I don't know why Mu Xuanche has disappeared, but I believe he wouldn't abandon me. He must have gone to find some evidence.
With a calm expression, I found a clean spot to sit down. I picked up a cup of boiling water from the fire and leisurely drank it before speaking again.
"What are you all saying? I can't understand."
They probably thought my calm demeanor meant I had something planned, but now that I spoke so casually, their faces twisted in confusion as they stared at me wide-eyed.
"Gu Si, what do you mean by that? Don't think just because you're from the Xuanzong that we won't dare to do anything to you."
The one speaking was an old man I didn't recognize, but given his close association with Chen Jiang, he was likely one of Chen Jiang's people.
Trying to intimidate me?
Do they really think I'm just a teenage girl who hasn't experienced the world? They think they can scare me with this little stunt? Well, I won't hold back.
I tossed the cup at the man's feet. "What’s it going to be? Want to fight?"
Right now, I felt like a little thug. I was confident they wouldn't dare to rush at me.
After demonstrating my strength twice before, they still hadn't figured out what was going on. No one wanted to be the first to step forward and meet their demise, so I didn't have to worry about them attacking.
As expected, the old man was just angry but didn't make a move against me. My only concern now was preventing them from banding together.
If they united against me, it would be too disadvantageous. If Mu Xuanche didn't return in time, I'd be left in an awkward situation.
After being intimidated, Chen Jiang—the Old Fox—made his appearance again.
"Gu Si, although you're young, you need to keep your word. How did you promise everyone last night?"
Old Fox just loves to pressure me with the crowd; who’s afraid of whom?
"Am I not allowed to change my mind? He just stepped out for a moment, and now you say he’s run away? Why should I even talk to you?"
No one expected me to be so unreasonable, rambling on without a care.
Even Chen Jiang was at a loss for words, having to shift his tone to one of negotiation.
"Gu Si, let’s discuss this. Everyone came out for a reason. Waiting like this isn’t a solution; you need to give everyone a deadline."
You damn old fox, I cursed him silently in my heart while still putting on a front.
"Chen, the Sect Leader, how about this: if he doesn’t return within two hours, I’ll leave it up to you all to decide what to do."
I had made my stance clear; they had no choice but to agree.
My plan was simple: if Mu Xuanche didn’t come back in two hours, I would grab my gun and run.
The outcome for these people would not be pleasant, and while they were still unaware of my true strength, I could make my escape.
However, it seemed that wouldn’t be necessary.
Just as I finished speaking, I saw Mu Xuanche slowly walking towards us.
Seeing him arrive, I didn't even glance at anyone else and rushed straight towards him.
"Where have you been?"
There was a hint of grievance in my tone. He affectionately patted my head and explained why he had gone out.
"I went to catch the culprit."
I knew he wouldn't just leave me behind.
I wanted to ask him about his writing, but Chen Jiang, that annoying guy, interrupted our conversation.
"Have you found the culprit, brother?"
Mu Xuanche nodded, and Chen Jiang's face lit up with excitement as he pressed on, "Oh?"
Mu Xuanche pointed at someone unexpected.
Indeed, that person hadn't been part of the meeting, but he was the first one cleared of suspicion last night because he had an alibi, and not just one person could vouch for him.
So when Mu Xuanche pointed at him, those who had helped verify his alibi immediately jumped out, shouting that it was impossible for Mu Xuanche to be lying.
Seeing him so calm, I knew he must have evidence.
Mu Xuanche slowly walked towards that person, who remained unfazed, a cold smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Do you admit it?" Mu Xuanche asked him.
The man retorted to Mu Xuanche, "Do you have any evidence?"
Mu Xuanche ignored him and walked up to the witnesses, pointing at them one by one. "Are you all sure you saw him? Did you clearly see Dapper?"
Those people were intimidated by Mu Xuanche's powerful aura, and a few began to waver in their certainty.
They had only seen a vague shadow that resembled him, and there had indeed been a real confrontation, a face-to-face encounter.
Seeing the situation turn against him, the accused became anxious and lunged toward Mu Xuanche.
Noticing something was off, I quickly drew a knife from Mu Xuanche's waist and pressed it against the man's neck, glaring at him fiercely. "Try moving again."
"Oh, so the people from Xuanzong are forcing me to admit it violently? Well, I have nothing to say then. Who told me I can't fight against you?"
This man actually tried to sow discord while appearing dignified. I was somewhat speechless at how pathetic they all seemed behind the scenes.
Mu Xuanche approached and took the knife from my hand.
"Women shouldn't play with knives," he said.
His words nearly made me laugh out loud. He wouldn't let me play with knives but was teaching me how to use guns instead.
Mu Xuanche moved closer to the man, speaking in a tone that only the three of us could hear.
"Is my woman someone you can mock?"
With that statement, the man's expression changed instantly as he lunged at Mu Xuanche, ready to strike.
He was the one I didn't need to worry about when dealing with Mu Xuanche; it was definitely him who would end up in trouble.
Sure enough, before his hands even touched Mu Xuanche, he had already fallen to the ground.
It was Chen Jiang who helped him up. This Old Fox truly spared no one.
He demanded that Mu Xuanche hand over the evidence so he could prove Mu Xuanche's innocence.
This old man was really amusing; how could he be the one to prove Mu Xuanche's innocence?
He placed a gourd in front of everyone, and Chen Jiang took it, asking what it was.
"Evidence," Mu Xuanche calmly uttered two words. His demeanor was far beyond what this group of losers could compare to. Even though he now wore a more ordinary face, his aura alone could overshadow them all.
Chen Jiang was somewhat confused by Mu Xuanche's meaning and opened his mouth to ask again.
But Mu Xuanche shot him a glare and pulled the cork from the gourd.
A wisp of blue smoke slowly emerged. Everyone present was a cultivator, so they knew exactly what this was.
The blue smoke gradually coalesced into a human form—it was the deceased Taoist Priestess.
Having the person involved come forward to speak was the best evidence; after all, who could talk after death?
I was just curious about how Mu Xuanche managed to bring this soul forth. Logically, the person who committed the murder wouldn't be foolish; they should know the principle of preventing a corpse from speaking.
Under the guidance of the Taoist Priestess, that person finally fell silent, allowing the Old Taoist Priestess to scold him without resistance.
After being stopped, the Old Taoist Priestess slowly walked towards Mu Xuanche.
"Can you tell me how you knew? Also, what method did you use to restore the soul? I remember I shattered it," he said, confusion written all over his face. It seemed he truly did not understand the reason.
However, Mu Xuanche was never known for being kind-hearted. He smiled at the man and whispered, "Do you want to know?"
Wow, that was harsh. The man's face turned pale with anger as he pointed at Mu Xuanche, unable to articulate his words.
Not satisfied yet, Mu Xuanche reached out and peeled off a layer of skin from the man's face, tossing it to the ground in mockery. "Next time, don't embarrass yourself with such cheap tricks; it really lowers your master's standards."
When everyone saw the swastika tattoo on his neck, they realized that members of the Cult of Spirits had infiltrated them.
The crowd wasted no time and lunged at him to attack.
Unexpectedly, it was too late; the man spat out black blood and collapsed to the ground. It seemed he had committed suicide by poison.
With his death, everyone lost their motivation to fight.
Chen Jiang ordered that the body be buried to avoid further trouble.
Just after they had set out, they had already lost two people.
The morale of the entire team plummeted. To prevent any more members of the Cult of Spirits from lurking among them, Chen Jiang decided to conduct another thorough check.
I, along with Mu Xuanche, was naturally the first to be excluded from suspicion, as we had just dealt with the Spirit Cult's infiltrators.
The few who had come with that person were tortured mercilessly by Chen Jiang, nearly stripped of their clothes.
Having come this far, if they suggested leaving, they would likely be treated as accomplices of the Cult of Spirits. Thus, they could only endure and accept the inspection.
However, the biggest issue with these people was that although it was Chen Jiang who had attacked them, they directed their resentful glares at me and Mu Xuanche, as if we were responsible for their plight. It was truly foolish.
I ignored them and felt a strong gaze fixed on me from behind.
My heart tightened, and I immediately turned around to look.
