This... could it be the work of a nightmare?
I vaguely felt that someone was secretly watching me. I dared not make any sudden moves, sitting in the passenger seat, staring blankly at my fingers.
Waiting is the most agonizing thing in the world, especially since I had no idea how much time had passed, which only prolonged my anxiety. Sitting in the car felt like torture.
Suddenly, the headlights went out.
I jerked my head up; everything ahead was pitch black, and I could hardly see anything.
I still had Mu Xuanche's Bone Whistle with me, but I had been reluctant to blow it before. I feared disturbing Mu Xuanche. However, the situation was becoming increasingly strange, and I worried that staying alone would lead to something unforeseen.
I took a deep breath and blew into the Bone Whistle. Suddenly, a beam of light enveloped me completely, and then, inexplicably, my whole body felt as if it were being compressed.
I shivered and woke up.
The car was still playing Maxim's "Exodus," and Mu Xuanche had not left the driver's seat; instead, we had entered a city beneath the Expressway.
The city lacked the hustle and bustle of a big metropolis, with only sparse streetlights illuminating the way.
It dawned on me that everything that had just happened was a nightmare.
I had fallen into a nightmare.
Seeing that I was awake, Mu Xuanche reached out a hand and handed me some tissues. "Wipe your sweat; the nightmare has been resolved."
I was still shaken. Although nothing terrifying had appeared in the nightmare, the feeling of being watched from the shadows was particularly eerie and oppressive.
It was already past eleven o'clock. Mu Xuanche took me to a three-star hotel. There was no choice; this city didn’t have many good hotels available.
Mu Xuanche went to park the car, and I sat in the lobby waiting for him.
"Yan Xi,"
I turned my head and saw Mingyue. I stood up excitedly, "Mingyue, what brings you here?"
Shangguan Mingyue also wore a bright smile, "I came to find you. I just ran into Mu Xuanche outside, and he told me where you were so I could come look for you."
Before I could respond, she added, "Let's go outside first; I need to talk to you about something."
I followed her out of the hotel without suspicion.
However, once we were outside, Mingyue seemed to ignore me. When I asked where we were going, she didn’t answer. I was puzzled when suddenly Mu Xuanche appeared before me.
Mu Xuanche wore a stern expression. "Where are you two going?"
Feeling a bit frustrated, I replied, "I don’t know..."
I tugged at Mingyue's sleeve and asked, "Mingyue, where are we actually going?"
But she ignored me and turned to leave.
Mu Xuanche grabbed Mingyue's arm. I was confused about what was happening.
Initially, I planned to intervene and ask Mu Xuanche to let go of her, but unexpectedly, Mingyue swiftly twisted her waist and nearly kicked Mu Xuanche with her right foot.
To avoid her kick, Mu Xuanche had no choice but to release her. However, he quickly countered by launching a surprise elbow lock from behind that restrained Shangguan Mingyue.
Seeing them fighting without any prior warning made my heart race. Now witnessing Mu Xuanche treating my good friend this way, I hurried forward to separate them.
Mu Xuanche's cold voice asked me, "Yan Xi, have you recognized whether this is your senior sister, Shangguan Mingyue?"
I was taken aback. What did Mu Xuanche mean by that? The Shangguan Mingyue in front of me wasn't real.
With a stern face, Mu Xuanche spoke to her in a chilling tone, "I'll give you a chance. Answer my question, and once you're done, I'll let you go back to report to your master. If you don't cooperate honestly, then I can't guarantee you won't suffer a bit."
I still couldn't believe it... What was happening?
The imposter Shangguan Mingyue remained silent. Mu Xuanche sneered, "What a loyal dog to your master you are."
He used nylon cords to bind the imposter Shangguan Mingyue's hands and feet and tossed her to the ground like a rag.
I stood silently to the side.
Mu Xuanche crouched down, a fake smile on his lips, addressing the imposter Shangguan Mingyue, "I'll respect you as a good dog. Here's the deal: if you answer just one question for me, I'll let you go. How about that?"
The imposter Shangguan Mingyue still didn't speak; she merely stared at Mu Xuanche with unblinking eyes, her gaze filled with hatred as if she wanted to bore into him.
Seeing her like this, Mu Xuanche chuckled lightly, "Do you really think I can't pry open your mouth?"
Before his words had even faded, Mu Xuanche's leg was already raised against the imposter Shangguan Mingyue.
She curled up in pain, moaning softly.
Having lived this long, Mu Xuanche certainly wouldn't let someone who defied him off easily.
With that fake smile still on his face, he said, "How did you come by this skin of Shangguan Mingyue? Why don't I cut it open and take a look?"
With that, he began to slice open the skin on the imposter Shangguan Mingyue's arm with a Swiss Army knife.
One of his arms was marked with three cuts from a military knife. He asked the Imposter Shangguan Mingyue, "So, do you want to tell me who sent you to impersonate Shangguan Mingyue and deceive her?"
The Imposter Shangguan Mingyue remained silent. Mu Xuanche gradually let go of his forced smile, his face turning cold as he began to tear the skin from the three cuts with his hands. Just as Mu Xuanche was about to finish tearing off the skin from the Imposter Shangguan Mingyue's arm, she could no longer hold back and let out a painful scream.
This time, Mu Xuanche did not laugh; he simply maintained a cold expression. "Is this fun for you? If you think it's not enough, we can continue. Look, you still have plenty of skin left; we can tear it until it shines."
After all, the Imposter Shangguan Mingyue was a woman, and tears streamed down her face like a flood that could not be contained. She sobbed continuously but refused to utter a single word.
Mu Xuanche stood up, looking at her coldly. "Do you really think I would torture you all night just to find out who sent you? You are nothing but a dog; if you die, so be it. I really don't need to waste my time playing with you."
He then began to cut off the Imposter Shangguan Mingyue's fingers one by one. With each finger severed, he randomly stabbed her with the knife. Before long, the Imposter Shangguan Mingyue had become a bloody mess.
She could no longer endure the pain, gasping for breath and displaying an expression of utter agony. In broken sentences, she said, "I really don’t know. All I know is that there’s a ghost with a Buddhist swastika tattoo on his hand. He told me to impersonate Shangguan Mingyue to deceive Gu Yanxi. I was just carrying out this mission; I don’t know anything else."
Mu Xuanche snorted coldly and tossed aside the Swiss army knife, kicking the Imposter Shangguan Mingyue as if she were a piece of rotten meat. "This could have been over long ago; why did you have to make yourself look this miserable? Truly shameless."
The Imposter Shangguan Mingyue let out another piercing scream due to the unbearable pain.
Mu Xuanche didn’t care about her life or death anymore and pulled me away before I could regain my senses.
Back in the hotel room, I sat there in silence.
Mu Xuanche noticed and asked me, "Yan Xi, can’t you accept this side of me?"
I snapped back to reality and quickly replied, "No, it’s not that. I just suddenly feel a sense of melancholy—why are our fates so deeply intertwined? Why is human greed endless? Why do ghosts want to harm lives?"
Mu Xuanche walked over and gently stroked my face. "Yan Xi, I will give you the best. Don’t worry about what others are like; just know that only I truly care for you. Remember, I love you."
Suddenly, my eyes filled with tears as I hugged Mu Xuanche and cried uncontrollably.
I am currently protected by Mu Xuanche, and my parents along with Chang'an have been sent away safely.
I wonder how Mingyue is doing in the Cult of Spirits. Although I saw her last time, it was just a distant glance.
I also don't know what will happen to her. Last time, someone impersonated her phone to send a distress signal, and this time they are directly impersonating her face.
What will this damned bastard do next? It's truly hard to predict and impossible to guard against.
Right now, the only thing I can do is follow Mu Xuanche's instructions and be cautious; otherwise, I really don't know what might happen.
Originally, I only planned to investigate the landslide area in S City. Neither Mu Xuanche nor I expected so many incidents to occur on the way. Fortunately, the troubles weren't too significant and won't delay our progress in investigating the connection between several gold foils and the Cult of Spirits.
Mu Xuanche and I embraced each other and fell asleep.
