Yan Shengwei stared with wide eyes, imagining himself as a star. His leader exuded an aura of dominance, and he wondered if he would become just as formidable after completing his inheritance.
Suddenly, a turtle emerged and struck him on the head: "Stop dreaming! You're just a hopeless loser."
Yan Shengwei had initially thought the turtle was an impressive being, but over time, he realized it lacked any real power. He used to regard the turtle with the same reverence he held for Mu Xuanche, but now the turtle's status had plummeted. It was stuck in his mind, unable to escape; if it didn't pass on its legacy to him, who else could it?
So now, he felt no fear of it. He had developed immunity to its words. So what if he was a bit foolish? He was just an ordinary person!
Yan Shengwei scoffed disdainfully and then stripped off his clothes to sleep.
After Mu Xuanche took me back to the room, he revealed a smile that reminded me of the past. My heart raced at the sight. I tightened my clothes and said, "Don't get carried away; we have important matters to attend to!"
I could easily guess what this guy wanted to do, and my face flushed as I stepped back, trying to avoid him.
Mu Xuanche smirked, his lips curling into a charming grin. "It seems like Husband hasn't satisfied Wife in a long time."
His voice dropped low at the end of his sentence, deliberately enticing me.
Every time he tried to seduce me, he spoke in that magnetic tone. Damn it, I always found myself falling into his trap willingly.
I clung to the last shred of my sanity and gently pushed him away. "Don't come any closer! We might run out of time."
I slowly backed away but didn’t notice when I reached the edge of the bed and fell onto it.
Mu Xuanche's smile widened. "Wife may be refusing me with her words, but isn't this action truly an invitation?"
My face turned crimson as I used my arms to block his imposing figure from leaning over me. Embarrassed, I turned my head away. "We really don't have time; I just stumbled and didn't mean to invite you!"
Mu Xuanche firmly pushed my arms aside and pressed his body against mine. His warm breath brushed against my ear as he breathed softly. I felt myself nearly burning up.
The sensation of warmth lingered near my ear as Mu Xuanche took advantage of my distraction and let my clothes fall to the floor.
His magnetic, deep voice softly echoed in my ear, "If I can make it, I will. If not, let Shangguan Chenxi wait!"
I felt wronged; he always made me feel embarrassed. So I replied, "You only think about yourself every time."
Mu Xuanche stopped what he was doing and looked into my eyes with a wicked smile. "Doesn't Wife feel happy every time? That's Husband's fault. Husband needs to work harder."
I couldn't really argue with him; I had no right to stop him.
I had originally thought he was the cold, taciturn type, but once we were in bed, I realized how eloquent he could be. I wondered if he was just putting on an act most of the time.
Besides, we were practically an old married couple now, having had children together, so there was no need for any pretense. I let him be.
Fortunately, he understood that there were still things to do later and showed some restraint. After he finished, he held me close and buried his head in my neck for a moment before getting up to get dressed.
By the time we both finished getting ready and stepped outside, Bai Qiling was leaning against the hotel corridor wall on a phone call. From his tone and content, it seemed he was speaking with Shangguan Chenxi.
"I'm sorry, I still have some business to wrap up here. Could you please wait a bit longer?"
When he turned and saw Mu Xuanche and me coming out, a teasing smile appeared on his face. He changed his tone on the phone, saying, "Just finished up. Sorry for keeping you waiting; I'll be there soon."
As soon as Bai Qiling hung up the phone, he walked toward us.
Seeing his smile made it clear that there would be no good news ahead.
Sure enough, he said with a smirk, "Wow, that took a while. Mu Xuanche, you really are something! How about it? Is that enough? If not, I can wait longer. I've already waited quite a bit; you two can continue if you want; I'm fine with it."
Honestly, seeing Bai Qiling's refined and handsome face break into a slightly lewd grin was hard for me to handle. Not to mention that he had nothing nice to say.
Mu Xuanche noticed my embarrassment and said, "Alright, enough joking around. Let's get down to business."
So the three of us—me, Mu Xuanche, and Bai Qiling—headed to the restaurant designated by Shangguan Chenxi. Mu Xuanche and I intentionally lagged behind, preparing to disguise ourselves and not join them directly.
The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere, designed in a natural style that felt fresh and inviting. There were no private rooms; instead, the space was divided by plants that provided a sense of privacy.
I saw Bai Qiling smiling as he approached. The two of them took their seats, and Mu Xuanche and I chose the adjacent booth, making it easy for us to eavesdrop.
Bai Qiling not only wore a sharp, tailored suit but also brought a gift for Shangguan Chenxi. It wasn't very expensive—just a delicate collarbone necklace adorned with red crystals.
Such a gift wouldn’t seem out of place and came across as generous.
After all, they had only just met. Establishing a good first impression was crucial.
Once we ordered our food, I focused on listening in while Mu Xuanche idly played with my hair.
I could hear Bai Qiling say, “I’m sorry for being late; I’ve been quite busy with work and couldn’t delay any longer. I brought this gift to apologize for my tardiness to the beautiful lady.”
Shangguan Chenxi responded graciously, “It’s alright; after all, men prioritize their careers. Dining can happen anytime. Even if we can’t meet today, there will be other opportunities. You’re too kind, Mr. Bai.”
Bai Qiling chuckled lightly, “Yes, Sister Shangguan. We can arrange to meet again in the future, but please do accept this gift; it’s my sincere gesture.”
Shangguan Chenxi shyly accepted the gift. It was from Bai Qiling, and it was clear she wanted to open it right away. However, due to the Chinese custom of not opening gifts while the giver is present, she restrained herself.
Seeing her reaction, Bai Qiling understood and politely encouraged her, “Sister Shangguan, feel free to open it and see if you like it.”
Shangguan Chenxi hesitated before saying, “Mr. Bai’s thoughtfulness is already appreciated; no matter what you’ve given me, I would like it. Besides, it’s from you.”
In truth, Shangguan Chenxi's affection for Bai Qiling was quite evident. It was not easy for a girl to set aside her modesty for someone she liked.
She then unwrapped the beautifully packaged gift box. As soon as she opened it, she was captivated; what girl doesn’t love exquisite and beautiful things?
So Shangguan Chenxi exclaimed with delight, “Thank you so much! This collarbone necklace is stunning; I really love it!”
Bai Qiling maintained his gentlemanly demeanor and replied politely, “I’m glad you like it, Sister Shangguan.”
Shangguan Chenxi tucked her collarbone chain away, lifted her teacup, took a sip of water, and continued, "I wonder why Mr. Bai invited me out tonight."
Bai Qiling replied calmly, "Sister Bai, how about we order first? We can chat while we eat."
Shangguan Chenxi shyly responded, "Um."
Once the waiter finished taking their orders, Bai Qiling got straight to the point. "Sister Shangguan, we came this morning rather abruptly. You might not understand our true intentions; perhaps you only saw that we wanted to buy this Compass Fragment without knowing the reason. I'm here specifically to explain."
Seeing that Bai Qiling had arranged this meeting to discuss serious matters, Shangguan Chenxi felt a bit disappointed but still straightened her posture. "I indeed do not understand your intentions; please go ahead, Mr. Bai."
As I eavesdropped, I couldn't help but curse under my breath at Bai Qiling's words: "He really lacks romantic sense. Inviting someone out and bringing a gift should be about building rapport before discussing the Compass Fragment. This was supposed to be an opportunity to cultivate feelings! Men really have no understanding of romance!"
Mu Xuanche listened with a mix of amusement and exasperation. Was this a criticism of Bai Qiling or was he included in it as well?
It seemed his wife's resentment was quite evident; she took the chance to mock Bai Qiling along with him.
