What entered was not who I expected, but a tall, handsome man who looked like someone difficult to approach.
As soon as Bai Jiaren saw him, she hid behind me, but the man didn’t give her a moment to escape. He stepped in and immediately spotted her.
With a swift motion, he reached out and pulled Bai Jiaren from behind me.
Bai Jiaren trembled in fear, but the man showed no sign of pity.
I thought to myself, "This man is Chen Luyuan."
He slowly leaned closer to Bai Jiaren and said, "My dear, you’re being disobedient again. Disobedient people will be punished. Why won’t you listen to me?"
Bai Jiaren didn’t dare to speak; she just wore a pained expression on her face. It seemed this man had a long-standing reputation for being intimidating.
As I watched him grow increasingly agitated, Feng Yu spoke up, "Chen Luyuan, handle your family matters at home. This isn’t a place for you to control your wife."
Upon hearing this, Chen Luyuan immediately shifted back to a more normal demeanor. "I wouldn’t dare disregard the Master’s words," he replied.
Then Chen Luyuan pulled Bai Jiaren aside. I noticed her looking at me with pleading eyes, just as I was about to speak up when Feng Yu interjected again, "Yan Xi, are you happy? Are you happy to see Xiao Xuanxuan revived?"
I looked at him with an incredulous expression. "Why are you lying to me?"
Feng Yu widened his eyes innocently. "I haven’t lied to you. Why would Yan Xi say such a thing?"
"You..."
I thought carefully and realized that he hadn’t actually lied to me about anything significant; the names were real, and he had merely concealed his identity. He had never truly deceived me...
I was momentarily speechless.
All I could hear was his light chuckle, followed by, "You see, I told you, I never lied to you. It's just that you overthought things."
Mu Xuanche, realizing I couldn't win against Feng Yu, spoke up, "Feng Yu, let's not beat around the bush. Why did you call us here today?"
Feng Yu smirked slightly. "Since Xuan Wang is so straightforward, I suppose I should be as well."
"I know you're looking for the Dragon Pen. I need you to do something for me, and if I'm satisfied with it, I'll give you the Dragon Pen!"
At that moment, Yu Qinghua happened to open the door and overheard Feng Yu's words. She immediately interjected, "Feng Yu, you can't do this; that's for me!"
Feng Yu narrowed his eyes, a palpable pressure filling the room.
"You can take it back right now."
Yu Qinghua stammered, "No, that's not what I meant. Feng Yu, please don't act like this."
Feng Yu fell silent.
Mu Xuanche asked, "What do you need us to do?"
"Hah."
Feng Yu chuckled lightly before continuing, "The first thing is to help Chen Luyuan find the true culprit who killed his daughter and eliminate them! His daughter died at the construction site. I'm waiting for your good news."
Mu Xuanche replied solemnly, "We will get it done. Please don't go back on your word."
Feng Yu smiled, "Of course."
Mu Xuanche and I got out of the car.
In front of us was an abandoned construction site, with several warning signs standing tall at the entrance. Cement mixed with weeds and gravel was haphazardly dumped along the sides of the road. Shovels and hard hats had been tossed aside in a pile. A snake skin bag and a rain cover were crumpled into shapes resembling shredded paper, buried in the rubble.
The long-abandoned site exuded a strong scent of dust and dampness from deep within.
From the outside, we could see that the basic framework of the building had already been constructed, with bricks scattered chaotically around. A long line stretched from one end to the base of the building. According to residents living nearby, this building was halfway completed when terrifying rumors began to circulate from somewhere. Occasionally, at midnight, one could hear beast-like howls coming from the rooftop.
Eventually, fewer workers were willing to come here for work; even if higher wages were offered, no one wanted to take the job, and thus the project gradually fell into neglect.
However, it was clear that this foundation had not been abandoned for long.
The surrounding residents were not very familiar with this place; they only knew that sometimes distant voices and the roar of truck engines echoed from this abandoned site. Yet whenever someone came to check it out, they found no one there.
Indeed, as others had said, the construction site was abandoned. As we stepped onto the muddy ground and ventured inside, there were no obvious clues to be found.
Like many idle construction sites, there were numerous steel pipes and concrete bricks scattered about. In one corner lay heaps of discarded household waste.
Aside from the sound of our footsteps and breathing, the surroundings felt eerily quiet.
As we walked toward the base of the building, it was not difficult to see that someone had once lived in this empty underground passage.
A stove made of bricks was piled up, with some ashes and straw still embedded within. Newspapers from an unknown era had burned into black clumps and were carelessly tossed aside. In another corner stood beer bottles with their labels torn off.
Against the wall were some mats and a few tattered blankets. My hands brushed against them, feeling a thick layer of dust swirling in the air.
This is where the workers usually live. In a ceramic bowl, there was a cigarette butt extinguished halfway.
The place was not very tidy; on the floor lay food that had been carelessly thrown away, rotting and turning black. It looked as if someone had stumbled upon something unexpected and hurriedly fled.
Mu Xuanche surveyed the surroundings but seemed to find nothing particularly useful. Suddenly, he sniffed the air and said to me, "This place seems to have a strong sense of hostility."
"What does that mean?" I asked, glancing around. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed something moving beneath a mat that had been left undisturbed. My first thought was a rat, but it seemed larger than that.
I walked over and lifted the mat.
A strong smell of mold hit me, mixed with sand and dust. Suddenly, I heard a rustling sound nearby. Opening my eyes, I struggled to describe the black creature crawling on the ground.
It resembled both a cockroach and a cricket, but it was enormous, completely black, with two antennae protruding from its head that looked like snail tentacles covered in sticky substance.
My scalp tingled with fear, and I couldn't help but scream, throwing the mat aside and jumping back to grab Mu Xuanche's sleeve.
A swarm of large black insects emerged from a hole, their furry heads poking out. Upon closer inspection, I could see their snow-white teeth glinting with cold light.
"What are those things?" I trembled. Mu Xuanche remained silent, only patting my hand reassuringly before signaling me to let go and slowly approach.
Those giant bugs seemed very skittish; when they saw Mu Xuanche coming closer, they scattered like birds taking flight. They slipped into the gaps between the boards and walls, finding refuge just like cockroaches do.
I didn't see how Mu Xuanche acted; all I noticed was his fingers curling like dragon claws as he swiftly reached for one spot. By the time I realized what had happened, he already held a massive black insect in his hand.
I felt a wave of nausea and stuck out my tongue. Mu Xuanche glanced at me with amusement before crouching down to examine the insect closely. At that moment, the creature began to struggle violently, and a pair of translucent wings sprang up from its back with a loud "pop." Mu Xuanche was momentarily caught off guard as it escaped from his grasp.
"What is that?" I couldn't help but ask.
"I'm not quite sure," Mu Xuanche shook his head. "I only know that it's some kind of insect that has mutated by absorbing the malice from this place. To understand it fully, we would need to conduct a thorough investigation here."
I let out a soft "oh" and took out a tissue for him. He wiped his hands and then we walked together to another area.
In the corner, there seemed to be a staircase, along with an elevator left over from the building's construction. I wasn't sure if the power here was still operational, but it felt like there was something strange lurking in some hidden corner.
To avoid any mishaps, Mu Xuanche and I decided to take the stairs.
The lime powder scattered across the ground and the ashes lingering in the air made me involuntarily sneeze. Mu Xuanche glanced at me with concern, and I offered him a simple smile to reassure him that I was fine.
As I stepped onto the stone slab of the second floor, I couldn't tell if it was my imagination, but I seemed to hear a "crack" sound beneath my feet, followed by a chilling "creak" as if the wooden boards were hollow.
