I stopped chewing the apple, rolled my eyes slightly, and then stood up. "Alright, Boss Wang, you better take care of yourself."
I was about to leave.
Boss Wang steeled himself and suddenly stood up to block my way. "Sister Gu, I... I really need your help to deal with this female ghost! I'll pay whatever it takes."
I sat back down on the sofa again; I had only intended to scare him a little.
With a stern expression, I said, "Why drag this out? Just admit it and be done with it."
Boss Wang looked miserable. "Sigh, please don't hold my past mistakes against me. I have no face left to show myself now."
I raised an eyebrow and glared at him. "You know it's a guilty conscience, yet you still dare to do it? If you've done something wrong, you should own up to it. Otherwise, what kind of man are you?"
My words were laced with obvious sarcasm, but Boss Wang could only helplessly nod, looking somewhat embarrassed. "Yes, yes, Sister Gu is right."
I arched an eyebrow. "What are you still dawdling for? Stop talking nonsense and tell me what you've done wrong!"
Upon hearing my urging, Boss Wang quickly replied, "Well, the truth is, she was my ex-girlfriend. We met at a banquet; Xiao Xuanxuan comes from a good family and has always been spoiled. I'm different; I’ve worked my way up from nothing and can't compare to her background. Our personalities didn't match either; she pursued me, and I hesitated for a long time before agreeing. Later, even her father mentioned it to me, so I thought, why not give it a try?"
At this point, Boss Wang showed a look of regret as he continued, "I never expected Xiao Xuanxuan would be so clingy and domineering. As a man with my own career and social obligations, it became overwhelming! Ever since we got together, everything seemed to go wrong; several business deals fell through. I started getting annoyed with her and wanted to break up, but she refused and caused a scene at my company and home, making me lose face. In the end, I had no choice but to reconcile with her. I warned her that she needed to change her bad habits or I'd break up with her again."
He gave a bitter smile before continuing. "At first, she did tone it down a bit; I slowly stopped hating her and even started liking her. But within six months, her true nature resurfaced and she reverted to her old ways. This time I couldn't tolerate it anymore and proposed breaking up again. She still wouldn't agree. Fortunately for me, I discovered evidence of her cheating with someone else—and she was pregnant too. You all know how that ended; she committed suicide."
After listening to his story, I finished my apple and tossed the core aside. Wiping my mouth, I said to him, "I understand now. So you're saying this woman was so obsessed that she believed you were responsible for her death?"
Boss Wang hesitated for a moment before answering. "That might be part of it; I'm not sure. I'm just stating the facts."
I exchanged glances with Mu Xuanche; we both understood that Boss Wang didn't seem to be lying based on his demeanor while speaking.
I slapped my thigh and stood up. "Alright, Boss Wang, I've got the information I need. We'll come back tomorrow."
Boss Wang hurriedly tried to keep us there. "Hey! Sister Gu! What if she comes back while you're gone? That won't do! Stay here; I've got plenty of guest rooms! Choose any room you like!"
I turned back to look at Mu Xuanche and Bai Qiling for their opinions. Mu Xuanche had an expression that said he was fine either way while Bai Qiling shrugged and spread his hands in response: "It's up to you."
I looked at Boss Wang's eager expression and forced a smile. "Alright, we'll stay here."
Then I turned to Bai Qiling. "Bai Qiling, the daunting task of going back to the hotel to get the luggage is now yours. Don't let the organization down, okay?"
Bai Qiling rolled his eyes at me, took the car keys from Mu Xuanche, and walked out.
I cheerfully took Mu Xuanche's hand and headed to choose a room.
On the second floor, the first room was the largest I had seen during my stay here. I guessed it might be Boss Wang's room, so I asked, "Boss Wang, is this your room?"
Boss Wang had a look of discomfort on his face. "This... is Xiao Xuanxuan's room."
Seeing my expression, he quickly added, "She hasn't come back to stay here since we broke up. This room is very clean; I even invited a master to perform a ritual for it. It's fine."
I scoffed. "A master?"
Realizing how that sounded, he felt a bit embarrassed. "Of course, those masters are not as skilled as you guys..."
Mu Xuanche walked in to take a look, opened the curtains, and then turned to us. "That doesn't seem right; Xiao Xuanxuan often comes back to stay here."
Boss Wang's legs seemed to give way beneath him, and he couldn't muster a smile anymore.
Mu Xuanche touched the windowsill and the pillow. "Would you really open the window in this seldom-used room when you're home alone? Would you occasionally come over to sleep here and leave an indentation in the pillow?"
Boss Wang was genuinely frightened now. He quickly backed out of the room and said, "You two should choose another room; I'll lock this one up."
Mu Xuanche glanced at me, not wanting to continue this line of conversation, so we stepped out together.
Boss Wang hurriedly led us to another area to look at more rooms.
In the end, we chose a room diagonally opposite Boss Wang's, just in case Xiao Xuanxuan came back looking for him unexpectedly.
We also arranged for Bai Qiling's room to be next door to ours. Now we just had to wait for Bai Qiling to bring over the luggage.
It was already half past eleven when Boss Wang apologized to us, saying, "I have to work tomorrow, so I'm really sorry. I need to get some sleep now; feel free to make yourselves at home in this house."
With that, he smiled and returned to his room.
I turned to look around; there wasn't much to explore, so I decided to wait for Bai Qiling to return in the living room with Mu Xuanche.
Once downstairs, Mu Xuanche sat down on the sofa, and I joined him.
He wrapped an arm around me and leaned in close, his warm breath brushing against my ear, making it flush with heat.
Then he whispered, "Don't look up; Junfeng Wang is watching us from upstairs."
I suddenly snapped out of my daze.
Junfeng Wang was observing us? What was there to observe?
With this question in mind, I raised my head and shot a questioning glance at Mu Xuanche. He chuckled softly and replied in my ear, "He wants to see if we truly believe what he said."
I was taken aback and leaned against Mu Xuanche, exclaiming, "Is he still trying to deceive us?"
"No, not at all. Everything he said is true," Mu Xuanche replied with a serious expression.
"Then... I still don't understand why."
Mu Xuanche lightly smirked and whispered, "Because he has concealed the most crucial part."
I rolled my eyes in his embrace and said, "He really is a scumbag."
Mu Xuanche just smiled while holding me, choosing not to respond.
It wasn't until fifteen minutes past midnight that Bai Qiling finally returned.
He pulled a large suitcase and another bag from the trunk of his car and brought them into the living room.
I hurried over to pull the box from Bai Qiling's hands; I preferred to handle my own things.
As I stood beside him, I noticed some bruises on his waist when he bent down. I asked, "Bai Qiling, what happened to your waist?"
Mu Xuanche also came over at the sound of my voice and lifted the hem of Bai Qiling's shirt. To our surprise, a large area of bruising was revealed.
Frowning, Mu Xuanche asked, "What happened while you were getting your luggage? How did you get hurt?"
Bai Qiling looked a bit embarrassed and brushed down his shirt. "I was ambushed by an unknown creature on my way back. Just as I was driving and noticed the car seemed to be having trouble, I checked the fuel gauge and saw it was still quite full. So, I got out to see what was wrong, and as soon as I stepped out of the car, I was attacked... I ended up crashing into a tree."
Mu Xuanche's expression turned serious as he said sternly, "This is definitely not an accident. Whoever hurt you is certainly connected to Xiao Xuanxuan. We need to find out who it is."
