Before long, the big man arrived. I glanced at him, and he understood my meaning. However, instead of answering me directly, he ran over to Mu Xuanche to report.
"Master, Chuchen's spiritual power has likely been crippled, and he was thrown into the sea, which is why he ended up like this."
Hearing the big man's words, my heart tightened instantly. Chuchen had originally been a cultivator, so even after his death, his ghost had cultivated a deep level of power. Now that his abilities were wasted, it was as if a normal person had their limbs severed; he had become almost completely incapacitated.
I felt anxious and restless; it was unbearable.
"What about his soul?" Mu Xuanche asked the big man.
"Young Master Bai is currently helping him restore his soul. There shouldn't be any major issues."
As long as his soul was preserved, it meant that his life was also preserved. My heart eased just a little, though not entirely. I sighed in relief, only to have Mu Xuanche notice. He shot me a glare.
This made me panic; I absolutely could not make a mistake at this moment. If anything happened to Chuchen, it would be disastrous.
I obediently sat beside Mu Xuanche, putting on a compliant expression while lowering my head to pretend to think.
"Any news?" Mu Xuanche asked.
"Master, our scouts from the Cult of Spirits have returned. It was the Spirit Sect Leader who personally dealt with Chuchen. No one knows the specifics of why," the burly man reported.
I tilted my head slightly, secretly observing Mu Xuanche's expression.
After hearing the report, he sneered and said, "Crossing the river and tearing down the bridge—this is just his usual method. But this time, the target is Chuchen. That poor soul who has been enslaved for most of his life and gained nothing. Come, let's see how regretful he will be once he wakes up."
Mu Xuanche led the burly man out, and I wanted to follow but hesitated.
If I showed too much concern for Chuchen, it would only hurt him more.
To my surprise, Mu Xuanche turned back and looked at me, asking, "Do you want to go?"
I obediently nodded; after all, he asked me. I didn't push it.
He waved his hand as if summoning a dog.
Unfortunately, I followed him without any dignity, walking beside him toward Bai Qiling's room.
Bai Qiling's room was arranged in a more distant location at his own request—he was a single man afraid of being mistreated.
In truth, it was because he needed a quiet environment to concoct various potions in peace, which is why he chose to stay far away.
I had never asked Mu Xuanche why someone as proud as Bai Qiling—like a flamboyant peacock—was so loyal to him. Could it really be just because of a life-saving grace that Bai Qiling would follow Mu Xuanche so faithfully? It seemed unlikely.
Every time I arrive at Bai Qiling, I can't help but think of Mingyue. I wonder where she is now and if she is doing well.
It has been almost a month since I last saw her, and she has vanished just like my master and senior brother, leaving no trace behind.
I could smell the fragrance of herbs from a distance; Bai Qiling's house was right in front of me.
The burly man pushed the door open, and Mu Xuanche and I stepped inside.
The moment I entered, I was overwhelmed by the stench and nearly stumbled back out.
The smell inside was unbearable, like a mix of rotten eggs and salted fish—truly horrendous.
I pinched my nose, frowning as I stared at Bai Qiling, wondering what he was concocting that smelled so foul.
The burly man had been summoned to help him and came out carrying a whole bucket of filthy water.
As he passed in front of me, I nearly fainted from the stench.
Inside, Bai Qiling was also furious, storming out to glare at Mu Xuanche with an intimidating demeanor.
However, when Mu Xuanche glanced at him, he immediately softened, his tone shifting to one of complaint and negotiation.
"Xuan Wang, please don't bring back these rotten salted fish for me to treat anymore. This stuff smells so bad that I want to be reborn," he said.
"Then go and be reincarnated," Mu Xuanche said, cutting through all of Bai Qiling's complaints. Furious, Bai Qiling stormed over to a nearby stone bench and sat down.
I glanced inside the room; Chuchen, who had been swollen to twice her size, had now returned to normal. The large man must have taken out the excess water from Chuchen's body earlier. Being soaked in seawater had caused her to swell up as she absorbed more water.
Bai Qiling was angry, and Mu Xuanche approached him and asked, "How is she?"
Initially, Bai Qiling turned his head away, unwilling to respond to Mu Xuanche. However, he was startled by the cold aura radiating from Mu Xuanche and obediently replied, "She'll be fine soon."
With that, he stood up, kicked the stone bench, and rushed back into the room.
After a long while, he emerged and shouted at the large man, "You need to find me another room right now. I won't stay here anymore. Get rid of everything inside; burn it all, do you understand?"
Seeing him so angry, the large man chuckled and patted his shoulder in agreement, promising to take care of it right away.
Only then did Bai Qiling's expression improve slightly. This guy had always been a neat freak; helping Chuchen recover was already pushing his limits.
After giving instructions to the large man, Bai Qiling left to take ten showers to rid himself of the smell.
Once Bai Qiling had gone, the large man entered the room.
Not long after, I saw him supporting the pale-faced Chuchen as they walked out.
Chuchen's clothes seemed to have been changed, as I recognized the outfit from when Bai Qiling wore it. No wonder that guy was shouting earlier about wanting to replace everything in the house.
The moment he stepped out, his gaze landed on me.
As our eyes met, I felt a twinge of guilt towards him.
"Hmm..."
A cough from the burly man beside me snapped me back to reality.
He turned to Mu Xuanche and said, "This time, consider it a debt I owe you. I will repay it in the future."
"What do you have to repay with now? Just a useless soul," Mu Xuanche replied coldly, his words chilling enough to make anyone uncomfortable.
Especially for Chuchen, who was already feeling down. He pushed the burly man aside, trying to leave.
But he didn't even have the strength to stand. The moment he shoved the man away, he collapsed onto the ground.
Mu Xuanche walked over to him and looked down with disdain in his eyes.
Lying on the ground, Chuchen didn't even dare to meet his gaze.
Now, he was like an ant struggling to survive, kneeling on the ground with no ability to resist at all.
I couldn't bear to look at such a scene and wanted to turn my head away.
But the hand tightly gripping mine did not allow it. Mu Xuanche's palm continued to tighten, and I felt pain, more so knowing that he was threatening me.
Mu Xuanche forced me to look at Chuchen in his current miserable state. Although I didn't understand why Mu Xuanche was doing this, under his pressure, I had no choice but to meet Chuchen's gaze.
"Considering that you once helped Yan Xi, I'll help you this once. Once you're healed, you can leave," Mu Xuanche said.
After Mu Xuanche finished speaking, Chuchen seemed to collapse completely.
His pride had been severely insulted. He looked up at me with red eyes, tears mixed with blood at the corners of his eyes.
Under his humble gaze, Mu Xuanche embraced me and left.
All the way, I felt a lump in my throat; I thought Mu Xuanche was too cruel to Chuchen.
Although he had found Bai Qiling to save Chuchen, this situation was worse than killing him.
Chuchen's heart had almost shattered; even if his life was saved, his spirit would never return.
Mu Xuanche pulled me into the courtyard and pressed me down on a stone bench before sitting across from me.
He stared at me for a long time. I made no move, and he remained silent as well.
In moments like this, I feel somewhat grateful to be mute; at least I don't have to speak now, right?
"Do you think I'm being particularly cruel to Chuchen?"
He asked me, and inwardly I had nodded a thousand times, but on the surface, I still dared not show a hint of it.
Mu Xuanche's jealousy was overwhelming; right now, Chuchen felt smaller than an ant.
He let out a cold laugh, his expression tinged with sadness.
"Gu Yanxi, you ultimately still don't trust me enough."
I could hear the deep disappointment in his tone, and I couldn't understand why he suddenly felt this way.
