Yan Shengwei casually wrapped his arm around Mu Xuanche's, saying, "Big Brother, you all seem capable. Everyone who came in with me is dead now. Let me stick with you; your team looks like it could use someone like me."
Mu Xuanche had actually waited for him to approach because he wanted him to join. Now that Yan Shengwei had brought it up himself, it was even better. He couldn't be bothered to mention it.
With a noncommittal "Hmm," Mu Xuanche fell silent.
Yan Shengwei also stopped talking and began rummaging through his backpack.
Bai Qiling, finding Yan Shengwei amusing, said, "Why don't you ask me my name?"
Yan Shengwei glanced at him and replied casually, "You look so weak; what can you do? With that strong guy next to you, it's obvious you're just a sidekick. You're not an important person, so why should I bother knowing your name?"
Bai Qiling was at a loss whether to laugh or cry; it was the first time someone considered him unimportant.
He teased back, "My name is Bai Qiling. Just telling you now so that if you get hurt later and want to survive, you'll know who to look for."
Upon hearing this, Yan Shengwei stopped searching for items and approached with a grin. "Brother Bai, from what you just said, you're a doctor?"
Bai Qiling couldn't help but laugh; this guy was truly a character.
The four of them set off on their journey. Along the way, Mu Xuanche learned more about Yan Shengwei's background.
According to Yan Shengwei himself, his family had been grave robbers for generations. There’s a saying: "Wealth does not last beyond three generations." This saying held much truth; even with mountains of gold and silver, it couldn't withstand the extravagance of descendants.
Since his grandfather's death, government regulations had tightened significantly, making grave robbing increasingly difficult. His family had once been wealthy and could have made money through other businesses, but after his grandfather passed away, his father squandered their wealth recklessly. The family fortune dwindled rapidly. Yan Shengwei himself was not fond of studying; he never attended college and couldn’t find work, making it impossible for him to earn money. Fortunately, his grandfather had often taught him the skills of a grave robber. After seeing some images in the news, he decided to take a chance and gathered a group of aimless young heirs to explore.
"Grave Robber" is essentially what common folk refer to as "tomb raiders." In the Changsha area, they are known as "Dirt Experts," engaging in activities that profit from the dead—hardly a respectable profession. Yet Yan Shengwei spoke of his family's legacy with great pride.
After boasting about his lineage, he turned his attention back to the tomb: "This tomb definitely has two ghosts; we almost got killed when we entered. Luckily, I have my family's life-saving trinkets. The specifications of this tomb resemble those of officials from the Qin Dynasty but are a bit more extravagant. However, I feel like this tomb might be fake—the real treasures the Tomb Owner wants to hide aren't here. I can't tell if I'm overthinking it."
Upon hearing this, Mu Xuanche felt a flicker of unease: this tomb might indeed be a facade.
He turned to Yan Shengwei and asked, "What do you mean by that? How did you conclude that the tomb might be fake?"
Yan Shengwei was startled by Mu Xuanche's sudden question, then patted his chest. "Boss, you're going to scare me to death! This is a dead person's home, after all."
Mu Xuanche replied coldly, "Answer the question, no nonsense."
Yan Shengwei shrugged. "Alright, why are you so anxious, Boss? Well... first of all, I exaggerated the power of this treasure a bit. When a ghost appears, very few can escape. Clearly, those two ghosts were just toying with us. Moreover, I think the malevolent energy they emitted isn't as strong as my grandfather told me. I refuse to believe my grandfather was wrong. Although he can be a bit of a joker and likes to tease me, he would never be careless when it comes to his grandson's life. Throughout history, I've never heard of any ghost having such little malevolent energy. There’s only one way for them to end up like this."
At this point, he built suspense, and Mu Xuanche appeared slightly impatient.
Yan Shengwei had been quite proud of his knowledge, but seeing Mu Xuanche's expression made him realize his boss was growing impatient. So he quickly continued, "The two ghosts are here to accompany the Tomb Owner in death. Naturally, their resentment is directed at him the most. However, they cannot take revenge on the Tomb Owner directly, so they can only harm other living people to vent their frustrations. If the Tomb Owner's corpse were damaged or even destroyed, the ghosts could reincarnate, and their malevolent energy would naturally decrease."
Mu Xuanche narrowed his eyes. The Corpse King must have held a significant position; a tomb of this scale with child sacrifices could not have ended in resentment without reason. What could have caused such lingering resentment?
The Ghost Seal was not necessarily in the hands of this Corpse King; everything was merely speculation. Yan Shengwei's appearance made things even more perplexing.
After thinking for a moment and seeing Yan Shengwei looking at him again, Mu Xuanche said, "Continue your analysis."
Yan Shengwei went on, "Earlier we encountered ghosts, and now regarding the specifications of this tomb... I casually walked around and roughly judged that this tomb path should be in a '甲' or '中' shape. In ancient times, only nobles could construct such tombs. However, I'm not entirely certain whether it is one of these two shapes.
I have a feeling that this tomb path might be built more complexly based on either shape. Clearly, this does not comply with regulations; thus, the owner of this tomb was definitely not a good minister. However, paradoxically, the specifications of his tomb are indeed impressive. This suggests that such an ostentatious design could only have been constructed with the emperor's tacit approval at that time, implying that the emperor was previously unaware of what he had done.
However, I think this point can also be overturned; the emperor must have discovered the issue later on because I also found that a large section of the tomb path has been damaged—not through grave robbing techniques but as if a large group had deliberately destroyed it. Therefore, this minister must have brought something into the tomb that concerned the emperor greatly; upon discovering it, the emperor became furious and came to wreak havoc in the tomb."
While they were discussing this, the four of them had already arrived at a chamber entrance. Yan Shengwei pointed at the items inside the chamber. "This is our third point of suspicion: I wonder if you and Brother Bai noticed that there are pitifully few gold and silver treasures here; most are bronze funerary objects.
If my previous assumptions hold true—that he was a treacherous minister who angered even the emperor enough to destroy his tomb—wouldn't he have placed valuable items in his own burial site? This clearly defies logic. From these three points alone, it seems very likely that this tomb is not actually the true resting place of this Tomb Owner."
Bai Qiling chuckled and said, "You make it sound quite plausible! But why do I feel like you're just making stuff up seriously? Don't take advantage of our ignorance about grave robbing!"
Yan Shengwei grew anxious and insisted repeatedly, "Brother Bai! I'm presenting solid reasoning here! Otherwise, let's wait and see; once we enter the main burial chamber, you'll see—there definitely won't be any corpse!"
Bai Qiling laughed even harder, saying, "I know the corpse isn't here. The corpse turned into a Zombie and we took care of it outside."
Yan Shengwei's eyes widened as he muttered, "What the hell... there really are Zombies? I thought encountering a ghost was already the end of it..."
Suddenly, he stopped his lament about the Zombies and excitedly exclaimed, "What the hell, Brother Bai! You guys are so amazing, you can handle Zombies! What do they look like? Are they like those Zombies from those old Hong Kong movies?"
Bai Qiling rolled his eyes. "How would I know? I've never seen your stuff."
In the meantime, Mu Xuanche had circled around the Chamber and found nothing of value. However, he discovered a few talismans that had been burned by spiritual energy. He turned back to interrupt Yan Shengwei's questioning and said seriously to Bai Qiling, "Yan Xi has been here and fought with a Vengeful Spirit."
Bai Qiling's expression grew solemn. "I haven't been able to locate the Vengeful Spirit's fixed position. Can you still sense Gu Yanxi's condition?"
Mu Xuanche remained silent with a cold expression, merely nodding in response.
