to take him down first.
As Su Ruolan created distractions, the Alpha Wolf momentarily paused in its pursuit, giving Qin Zhi Han a brief moment to catch his breath. The chase continued between them—a man and a wolf. In moments of crisis for Qin Zhi Han, Su Ruolan would attack from behind the Alpha Wolf. When the Alpha Wolf became furious and turned to chase her instead, Qin Zhi Han would strike at its lower body from behind. This back-and-forth allowed them to distance themselves from the pack by several dozen kilometers. The Alpha Wolf gradually realized their strategy and slowed its pace, stopping on the mountain path as both sides found themselves in a stalemate.
In the early morning mountains, although the sky was gradually brightening, the moon still hung in the starry sky. The Alpha Wolf suddenly howled at the moon, its body swelling rapidly until its belly was as large as a drum.
"This is bad; it's about to unleash a powerful attack," both Qin Zhi Han and Su Ruolan sensed an unusual flow of air around them.
Centered around the Alpha Wolf, the air began to swirl rapidly. The airflow was drawn in from all directions towards it, gradually enveloping its form in a visible tornado.
"We can't let it unleash its full power." Qin Zhi Han gathered his energy, forming a massive hollow fireball between his hands. The edges of the fireball flickered with hints of lightning as he continued to compress it further. It grew larger and more solidified, transforming from a basin-sized sphere to one as big as a soccer ball.
Su Ruolan no longer held back her strength, fully concentrating on forming the Ice Spike, which grew larger and larger, approaching a meter in size.
Now it was a race against time to see which side could complete their attack faster.
The tornado finally roared in, towering at seven or eight meters high, but it destroyed everything in its path. The mountain road cracked, the concrete layer was lifted from the ground, boulders tumbled down the mountainside, and trees were snapped in half, some even uprooted and flying through the air. All of this rushed towards Qin Zhi Han and Su Ruolan with a fierce intent to kill.
At the critical moment, Qin Zhi Han's fireball and Su Ruolan's Ice Spike had both taken shape and collided with the eye of the tornado. With a loud bang, the energy from all three sources created a massive shockwave that collapsed the area around them. The two humans and one wolf were sent plummeting towards the cliff. Qin Zhi Han was very close to Alpha Wolf, facing the enemy head-on and taking most of the impact. He was severely injured, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth as he fell rapidly. Su Ruolan landed above him; seeing his condition, she quickly pulled out a nylon rope from her backpack that connected to another space. She wrapped one end around her wrist and swiftly tossed the other end towards Qin Zhi Han, wrapping it around his waist. With a strong pull, she swung him towards the treetops nearby. Her large movement increased her descent speed, allowing her to surpass Qin Zhi Han.
Just as Qin Zhi Han landed on the treetop and prepared to pull Su Ruolan up, a sudden wind blade severed the nylon rope.
Although Alpha Wolf was individually stronger than both Qin Zhi Han and Su Ruolan, Su Ruolan had reached high-level Tier 2 while Qin Zhi Han was at peak Tier 2. Even with their combined efforts against him, they struggled to gain an advantage and ended up injured. Seeing them help each other and about to escape made Alpha Wolf feel resentful; he formed a wind blade to cut off their connection. If he couldn't kill them, he would take away his woman instead—let him suffer for trying to sever my lineage, he thought bitterly.
Su Ruolan was swept down by the final cyclone created by Alpha Wolf, locking eyes with Qin Zhi Han. The last image she saw was of his anxious yet frustrated expression as he reached out for her but grasped nothing.
A drop of water fell on her face; then another followed. Su Ruolan jolted awake, immediately alert and ready for battle.
"You’re awake," a familiar Mechanical Voice echoed.
Su Ruolan looked around and realized she was in a familiar space; this wasn’t her own space but had subtle differences—it was twice as large as before.
"When you advanced to high-level Tier 2 earlier, your space also met the upgrade conditions. However, due to environmental constraints at that time, I had to suppress it. This time you were injured and unconscious again; I had no choice but to absorb all remaining Core energy to heal you. I couldn’t suppress it any longer and had to take the risk of upgrading. Fortunately, during the upgrade process, the energy became quite volatile; otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to suppress that wolf," Reset explained about Su Ruolan's condition after she fainted.
"Then did Alpha Wolf enter this space too?" Su Ruolan asked in surprise.
"Yes, although I don't want to admit it, that man is quite impressive. In the end, a bolt of lightning struck that Alpha Wolf. A bit of its heart's blood was consumed by you. When I summoned you, it came along as well. However, that man is seriously injured and needs to recuperate; otherwise, he will be left with lasting issues," Reset lamented.
Su Ruolan was shocked. She had known Qin Zhi Han for a short time, yet he had saved her multiple times, and this bond was profound and unforgettable. She still did not know the extent of his injuries or how she would repay him in the future.
"Your wolf has come in; where is it now?" Su Ruolan asked.
"It’s confined in that corner. What do you plan to do with it? A contract? Although it has injured you, its strength is considerable. I haven’t transformed yet, so it can protect you from outside," Reset explained as a previously murky corner of the space became clear. Inside lay a heavily injured Silver Gray Wolf, lying on the ground. Despite its weakened state, its eyes still held a fierce glint.
"Reset, how many contracts can I form?" Su Ruolan asked, intrigued to learn that she could actually contract animals.
"Currently just one: one soul contract and one master-servant contract. As your strength increases and I continue to level up, the number of contracts will grow," Reset said proudly.
"I will definitely work hard," Su Ruolan replied, feeling very happy to hear that Reset could also transform. After experiencing several life-and-death situations, she had come to trust Reset completely and hoped for his continued improvement. "So how do I sign the master-servant contract?"
"It's simple. As long as it presents you with a drop of its blood and vows lifelong loyalty to you, you can establish a master-servant contract in your consciousness. "We wolves are a noble race and will never become slaves to humans," the Silver Gray Wolf glared at Su Ruolan with hatred.
Su Ruolan was startled to discover a youthful boy's voice in her mind. "Reset, what's going on?"
"It has now formed a half contract with you. In this space, you can sense its thoughts. Even if you want to set it free, it's impossible. Without the contract, I will kill it. Our secret cannot be exposed," Reset said mischievously.
Su Ruolan felt a bit awkward. Looking at the Silver Gray Wolf before her, she spoke sincerely, "Submit to me, and I promise you won't be a slave. You will be a partner, someone trustworthy, the kind of relationship where you can rely on each other's backs."
"Humans are deceitful; I don't believe anyone could be that kind-hearted," the Silver Gray Wolf replied skeptically.
"You have no choice but to trust me now," Su Ruolan insisted.
"I will not submit; I'd rather die," the Silver Gray Wolf howled lowly.
"You are still young. Don't you have unfulfilled wishes? Are you really willing to just accept death? I promise you, as long as you don't betray me, after five years, I will dissolve the contract and return your freedom," Su Ruolan said earnestly, gazing at the Silver Gray Wolf.
As if recalling something, the Silver Gray Wolf fell silent for a moment before resolutely stating, "I believe in those who do not betray their partners. I will form a contract with you, and I hope you keep your promise to set me free in five years."
Su Ruolan and the Silver Gray Wolf completed the oath ceremony.
"Welcome, my partner. I am Su Ruolan."
