I had no time to dwell on these matters and quickly relayed what I had learned from the old man: "It's highly likely that the trouble in this village is caused by a Drought Corpse."
"Oh? How does Yan Xi know this?" Mu Xuanche asked, looking at me with interest.
I replied, "The old man saw it himself. From his description, I deduced it."
Mu Xuanche nodded in approval. "Good. When I first entered the village, I sensed that it wasn't a ghost or spirit causing the disturbances. I just couldn't determine what it was. Your deduction might very well be the truth."
I eagerly asked, "If that's the case, how do we eliminate this Drought Corpse? Which of the talismans and tools I brought can be used?"
Mu Xuanche reassured me, "Don't rush. I've already called Bai Qiling and the big guy over. If it were a ghost or spirit, I could handle it easily, but with a Drought Corpse, I don't have much deterrent power against them. I'll need their help."
Just then, as if summoned by fate, Bai Qiling called to say he and the big guy had arrived at the village entrance.
Mu Xuanche directed them on how to get here, and before long, they drove up.
Mu Xuanche took me into the car and instructed them on the route to the riverbank, then leaned back to rest his eyes.
Bai Qiling was as proud as ever, and the big guy was even more so; he held Mu Xuanche in high regard.
Since Mu Xuanche wasn't speaking, neither did he. Thus, our group of four traveled in silence until we reached our destination.
Mu Xuanche didn't let us out immediately upon arrival; instead, he pulled out some photos he had taken earlier. He carefully examined one that was shot from above.
The photo was quite clear and hadn't been blurred by the rain.
In the northwest corner of the collapsed mountain, there was a water vein fault visible in the photo, with water flowing clearly from the fracture.
Due to the heavy rain, the mountainside was muddy and difficult to navigate compared to before.
I looked at Mu Xuanche's actions in confusion, not understanding why he was studying the photo when this wasn't our final destination.
Just as I was about to ask him, he put down the photo, opened the door, and got out of the car.
We stood by the riverbank; the river surface was remarkably calm, without a ripple in sight.
Bai Qiling stepped ahead to the riverbank, scooping a handful of water and bringing it to his nose. A meaningful smile appeared on his face as he turned to Mu Xuanche. "The water here is really filthy; there are quite a few corpses hidden within."
Mu Xuanche stepped forward, pricking his finger with the tip of his knife. A drop of bright red blood fell into the river, and the once calm water suddenly began to boil like it was heated.
Frowning, Mu Xuanche started to retreat and then turned to us. "It's not a good time to disturb what's beneath the river. We should come back later."
In the car, I asked Mu Xuanche in confusion, "What exactly is it? Is it the Drought Corpse? Why are we leaving so suddenly?"
Although Mu Xuanche's expression didn't change much, I could still sense the heaviness in his mood.
He replied, "It's the Corpse King."
I was instantly speechless. The Corpse King...
The Corpse King is a high-level Zombie that feeds on blood, far superior to the Drought Corpse. Once it begins its evolution into a Corpse King, it will require fresh blood; the more blood it consumes, the stronger it becomes. It is the ruler among Zombies.
Since we couldn't deal with the Corpse King ourselves at that moment, Mu Xuanche decided we should leave for now.
Thus, we returned to the village chief's house.
Mu Xuanche was the first to get out of the car. I followed closely behind and noticed his urgency as he quickly found the village chief. "Chief, I have figured out why your village is in this state. I hope your villagers can assist me; I promise I can eliminate this root cause."
The village chief asked in astonishment, "What is it? What has been harming my villagers?"
Mu Xuanche maintained a cold demeanor and quickly responded, "It's the Drought Corpse—essentially a Zombie."
The village chief instinctively took a few steps back and waved his hand at us. "How can humans fight against these things? We can't defeat them. Outsiders, you should leave quickly."
Hearing this made me anxious. "Chief, are you really going to just watch as your villagers are eaten one by one? What’s in your village now isn’t an ordinary Zombie; it's a Corpse King! However, it has just recently evolved into a Corpse King and isn't that strong yet. If it kills more people and drinks more blood, then it won't just be your village facing disaster."
The village chief covered his face with his hands in despair. "I never expected we would provoke such a legendary monster. But what can you do? We are all human; how can we deal with it?"
Just as I was about to speak again, the village chief suddenly became urgent. He asked, "You are police officers; can you call in the military? Perhaps guns and cannons can kill this monster. Please contact your superiors and ask them to come save us."
I had initially thought about directly telling him that my identity was Exorcist, capable of exorcising ghosts and capturing Zombies. However, his words suddenly made me feel awkward. What kind of police were we? It was all Mu Xuanche's fault for speaking carelessly.
Once Mu Xuanche returned to the village, he became increasingly cold. His expression remained icy, showing no signs of the awkwardness that would come from a lie being exposed. He simply said, "We are not the police, but we have the ability to help you eliminate this Corpse King, as long as you, the village chief, are willing to assist us."
The village chief looked somewhat stunned and frowned, "If you are not the police, why did you deceive me in the first place?"
Mu Xuanche shrugged, "If I had told you we weren't the police back then, you would have tried to chase us away."
At that moment, I interjected, "Village chief, please trust us. The police won't be of any use here, but we can truly help you eliminate this Corpse King. We are Exorcists, specialized in dealing with these malevolent entities that harm lives."
The village chief furrowed his brow and thought for a moment. "Well then, at this point, I have no better options. Whatever you need, just let me know and I will do my best. The lives of everyone in our village depend on you; please make sure to eliminate this Corpse King."
With the village chief's promise, I felt a surge of motivation.
Confidently, I replied, "Don't worry; we will definitely be able to eliminate him."
At this point, Mu Xuanche spoke up again. "Village chief, we need you to find three or four strong young men who are good swimmers to assist us. I'll pay ten thousand for each person. Please ask around and see who is willing. Also, there may be dangers involved in this mission."
This mountain village was not wealthy; ten thousand could be a lifetime's worth of money for them.
The village chief readily agreed and then asked what else we needed.
Mu Xuanche continued, "Prepare live chickens—more is better—Glutinous Rice, and Black Dog Blood. The more we have of these items, the better. Please ensure they are ready by noon tomorrow. I'll cover the costs; please help us procure these items."
He then pulled out a stack of cash that looked like it amounted to around ten thousand.
The village chief accepted it without hesitation. "I'll go find people to prepare these things right now. If you'd like, you can stay at my place tonight; my house is bigger and has enough room for you."
Mu Xuanche thanked him, and then the village chief's wife led us to our room.
Once inside the room with Mu Xuanche, he suddenly tapped my forehead with his hand. "When will you change your impulsive nature? You barely understand today's situation yet you're already boasting to the village chief."
Having spent so much time with him, I could tell when he was angry just by looking at him. So right now he was merely warning me; he hadn't reached the point of losing his temper yet.
I rubbed my forehead where I had been hit and pouted, "It's still because I trust you. You're so amazing; I know you must have a way."
My words were a compliment to him.
Mu Xuanche smiled and said in his deep voice, "Wife, your words have become sweeter lately. If it weren't for the big guy feeding you honey, I wouldn't want to let you leave me."
Upon hearing this, I replied, "Why would I want to leave you? Where else could I find such a good man?"
Then I wrapped my arms around his waist and leaned against him, acting cute.
Mu Xuanche chuckled helplessly, filled with affection, and reached out to pat my head.
I was immersed in this wonderful atmosphere and didn't notice him whispering softly, "Yan Xi, I will never let you die."
