I feel like my life has turned upside down, sleeping during the day and waking up at night.
It's midnight now, and I'm wide awake because I just got up from sleep.
I really can't fall back asleep, so I decide to get out of bed and take a look around.
As soon as I move, a hand from another person on the bed grabs me.
I turn to see him, and he looks at me with a questioning gaze, asking where I'm going.
Seeing such a handsome man sleeping peacefully, I can't help but smile lightly, pulling at the corners of my mouth as I softly say, "I can't sleep. I want to go check on Master’s room, just in case there are any clues."
As soon as I finish speaking, he turns over and sits up.
"I'll go with you," he says.
Watching his movements, I chuckle softly. "Mu Xuanche, do you think I'm a child? This is Xuanzong; it's just like my home."
I tease him for being overly cautious; it's really unnecessary for someone to accompany me for just a short distance.
Yet, despite having been fast asleep moments ago, he is already standing by the bed, fully dressed.
After putting on his clothes, he glances back at me. His stunningly handsome face is complemented by dark eyes that shimmer like obsidian with flecks of starlight—truly mesmerizing. He slightly parts his lips and speaks to me in a magnetic voice,
"Be careful; the road is slippery."
My mood was exceptionally good, warmth spreading through my heart, and a slight smile gracing my lips.
If I could spend my life like this, supporting each other without too much conflict, it would be a happiness that no amount of money could buy.
Like a gentle wife, I simply gazed at him in silence.
He tidied himself up and extended his hand toward me.
"Wife, please," he said.
I smiled again; my smiles had hardly ceased since being by his side.
Perhaps this was what I had been pursuing all my life. Once these matters were settled, I would care for nothing else but to live peacefully in Chang'an.
Taking his hand, I felt the few degrees cooler warmth of his palm. Ever since his revival, I had been able to sense his temperature and feel his heartbeat. That sudden awareness enveloped me, filling me with a profound sense of satisfaction; it felt so real.
"What are you thinking about?"
I felt a gentle tap on my head and turned to look at him.
He asked again, "What are you thinking about?"
"I was thinking how handsome you are," I replied.
The two exchanged a smile and did not continue the conversation.
As we approached the vicinity of the master's room, I caught a glimpse of a faint shadow moving inside.
The master had been missing for so long; who would be in his room at this hour?
I initially wanted to rush in, but Mu Xuanche stopped me.
He led me around to the back, where we crouched beneath the window on the rear wall to peek inside.
In the past, Mingyue and I had mocked the master for using a gauze window, thinking it served no real purpose. But now, I was extremely grateful to him; because of that gauze window, I only needed to make a small cut with a knife to see what was happening inside.
The figure in the room appeared to be a person. The master's room was protected by a barrier, and the entire space was arranged according to a grand feng shui layout, making it impossible for ordinary spirits to approach.
The figure was tall and robust, wearing the Robe of a Disciple of Xuanzong.
Who could this person be? Was he an infiltrator hiding within Xuanzong or someone sent from outside pretending to be one?
He kept knocking and rummaging around in the master's room as if searching for something.
As he prepared to turn around, I held my breath; I wanted to see who this was.
When I finally saw his face, I was genuinely taken aback.
How could it be him?
It was the same person who reported to me this afternoon, leading the Senior Brothers. I remember his name—Li Yun, right?
What is he doing in Master’s room? What does he want?
After searching every corner of Master’s room, it seemed that Li Yun didn’t find what he was looking for, and he quietly left.
As soon as he was gone, Mu Xuanche and I entered.
Master has always been a minimalist, so his room looked particularly simple with not much in it.
The entire room felt empty. I glanced around the places Li Yun had just searched but found nothing suspicious.
I couldn’t figure out what Li Yun was up to. Tired from searching, I sat down.
Mu Xuanche stood behind me the whole time. He wasn’t part of the sect and didn’t want to interfere; I understood that.
“Mu Xuanche, does your Li Yun seek wealth or what?”
“The Treasure Pavilion of the sect isn’t here.”
With that one sentence, I realized Li Yun wasn’t after wealth; the most valuable items of the sect were kept in the Treasure Pavilion.
Because they were all cultivators, it seemed rather unimportant.
Even though Master Ming was someone who loved money, there were hardly any decent items in his room; he considered them a burden.
If it weren't for the pursuit of wealth, then there were things in Master Ming's room that Li Yun wanted, which was why he took the opportunity to sneak in while Master was away.
How could I find out Li Yun's intentions? After thinking for a while, I ultimately decided to seek out someone who might know.
I brought Mu Xuanche to the cave on the back mountain. It was here that I had learned to draw talismans with Mingyue under the guidance of our senior brother. Those days were long gone.
Our senior brother had gone missing, and Mingyue had also left.
Touching the dried ink marks on the desk, a chill ran through my fingertips.
I withdrew my hand and my heart, making my way toward the cave.
I still had more important matters to attend to. The cave remained eerie, with a growing sense of malice.
The first time I entered, I was terrified by a male and female ghost in the cave; now, however, I felt no fear at all.
As I walked halfway in, the Male Ghost lunged at me, attempting to grab my neck. Unexpectedly, Mu Xuanche behind me seized him and held him firmly in place.
He shouted angrily, "Who are you? Who allowed you Upper Xuan Sect to cause trouble here?"
I let Mu Xuanche go, knowing he couldn't harm me, so there was nothing to worry about.
"Do you remember me? It's been a while. I didn't expect you to still be the same," I said.
After staring at me for a moment, he finally snapped back to reality and spoke, "You're Lingyunzi's disciple, Gu Si."
I smiled lightly. "I didn't think you'd remember. Not bad, your memory is quite good."
After seeing me, his tense demeanor relaxed a bit. "Why are you back? Don't you know the rules of the Xuan Sect? Bringing a stranger into the forbidden area of the Upper Xuan Sect—just because Lingyunzi isn't around doesn't mean you can act recklessly."
"He is my husband. I'm bringing my husband back to the sect; how could my master blame me?"
He immediately retorted, "Nonsense! You're not in a Ghost Marriage; this is clearly a living person."
I looked at him and smiled slightly. His eyes were filled with confusion, unable to comprehend my confidence and why I remained so composed.
He stared at Mu Xuanche for a long time before finally exclaiming in surprise, "You actually revived!"
"Whether my husband revived or not is not what we should discuss. I wanted to ask you about matters concerning the Xuan Sect," I replied.
I could sense that after I finished speaking, he became entirely on guard.
He asked me, "What do you want to know?"
"Do you know about my master and senior brother's disappearance?"
He nodded.
I asked him, hoping for a stroke of luck, "Do you know where they are?"
He pointed at Mu Xuanche beside me. "If he doesn't know, how could I possibly know?"
He probably didn't know, so I didn't press further. Instead, I recounted what I had seen in my master's room and asked if he had any idea what it meant.
He let out a cold laugh and turned to leave, indicating that he wasn't going to answer me.
But seeing his smile, I guessed he must know something.
Mu Xuanche gestured to me, suggesting whether I should go forward and grab him to ask.
This person was inherently proud, not someone who could be easily dealt with, so I stopped Mu Xuanche from taking action.
I called out to his retreating figure, "Don't you want to know about Zhang Xiaoqian?"
Sure enough, he paused in his tracks.
When I had tested him regarding Zhang Xiaoqian, I could tell that the two of them likely had feelings for each other.
They were just tormenting each other, neither willing to back down and reveal their true thoughts.
A single word from me could leave him stunned. I didn't believe for a second that he disliked me.
He turned around, his eyes fixed on me with a fierce intensity. At first, he hesitated to act because of Mu Xuanche beside me, so his gaze, though harsh, was more of a warning.
But now, his eyes looked as if he wanted to kill me.
"What do you want?"
I smiled lightly, feeling the temperature around Mu Xuanche drop significantly. His threat had provoked Mu Xuanche, who was beginning to show signs of anger.
I held Mu Xuanche's hand to calm him and said to the Male Ghost in front of us, "Let's make a trade."
