Returning to that place, since it had been confirmed that the location was a hidden pit, it was highly likely that the Ming Tomb was situated there. After all, such coincidences were rare; we had stumbled upon a hidden pit for no apparent reason.
Yan Shengwei cautiously surveyed the surroundings when suddenly, the turtle shouted in his mind, "Don't go to the right! There's a huge Resentment over there!"
Hearing the turtle's warning, Yan Shengwei hurried to inform Mu Xuanche to be careful.
Mu Xuanche nodded in acknowledgment and then proceeded toward the right side. Bai Qiling and I followed behind him.
Yan Shengwei glanced around, feeling uneasy, and decided to follow along as well.
The turtle grew angry again, its voice piercing through Yan Shengwei's mind as it yelled, "You're not listening to me again! If you go down from there later, you'll regret it!"
Yan Shengwei had long become immune to the turtle's warnings and paid it no mind.
Meanwhile, Mu Xuanche led us further into the desolate landscape.
As dusk deepened, my fear intensified. Being in a graveyard already made me uneasy, and with nightfall approaching, the moonlight cast eerie shadows on the surrounding trees like messengers from a ghostly realm.
Mu Xuanche carefully examined the environment and found no entrance anywhere.
Yan Shengwei seemed to notice this too and ran over to Mu Xuanche. "Big Brother, I have something that can break through tunnels. Should I go get it now? You can help me out a bit?"
Mu Xuanche nodded in agreement.
Before long, Yan Shengwei returned with the items and explained their usage in detail. The two of them then began their work.
"Why aren't Yan Shengwei and Bai Qiling doing anything?"
One of them looked as frail as a chick, while the other clearly wasn't built for strength. Besides, there were only two tools available, and it was most efficient for the big guy and Mu Xuanche to do the heavy lifting.
They had dug three tunnels, which from the outside didn't look much different; it was just that the deeper they went, some white bones began to surface.
Yan Shengwei observed for a moment before suddenly shouting, "Oh my God!"
He quickly rushed over to stop Mu Xuanche and the big guy, his eyes wide with urgency. "Big Brother, stop digging! This is a Direct Burial Pit! The resentment here is immense; it's even more ominous than inside a tomb!"
Mu Xuanche straightened up, and the big guy halted his work.
I was confused again. Why all this fuss? Earlier, we just found any hole on that mountain road and went right in!
So I asked, "What's the big deal?"
Yan Shengwei grimaced. "I don't know why we're so unlucky. I was just watching for a bit, and then it hit me that I also have to deal with a Direct Burial Pit. I'm pretty sure this place is nine times out of ten a Direct Burial Pit. Just now, the turtle threatened me not to come here, but I didn't take it seriously at the time. Now it seems there really is a problem."
I pressed further, "What exactly is a Direct Burial Pit? Sounds like a well?"
Yan Shengwei patiently explained, "In ancient times, most miners were prisoners. Back then, there was no medical care for high-intensity labor, so many died. Those who died while repairing tombs were often just tossed in here."
A chill breeze swept through, making me shiver.
Suddenly, in the distance, there were flickering lights. I huddled closer to Mu Xuanche and looked up to ask, "Mu Xuanche, what is that over there?"
Mu Xuanche squinted his eyes and then quickly pulled me back, holding me tightly. Bai Qiling, seeing this, also grabbed Yan Shengwei and ran towards us, while the tall man was unnecessary to mention.
What could it be? Mu Xuanche didn’t answer me, and at that moment, I felt it was not the right time to ask more questions.
When we retreated back to the car, Mu Xuanche made a shushing gesture to me and then stood quietly in place.
I remained still as well, just standing silently.
Before long, a large group of people approached. A wave of suspicion rose in my heart—who would come here in the middle of the night? This was the outskirts of Ying County!
I didn’t ponder for too long before I got my answer.
Those figures were not people at all; they were Zombies.
However, these Zombies lacked self-awareness and merely walked around mechanically.
To prevent me from getting scared, Mu Xuanche covered my eyes with his hand.
I silently counted the seconds in my mind; it seemed like three or four minutes had passed when the sound of the Zombies' footsteps gradually faded away.
At that moment, a voice suddenly called out, "Friends, have you lost someone? I saw a girl over there. If you don’t hurry, she will die."
"Who?! Who's talking?!"
I forcefully removed Mu Xuanche's hand and saw a thin man, looking to be in his forties, dressed in shabby clothing that belonged to a minority group.
Gravekeeper? The term flashed through my mind; I remembered that this group was not to be trifled with.
Before Mu Xuanche could ask, Bai Qiling suddenly interjected anxiously, "May I ask where you are from? Are there others here?"
The man pointed to the location of the Direct Burial Pit we had discovered earlier, then spoke in slightly awkward Mandarin, "I just passed by there while guiding the corpses and found someone in need of help. But I can't disturb them; I thought you might be able to assist her."
Initially, I had a very negative impression of Gravekeepers. They spent their days with corpses, and their minds gradually darkened; such individuals could hardly be considered normal humans, as their hearts were long since unhealthy.
However, this Gravekeeper gave me a different feeling. He had discovered someone in need of help while on his way to guide the dead.
It seemed this person was quite kind-hearted.
Without pausing for breath after finishing his sentence, the Gravekeeper left.
I looked up at Mu Xuanche and asked, "If what that Gravekeeper said is true, should we go take a look?"
Mu Xuanche shook his head. "His words can't be trusted. Didn't you hear Yan Shengwei say that place is a Direct Burial Pit? The resentment there runs deep. We barely escaped earlier; if the Gravekeeper passed through with a group of Zombies, who knows what might happen if we go there now?"
At that moment, Bai Qiling stepped forward resolutely. "Mu Xuanche, I'm going over."
Mu Xuanche furrowed his brow. "What do you want? I've never seen you so meddlesome before."
Bai Qiling suddenly showed a hint of pain on her face and then spoke softly, "The person from the Gravekeeper should be Shangguan Chenxi."
"What?"
I exclaimed in surprise.
Bai Qiling covered her eyes with her hand and continued, "I saw her last night. She came, and she saw me, but when I noticed her, I turned and went into the hotel. So I'm afraid the person at the Direct Burial Pit is her."
I felt a sense of difficulty for her. "This..."
Seeing my expression, Bai Qiling said, "Wait for me a moment. I'll bring her back right away."
Mu Xuanche stopped her and calmly said, "I'll go with you."
At that moment, I couldn't possibly voice any objections; it was a matter of life and death.
I knew that although the Burial Pit was filled with Resentment, Mu Xuanche and Bai Qiling would definitely be fine. Both of them possessed deep spiritual power, and these ordinary Resentments posed no threat to them.
Before, I had hesitated to stay there only because I was worried it would delay our entry into the tomb. But now, if that woman was indeed Shangguan Chenxi, we had to go save her. There was no way around it, even if it meant wasting time.
Yan Shengwei and I stayed quietly in the car while the burly man sat silently in the passenger seat.
I occasionally glanced at my phone to check the time, and the minutes ticked by slowly. It was already two in the morning, and they still hadn't returned, which made me feel a bit anxious.
Yan Shengwei had also been staring in the direction they had left. Suddenly, he spoke up, "Sister-in-law, Big Brother Bai is back, and it looks like Brother Bai is carrying a woman on his back?"
I looked up and saw that they had indeed returned! I opened the car door and hurried over to them. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the woman Brother Bai was carrying was Shangguan Chenxi.
Mu Xuanche silently pulled me back into the car. The big man offered me the front passenger seat while he took a seat in the back.
Bai Qiling opened the car door but remained silent as well.
Seeing that everyone was quiet, Yan Shengwei tightly shut his mouth and said nothing.
