I woke up again, feeling the pain at the back of my neck.
As I opened my eyes, I realized I was no longer in the Tomb but inside a tent.
My mind was filled with the last smile of Liu Qingfeng. It was a farewell, wasn't it?
When Mu Xuanche asked him to fetch the jade pendant, he must have known he was doomed. That's why he said those things to me.
It had to be that way. Was the Qin Wang's Tomb really that important, to sacrifice so many lives to find it?
My heart slowly grew cold. From the moment Liu Qingfeng started looking after me, our fates became inextricably linked.
In the end, he died because of me.
He saved my life, yet ultimately perished because of me. I bitterly laughed and fell back onto the bed.
Mu Xuanche, I loved you so much. Why do you keep hurting me like this, time and time again?
What did I do wrong? I stared blankly at the light bulb above.
The soft yellow light blinded my eyes, yet I didn’t even have the strength to close them.
I just lay there quietly until someone opened the tent flap. I still didn’t move.
It was Mu Xuanche; he walked in.
He was holding something in his hand. I stared at him blankly, feeling too tired even to glance his way.
He bent down and helped me sit up. "Yan Xi, eat something," he said.
His voice was so gentle, sweet like sugar, but no one knew that excessive sweetness brought sorrow.
I felt like a lifeless puppet; when he called me, I didn’t respond.
After a sigh, he set the food aside and got up to leave.
After the darkness, he returned once more, taking the cold food away and replacing it with fresh dishes.
This time, he didn’t just set it aside; he lifted me up and brought the bowl to my lips, forcing me to open my mouth and pouring the contents in.
It seemed he knew I wouldn’t comply, preparing something like broth for me.
I wasn’t trying to starve myself; my heart was just too cold, so cold that I had no strength left.
I let him control me; he took a spoonful, and I swallowed it down.
Under his feeding, I finished the entire bowl of soup.
It was quite a feat for him to find meat broth in such a wilderness; usually, having some crackers would be good enough.
After I finished eating, he took the bowl away and quickly returned.
He removed his jacket and lay down beside me, slipping under the covers.
He turned off the light, plunging the room into darkness.
The tent above me had a square made of transparent material, allowing me to see the sky above.
The sky in the mountains was much brighter than in the city, filled with countless twinkling stars, each one particularly bright.
I had forgotten how long it had been since I lay quietly watching the stars like this. The sky back home was just as beautiful, untouched and pure.
I could feel him slowly leaning closer to me, his hand resting on my waist.
The warmth of his palm seeped through my clothing, sending a shiver down my spine. I stiffened, afraid to move.
"Ah..."
I heard his sigh. I remained still as he drew nearer.
He wrapped his arms around me, resting his head on my shoulder.
His slightly cold lips brushed against the delicate skin of my neck. If it were before, things might have turned passionate by now.
But now, neither of us dared to take that step further, and so nothing more happened.
I gazed at the sky until my eyes grew tired, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
Just before I fell asleep, I heard his voice whisper three words in my ear.
"I'm sorry."
I didn't know if he sensed it, but suddenly tears welled up in my eyes and began to slide down my cheeks.
When I woke up, his arm was still wrapped around my waist.
I turned around and happened to meet his gaze as he opened his eyes.
His eyes were particularly dark and shiny, much darker than those of an average person, the kind that captivates you at first glance. The moment I saw them, I was entranced.
He spoke, his unique magnetic voice enticing me, "Good morning."
I instinctively wanted to return the greeting, but when I opened my mouth, I found that no sound came out.
What was going on? I reached up to pat my throat, but no matter how hard I tried, it was futile.
He noticed my struggle and sat up, concern etched on his face. "Yan Xi, what's wrong?"
I couldn't find the words to respond; I could only point at my throat to indicate that I was unable to speak.
He gestured for me to open my mouth so he could check. I complied and opened it wide, but he examined me for a while without any results.
What was this? Was it some kind of trick?
I hadn’t wanted to talk yesterday, but now that I did, I couldn’t make a sound.
I managed a weak smile and pushed his hand away. Perhaps this was my punishment.
Because something had suddenly gone wrong with me, everyone had been forced to hasten their pace.
More than twenty people had come from the Vast and Mighty, but now only five remained.
When I saw Chen Jiang and the others, my expression immediately turned cold.
Perhaps it was because of Mu Xuanche; Chen Jiang pulled the other two away from me and did not confront me directly.
The path we had taken was now blocked, and we needed to find a new way out.
In such a vast place, there must be an exit; it was impossible to be trapped here.
The question now was which route to take. In front of us was a steep cliff, and behind us was the turbulent sea.
Neither direction looked promising unless there were other paths we were unaware of.
Just as everyone was at a loss, Chen Jiang suddenly spoke up, "Xuan Wang, Gu Si can set up a game. Let her see if there’s another way we can take."
After he spoke, he received a glare from Mu Xuanche and obediently stepped aside. However, Old Fox was not discouraged and kept sneaking glances at me.
Mu Xuanche did not insist, but I still crouched down to set up the game.
It wasn’t just them who needed to get out; I did too. For my own sake, I had to figure out a way to escape.
I squatted on the ground and deduced for a while, overturning several chaotic scenarios before starting anew.
I realized that escaping was not impossible; the Life Gate was in the cave ahead. We should be able to leave through that cave.
I couldn’t speak yet, so I pointed in the direction ahead to indicate to everyone that we could exit from there.
Mu Xuanche nodded and took my hand to lead me forward.
He now wishes he could tie me to his side, not allowing me to leave his sight for even a moment.
I know he is afraid that I will worry if I leave like this, but how could I?
I like him so much; as he knows, I am the mother of Chang'an. I cannot abandon my husband and children to stay by his side.
When I proposed the Life Gate, no one questioned it, and we all moved forward together.
I deduced that it was the Life Gate, but since I couldn't speak, I didn't tell them that this was a perilous Life Gate.
Once we enter, I cannot predict how many will come out.
But this is the only way to leave this valley; there are no other options.
As we entered the cave, a chill swept over everyone.
Except for Mu Xuanche, who remained unaffected by any temperature, everyone else stopped to put on their coats.
Just as we paused, a faint sound reached our ears, uncertain and indistinct.
I felt a sense of danger approaching, and the hand that Mu Xuanche held tightened involuntarily.
He noticed and instructed everyone to be vigilant, then pulled me tightly into his embrace.
Leaning down to my ear, he whispered, "Don't be afraid; I'm here."
I know he is here; I won't get hurt. But the thought of him harming those around me is something I cannot accept.
A strong gust of wind suddenly surged in, carrying with it a nauseating stench.
"Chen Jiang" had a broad perspective. He shouted loudly, "Get down! It's a Vampire Bat!"
In this damp coastal mountain cave, it was not surprising to encounter Vampire Bats.
"Mu Xuanche" pressed me down, wrapping me tightly so that only my eyes were exposed to see outside.
I saw those Vampire Bats, their sharp white fangs glinting as they dove toward the ground.
The others curled up on the floor, covering their heads.
Being bitten by a Vampire Bat was not the worst part; the most important thing was not to get entangled. Once caught, your blood would be drained.
Feeding one Vampire Bat was not enough; more would come rushing in until you were completely drained of blood.
